Rattlers are people, too. You just have to know how to make nice with them....

Countless days in JTree and really only encountered a handful of rattlers. Its just not worth the heartburn even if you are deathly afraid of them. Mostly because they see a lot of activity and hence rattle from a good distance away.
The Needles? Now that's a different story altogether. For some reason I got lucky and encountered a snake on almost every trip out there with the exception of the colder months of fall. There must be something about those rocks that they love. And I assume that since they don't see a lot of traffic, they wait until you are on top of them before they rattle.

I've never seen a rattlesnake in Joshua Tree. Not one.
I've seen quite a few tortises, a bunch of bighorn sheep, and two mountain lions, but no rattlesnakes.
I heard from a medic at Fort Irwin, every soldier he ever treated for snake bite was bit in the hand. What's that tell you?

Half the rattlesnake strikes do not inject venom. The smart snakes save the venom for something they can eat.

In thirty-seven years of going to Jtree, I've only seen one buzzworm. I've heard plenty of them though.
