Congrats to you Chris for sticking it out. Most guys would have deleted this thread and ran away with their tails between their legs. Including some of your detractors.

These guys would talk #shit# with or without your presence here and this thread has been amazing for the ideas on getting yourself out of this situation and self rescue in general.

I'm predicting that Chris is going to top out. If not with Pete, then with someone else he meets there. The idea is to go UP not down.

As it turns out, many very well-known climbers had their humble beginnings being rescued when newbies or non-climbers. Doug Robinson, Chris Vandiver, Vern Clevenger, to name a few. I imagine it speaks to their unfettered enthusiasm.

Hi Chris G, I didn't treat you the way I would like to be treated or how I imagine you would like yourself to be treated, and for that I apologize. It's mostly uncharacteristic of me to make fun of folks I don't know, but for some reason this was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the Russel Crow story.

I teach my kids that a joke isn't funny if it makes someone feel bad. You seem to be taking the hazing like a champ, but I shouldn't presume that since I don't know you yet.

So, sorry dude.

My own introduction to supertopo was sharing a story about my stupidity on an impromptu free solo attempt in a heavy mist / light rain on Royal Arches only because I couldn't find a partner. We're all human, and wisdom is what we (hopefully) get from experience when we screw something up.

Chris

Rohrer will be at campsite #2, Upper Pines from the 10th to the 17th.
As for the Marine manual looking it up: waste of time, you will learn more from the guys that decide which one comes first or more important: climbing or women. That’s a ?

This way you will learn how to “tie the knot” or that’s knot good, wrong knot, plus the route and a couple of other tricks you would not find in the manual. Plus the manual does not say anything about beer.

No worries. It doesn't bother me. If I had run away and not responded I would have never had the opportunity to go climb with Pete. So sticking around has been worth it for sure.

I didn't mentioned looking up the military stuff to actually learn but more to check it out for curiosities sake.
I will stop by and see if Rohrer is there if I can. Do you guys personally know him? Since some of you know when he will be in the valley.

A few legal questions if anyone knows:

A senior female officer who talked to me when I got down directed another officer to write the citation. The officer that wrote my citation was nice enough to mention that if I called up the CVB I could get the court date moved to San Diego. It seems my citation isn't even processed yet but they told me if it is moved I waive my right to plead not guilty. If I can't even plead my case can't they just send me a fine instead of having me show up? Seems to be a waste for me as well as the courts then. But also, what does the judge make the decision based on especially if they aren't based in Yosemite or involved in climbing/the outdoors? If I can't plead my case and the judge bases their decision solely off of a YOSAR report I am screwed.

If this is a misdemeanor charge

I'm going to suggest you see whatever judge IN PERSON. There could be benefits from seeing non yosemite judge or it could be worse.. hard to say unless you have experience with both judges.

Suggest plead Guilty. If helicopter fees are involved suggest not guilty.

Ask to make a comment before sentencing.

Thank YOSAR and and simply state you were not as prepared as you thought. Take all responsibility, and state you are glad to be alive today. Let them know you have learned a lot and that there is no way it will happen again.

You may have an opportunity to talk to the prosecutor before trial if so do it. ask what penalty he is looking for from judge. Suggest same line of conversation as above except taking responsibility unless he offers a low acceptable fine first.

If they are looking for massive fines ... get a delay or plead not guilty and get a lawyer.

If you are fined you can make payments at $50 a month or so (possibly less) generally.

What were you charged with, seems I read disorderly conduct? If you send me the code sections you are charged with I will gets some real advice for you. Sounds like a case a judge is not going consider a priority. Of course there may be judges up there that have a hard-on for risk takers. I have zero experience in the courts up there, maybe someone can chime in.

First thing is to get it reduced to an infraction. Second, I would not ask any court to just send me a fine, good way to get tooled. You will be way ahead of the game to show up, in a suit, contrite and apologetic. I suspect this could be handled with one appearance.

Oh, you also have to inform the court that you are currently in therapy with PTPP :)

I don't think helicopter fees will be involved but since the officer left the penalty up to the judge I guess anything is possible.

My citation reads "Disorderly Conduct. Creating a hazardous condition." The offense charged says "36 CFR 2.34 - 4." The dash may be another mark but I can't read it (looks like a small circle, not a zero) however the last 4 is definitely there.
I completely agree that it is best to show up. I just was surprised that they do it that way.

A fine only appears on a ticket for minor offenses like traffic and parking. Disorderly conduct covers a lot of ground so the is no standard bail schedule. I would not want to say to much on here. I will send you a private message

I believe in Chris, if for no other reason than he has the balls to stand up and take the sh|t kicking that has [deservedly] come his way. He's no quitter, and that - in my book - is what really counts.

Jon and I look forward to Chris' and Travis' help - and anyone else who would like to tag along and learn stuff - at the base of El Cap next week.

I am always in awe of Ammon with his light and fast approach. I wish I could move that quickly sometimes, but I really can't. I'm really tired at the end of the day. I don't do ANY climbing in between walls! So it seems like every time I arrive in Yosemite, I need to get warmed up and fit again. And just when that happens, it's time to go home!

However I have my Secret Weapon coming to help me this fall - my free climbing gun Jon from Jolly Roger. So with any luck, we'll be front and centre in Tom's photos by the end of next week.

If anyone else wants to come along and learn stuff, be sure to message me, eh?

Cheers and beers on the bridge next week,
PtPP

P.S. Isn't your fine for creating a dangerous situation allegedly because of the rockfall risk that you might knock stuff down on Nose climbers below? If that's the case, it should be easy to beat.

I think you should be fined for choosing the wrong partner, and maybe being a bit too inexperienced. But if there should be fined for that, then I should have been fined for it too a bunch of times. Not to mention another hundred guys right here on this forum!

Geez, you've taken your lumps, you've paid your "fine" here among your peers. Isn't that enough punishment? I hope so. Mind you, if the fine is just a few hundred bucks, then it might be worth it to pay, just to get it behind you once and for all.

Anyway, don't worry about it for now, come on back to the scene of the crime, and have another kick at the cat.

Cool. I just learned over Thanksgiving dinner that GooglyMoogly is my in-law's grandson.

Had a blast showing him all these posts, especially pre-rescue; a discussion of what could go wrong (it did), and the obligatory "You're gonna die" post.
