Last night John Williams hiked out of the backcountry. Thank you to all of the people who called with information, searched the areas, or help out in any other way.

Great news!!! We would love to hear the story since it must be a good one to have such an experienced hiker "late."

Lately I'm more aware of the dangers SaR faces, having only been put in that position because thier victims do outrageous, dumb or irresponsible things. Look at all the waste of time and potential risk of life in this case, for not better communicating his plans/ whereabouts etc.

When are we gonna get the dirt? Someone should check his credit card history.
I think he was on a bender in Bridgeport.

Hi everyone.
I'm John, the once missing hiker. I want to thank everyone for their concern and especially the people who put in their time and effort searching for me or doing what they could to increase the chances that I'd be found.
I just googled my name and the word "hiker" out of curiosity about what I'd find on the web. This site appeared at the top. I read the thread and signed up, so that I could respond.
I understand people would like a trip report, and I'm happy to provide one. Right now, though, it's after midnight and I need to get some sleep.
I'll have to return with that report--tomorrow, if I can.
Just a few minor corrections for now: I wasn't having any physical or health problems. I was and am fit. I had plantar fasciitis for about a year as a result of running too aggressively up to Paiute Pass and back down, but that, thankfully, is now history. (I missed backpacking last year because of this injury.)
Because of an unexpected car problem, I started my trip a day late and thus expected to complete the trip on Sept. 25, with an emergency date of noon, Sept. 27. I walked out at North Lake on the evening of Oct. 1, 4 days after my emergency date and, as it happens, 2 days before a big storm hit the Sierra Nevada.
I was never in any trouble, but the outside world had no way of knowing that I had simply underestimated the difficulty of the terrain and how long it would take me to cover it. The terrain was challenging and incredibly beautiful. I had a great trip, except for running low on food and knowing that I was past my emergency date.
More later.
