Lober is also "Wilderness Respect" at Mountain Project. He posted the EXACT same thread there. The same pathetic tone is in all his posts.

What I noticed is that Katie and Alex talked about getting a diamond, but decided to buy gear!

"With this harness and these shoes, I thee..."

Traditionalist, preserving the dirt-bagging traditions.

I am glad they are both able to collect a paycheck. Maybe climbing will climb into the 360s.

Cool that Katie led.

A guy who maces cripples points the finger at Honold for doing an ad for Citibank.

What a dick!

Hey Lobo why don't you occupy your head using your rectum.

I own shares in Citibank and say good for them and good for Alex.

Alex is going to get a good paycheck for this plus residuals every time the ad plays. This is cash going into our climbing community to someone who deserves it most. Good for him.

I would agree that the OP is unenlightened. If someone came to you and asked you to work as a climber for a couple of grand plus a few more thousand in residuals would you ask, "Who is it for? Citibank...no, I do not want to help them. Keep your money. I am pure."

I was always delighted when my residual checks came from Universal Studios: found money. And dismayed when they stopped. All for want of a SAG card. So shortshighted of me. I wish only the best for Alex and Katie.

I want to know what made Alex laugh. That will get him an invite back.

I had no idea who the 'actors' were in that commercial, but I did mention to my wife that CitiBank managed to get it right representing climbing in a TV ad. No wonder CB got it 'right'!

At the other end of the getting it right/wrong perspective, a recent cruise line commercial features some yahoo grinning as he does a swinging traverse on the climbing wall...that one makes me chuckle every time I see it.

The CB ad is awesome for the way it represents climbing technique, and for getting some world-class talent involved. Selling out? As others have mentioned, it looks like an honest day's work, and there's no shame in that.

Good for you Alex!!!

He deserves it. One of the truly great and humble climbers, making some cash doing what he loves!

Some climbers are sponsored by Patagucci a Billion dollar corporation, are they sell-outs too? We sell out every time we go to work!

If you look at a network map of which financial corporations own what percentage of the worlds economy, you will see that in some ways we all have "sold out" to Citibank. http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21228354.500-revealed--the-capitalist-network-that-runs-the-world.html

A different take...My full time job and life mission is to work on improving Youth Wellness. So amidst the overwhelming plethora of consumer messaging that kids are exposed to, I really appreciate this ad for the message of functional equipment, purchased to support adventurous female empowerment... in a setting of stunning natural beauty.

Its not really selling out, right?

Yes, he just when they said jump....

But really, I see it as "Will you do this for us, which we will pay you for?

Not to mention how righteous the commercial was for women being the leaders in relationships.

No, he gets to live his life by his rules a little bit longer because of the giant economy destroying mege-corporation.

QITNL, One correction: it's not a speaking part for Katie. The voice over isn't heard. Her voice is probably not considered industry standard.

And one question/revelation for those of you complaining: Back in September Chris Sharma accepted about 3,000 euros a day from Rupert Murdoch's oldest son as a guiding fee for a trip in Majorca. How do you feel about that?

My take is this: if you're in an influential position and you use your influence to promote positive activities, then the right thing to do is to try to accept any offers where its possible. When Chris took the money for guiding, he had the opportunity to influence one of the most controversial families in the world. Right on! I'm guessing, granted on a more superficial level, Alex and Katie felt that being in the commercial was a way to promote an activity they believe in. And, if they don't do it, someone else does. So why not take the pay check and increase the depth of your influence?

If these two had passed up the chance to take some of Citibank's money, they would have been criticized for that too. Probably by the same guys who are bagging on them right now.

Philo,

I generally agree with your position on things, but I have to say, and with all due respect.. there are a number of threads up now that have gotten so nasty with personal conflict that you are usually an energetic half of. I suspect I am not alone as someone who might post thoughtful comments but are really turned off by the personal attacks between you and skipt, chaz, and others and just stay away...Why not stay on topic, and battle it out with thoughtful posts, and keep the personal attacks off the threads. As with all conflicts, de-escalation begins at home...
