From Larry Jones of Richmond, one of the original Apathy House (he named it this) Flames. His wife of long-standing, Barbara, passed away as I was traveling to ren-devious with T Hocking for our trip to Tom's Thumb. He has been busy taking care of business, but found time for a fun time in the Sierra Nevada.

I headed to Merced to meet up with Brian (his younger brother and wife) and Judith and we headed out for some backpacking. Looking forward to the Banner/Ritter area, but smoke from Aspen fire put a kibosh on that...so we went up into the Carson-Iceberg area and back into Long Lake. Next morning we had smoke so we hiked out. Went up on Sonora Pass and that night west wind shoved the smoke to Nevada. We hiked south on PCT until we got to a ridge that looks south across Yosemite and down into Banner/Ritter area (pic attached). We had a good time even if it wasn't what we planned.

This was back in early summer.

As I proceeded on my way back to Merced from Greeley Hill, map-less and trusting to instinct about my knowledge of the Mariposa hinterland; I left the Rev's place and took the long way home, via unknown roads, bulwarked by a good breakfast and plentiful gasoline and water and good old PLUCK. I felt cocky, yeah. It proved to be a worthwhile venture.

I encountered two weary-looking bicyclists going up this real hard-core uphill and offered them good luck and told them that they had a lot of guts. One shouted out, "That or we're just fecking stupid."

I found a beautiful little spring about half the way up that grade. I waited and waited for the cyclists. No show. On to Mariposa.

And the camera's battery was TOTALLY out of juice.

Just as I am.

Sweet dreams...

Don't look for me at the Oakdale Festival.

Won't be there.

Wayno, gonna miss seeing you--give me a call when you get into the vicinity.

OLD CALI vs HELLAFORNIA

In the forest you may hear the mouse,

But first get away from your own rank house.

Nature sings to us

One set of ears at a time,

But it’s an age-old rhyme

And an even-older melody.

Coyote sings.

Kokopelli plays.

We all can dance.

While some do,

Others don’t--

Instead they’ll chant some chants.

We live together with the fantasies

And we fall apart

Only when they are forgotten,

With casual-seeming ease,

Which is done constantly nowadays.

Used to be Okie-lifornia.

Times change.

I've found him. Our friend Warren the naturalist is living over near the Rev in the Greeley Hill-Pine Mountain duburban sprawl and Jeff's doing some work for him this week--as a matter of fact, he was heading over there yesterday after I had breakfast with Denny and he...

His full name is Warren White and he has a list of achievement which sounds very impressive on Linkedwhatever, the online privacy-invader, career-enhancer website.

Warren, who bolted that pet rock for the amusement of tourons, is another heavy like the Warren-who-bolts-walls, though not nearly so famous.

I found this shot of him there.

I'm not certain where he lives, but he and Jeff are well-acquainted since they go back so damn far, to 1971.

Mouse drove a far piece. He did indeed.

He drove thru the town of Turlock tonight at roulette hour.

Don't.

Oakdale is best approached from the south on 99 to Monte Vista and take the right. Connect to Geer Road down past the university, and turn left, and don't stop till you are in Oakdale.

Before you get to the center of town, find C Street, turn left. Then turn right after two short blocks.

You are now, or should be, at the Bianchi Community Center.

Have fun.

Tonight was a blast.

I'm going again in the morning to the doings.

My contibution to the Black and White.Bogus moon...the real Selene, and only half of her, just now rose around two. :)

The festival's real, though.

I hope some of you undecideds can afford ten bucks for the single day.

It would be worth it.

I wouldn't steer you wrong.

There is a vile odor of cowshid m-a-nating from manure farms just before you get into Oakdale. Take a clothespin.

The cheapest gas on 99 was in Turlock--$3.49/gal.

T Hocking

I had to stop and shoot this on J-19 north of Turlock.

There was some cutie named Hannah working there, would you believe?

Of coursen't.

In answer, RR has a form of Parkinson's, according to scuttlebutt. He's aware of the love. It was hard to watch the contrast between him today and him on the West Face of Sentinel when he was very much in his prime.

Looking forward, got plans to travel Hannah-wards any time soon? Please stop in on the way, if you can make the time. I want to introduce you to my pet rock.

A physics problem from the Bird from a summit conference/safety meeting this weekend at Oakdale.

A national socialist, a communist, and a socialist are thrown off of a rooftop at the same time. Which hits the ground first?

They all hit at the same time because they are all the same thing.

And then the conversation turned to realpolitik and his private room at the YV jail.

He said he can't go to Canada any longer, partly because of that joke.

At a Mexican restaurant for lunch, I came up with this version.

The three are a liar, an adulterer, and a politician.

Jim was a good mentor when I first showed up.

I reminded him of the cryptic advice he gave me one time: "Left side of Reed's." He explained it that if one wanted to tick a 5.10, this was a good start. Right side in on the left side, he said, is the key to success there.

I still had to figure that out for myself, but I did.

He always bucked us up. And so did Kim Schmitz.

I would like to say that Jim may have problems but he's helped me solve some of mine.

So thanks, Bird. It was great to have spent some time with you and your stories on Saturday.

On this successful ascent, our heroes drove their vehicle up the incline to shorten the approach and it go stuck in the sand. They needed to take signage down and place the board under the tires to help get traction. Some rain helped pack the sand, fortunately.

The climb itself took about four hours. The involvement with getting their ride salvaged took over five hours. And they had to lie down on the summit to keep from being observed by tribal policemen. Plus they climbed the route on the side of the tower opposite from the lookout view.

Berg heil!

Hey there sleigh!

This is from WZZM in Muskegon, MI, where Santa really wants to open a seasonal branch production unit with neebee in charge, but SHE'S TOO BUSY WITH CRITTERS AND GIFTS ALL YEAR LONG AS IT IS!

Sorry, Santa Claus! You piker!

The Twelve Days After Christmas
(Frederick Silver)
(Not sung to the same tune as the other song!)

The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight.
And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite.
Then, with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge,
That my true love, my true love gave to me.

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup;
I had to use the three French hens to make some chicken soup.
The four calling birds were a big mistake,
For their language was obscene.
The five gold rings were completely fake
And they turned my fingers green.

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay:
I gave the whole darn gaggle to the ASPCA.

On the seventh day what a mess I found:
All seven of the swimming swans had drowned,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect,
I bundled up the . . .
Eight maids a-milking,
Nine pipers piping,
Ten ladies dancing,
'Leven lords a-leaping,
Twelve drummers drumming
(spoken) Well, actually I kept one of the drummers(girls)
Well, actually I kept one of the maids a-milking(boys)

And sent them back collect.
I wrote my true love, "We are through, love"
And I said in so many words,
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the birds!"
(echo of "four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves
and a partridge in a pear tree.)
