You can call the SAR investigations office of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park at 559-565-3762. Thank you for your help.

John lives across the street from us. A nice guy who has backpacked a lot and has experience in the backcountry. Here's hoping for a good outcome.

John is inclined to wear a big white hat and glacier glasses (even around town) and he'll probably have the same on when he's found.
He wrote a book (yet to be published) about his experience on a long walk through the Sierra. It was good reading. John knows what he's doing out there.

John's had some health problems that had kept him out out of the backcountry for quite a few years. Mostly legs and back if I can remember. Hope they haven't flared up with all the walking. Godspeed John. Weird not seeing his light on across the street and looking up above the roof in the same direction knowing he's out there somewhere.

That actually gives me hope that he is just holed up somewhere resting his back. I have a messed up back and know that it can really sideline a person.
I hope they find him soon. Anyone know what resources are being used to find him? Is an active search happening? There is bad weather heading our way Tuesday.

Lately I'm more aware of the dangers SaR faces, having only been put in that position because thier victims do outrageous, dumb or irresponsible things. Look at all the waste of time and potential risk of life in this case, for not better communicating his plans/ whereabouts etc.

Hi everyone.
I'm John, the once missing hiker. I want to thank everyone for their concern and especially the people who put in their time and effort searching for me or doing what they could to increase the chances that I'd be found.
I just googled my name and the word "hiker" out of curiosity about what I'd find on the web. This site appeared at the top. I read the thread and signed up, so that I could respond.
I understand people would like a trip report, and I'm happy to provide one. Right now, though, it's after midnight and I need to get some sleep.
I'll have to return with that report--tomorrow, if I can.
Just a few minor corrections for now: I wasn't having any physical or health problems. I was and am fit. I had plantar fasciitis for about a year as a result of running too aggressively up to Paiute Pass and back down, but that, thankfully, is now history. (I missed backpacking last year because of this injury.)
Because of an unexpected car problem, I started my trip a day late and thus expected to complete the trip on Sept. 25, with an emergency date of noon, Sept. 27. I walked out at North Lake on the evening of Oct. 1, 4 days after my emergency date and, as it happens, 2 days before a big storm hit the Sierra Nevada.
I was never in any trouble, but the outside world had no way of knowing that I had simply underestimated the difficulty of the terrain and how long it would take me to cover it. The terrain was challenging and incredibly beautiful. I had a great trip, except for running low on food and knowing that I was past my emergency date.
More later.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't (set an emergency date/time). I always leave an itinerary and an emergency date with a friend. As a result, I often end up busting my ass at the end to get back in time. This time I failed.
I once camped on the shoulder of Split Mountain and didn't do the class-2 walk up to the summit, because I HAD to get back the next day.
I like backpacking solo, and I like going with a friend. For me backpacking is partly a meditation on the mountains. Being with someone can be a distraction. When traveling solo, I enjoy the necessity of being careful. It keeps me focused.
I picnicked in our city park today with some friends and shared my story about the trip, but I haven't written it up yet.
I could have taken some great pictures, if I'd had a camera. But I tend to leave the camera behind for the same reason I go solo. It, too, can interfere with being there.

As both John Muir and Norman Clyde - to take but two examples - were very fond of solo adventures in the Sierra, that speaks for itself.

I was really relieved at the happy news of your safe return. When I read the posted itinerary, I said to myself “I’d be late too; who would want to hurry.” I can hardly wait to hear the story, particularly Simpson to Blue Canyon to Martha.
I nearly got stuck once in a Halloween storm in LeConte Canyon in 1978 when we considered aborting down river all the way (a foolish option, but seemed comforting since I grew up there). Instead, the weather cleared and we made it back over Bishop Pass (barely).
