haaaaaaaalp...

i can't see in the photo if the "chain link" is a quick-link or a one-peice link. seems like the screw sleeve on a quick-link would interfere with the rope.

i want to mess around with this rig but i haven't been able to find single SS links ANYWHERE. checked with several hardware stores, online dealers, and climbing shops. i can find the round SS rings no problem but only quick-links for the "chain link".

any source on those? or would a quick-link work?

Wheezy. I haven't tried this mother but think you're right the quick link would probably interfere with the rope. What about going to the hard ware store and cutting a single link

kid c, i couldn't find any lift rated chain at either of the hardware stores in town. just some janky bulk chain for hanging lamps or whatever. the suppliers i've found online have a minimum 50' order for SS chain. if i find something i'll post it up.

Wally, you might be interested to know that Michel Piola has used a system very similar to your's for years. His is made from an old style aluminium caving bolt hanger, a maillon rapide and a short length of 8mm rope with a knot in the end.

Here it is (not actually in use) with a sky hook attached for bolting ground-up:

I experimented with a similar system myself, but using a much thinner cord and two small maillons. It was totally useless as it was very difficult to adjust - which of course is the object of it! You obviously came to the same conclusion about the rope diameter, but of course it has little bearing on safety, it just makes manipulation much easier.

Here's my (now abandoned) version partially hidden by the 10€ builder's hammer, attached to a BD Talon hook - which was the only good part of the system:

That does not look like it would be fun to try to release under load.
