Funny you should post this. A friend of mind infected me with this little gem this weekend. Maybe the worst music video and song I have ever watched to the end. It is not a case of being "so bad it is good," rather it is just a strangely compelling musical train-wreck that cannot be ignored. Enjoy.

Survival, glad I missed that one. I have to admit that it makes me feel like the old fart that I am when someone says "anything by the Beatles".
But, my 28 yr old daughter says that whenever anyone of my generation hears a Beatles song being played "they get all starry eyed and drift off to some better time", she's probably right.

Ebony and Ivory.
Or most everything by Paul McCartney, post Beatles.
EDIT: Haha! I see someone already nominated the Beatles. Yeah, grossly cliched, but after carefully avoiding listening to a single Beatles song for 40 years they are beginning to kinda sound okay again, at least in small doses. They had some creative tension between the band members.
McCartney by himself is so, so, so stunningly pleasant. Gack.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens.
While in college I worked a summer job at an aerospace company. One of my co-workers had a radio tuned to a station that played that song on a regular basis. Because I was just the summer help and he was a senior engineer, I could never get him to change the station. More than twenty years later, just the thought of that song makes me shudder.

KFOG-FM has a "10 at 10" block of 10 songs they play at 10am weekdays, usually all from a single year in the past. When it's Friday the 13th, the theme is "Hits from Hell". Stuff that was once popular, but we wish now that we had not bought it.... Standard examples are mentioned upthread:
Knock Three Times
Afternoon Delight
Here's a playlist from 2006:
"I Think I Love You" - The Partridge Family
"Knock Three Times" - Dawn
"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" - William Shatner
"The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace
"Seasons In The Sun" - Terry Jacks
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero" - Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods
"You Light Up My Life" - Debby Boone
"Afternoon Delight" - Starlight Vocal Band
"Puttin' On The Ritz" - Taco
"Copacabana (At The Copa)" - Barry Manilow
http://sitting-here-reminiscing.blogspot.com/2006/10/kfogs-10-10-hits-from-hell-no-more.html
Now unpopular artists like Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond are included. ABBA used to make the list, but they "became cool" after the Muriel's Wedding movie, so they are no longer listed. Other disco stuff will often make it.
Here are some others:
Muskrat Love
Chevy Van
We Are The World
Timothy
They also have a related theme, "guilty pleasures". Songs that really rock, but we are embarrassed to hear in front of our friends. Billy Jean would be a good example.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the all-time worst song to have in your head is "It's a Small World," although I see many other excellent candidates listed. From my own era, I thought "Ninety-Six Tears" by Question Mark & The Mysterians was almost vacuous, despite the great name of the band. I could add lots of mid-1970's music, but I don't know the names any more, because that music sent me off of pop and back to full-time classical.

Most modern country is not country at all. it is Pop music with a fake twang.
I watched that old Willie movie honeysuckel rose w my stepdaughter a few years ago and she asked me what kind of music it was. I told her country and she was like. Wow, How come it is not all whiny? this is really good.
I am convinced That anyone can make a hit if it is prmoted enough. take the worst song in the world. Buy a crapload of air time and if the public hears it enough times they will decide that they like it and it will get stuck in their brains and become a hit.

What exactly do we mean by Worst songs ever?
There are some songs that you hear for 5 seconds and you have that adrenalized TURN IT OFF NOW feeling... and some songs that give you this horrible twisted feeling where you keep listening and get more ashamed the longer you listen. And maybe it sticks in your head and you're afraid to tell anyone. Most songs from Air Supply fit that category for me:
Air Supply - The One That You Love:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY31ZH6hAFI
Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lE6Htee0sA

If you aren't Canadian you might not know much about this titan of trailer-trash rock but his numerous terrible tunes get frequent airplay on local radio while i'm working all day.
Kim Mitchell gets my vote all day every day, just pick a song, they all suck so horrendously i puke in my mouth when they come on (with the exception of Lager and ale).

On a side note, I once worked with a fellow named Pat who hated Kim Mitchell more than I do, he would curse vehemently whenever it came on so I coined him a nickname, Patty O'Lanterns

My worst ever vote: Katy Perry's Hot n Cold makes me want to scratch out my eardrums.

Likewise El Paso (excellent Grady Martin guitar work, Marty Robbins has a great voice and the story inspired donini to take up climbing).

Barbarian, I overlooked "Sylvia's Mother," which certainly deserves its place in the Hall of Shame, three years ago, but, to me, Dr. Hook atoned (so to speak) for it with "Cover of the Rolling Stone."
Most ST posters are lucky they haven't ventured into evangelical worship services in the 1980's and, sad to say, sometimes beyond, where almost any Sunday, you would be regaled with self-centered lyrics set to vapid melodies.

One of the real blessings and curses of life is to have a memory that instantly records and catalogs music and lyrics. I have literally thousands of songs permantly etched in my brain and ready for instant playback.
One the flip side, I was unfortunate enough to hear the ending theme song to the Donnie and Marie variety show, just once, over 35 years ago. The result:
May tomorrow be a perfect day
May you find love and laughter along the way
May God keep You in His tender care
Til we all meet together again
Good night everybody
There it is stuck forever. I thought I had it caged and hidden under a rock, but no....Karen had to come along and lift the rock off. Why oh why did you have to do that?!?

Surely somebody has mentioned this already (but I'm too lazy to check), Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.

Some may enjoy 17+ minutes of Donna Summer faking orgasm, but this rates right up there on this list for me...and the soundtrack just sounds like bad porn:

Haha, MisterE. You are leading the way. I like Led Zeppelin, but sometimes Plant sounds like he's getting off in some of their live music. Wish he would just shut up sometimes with his moans and yeahs. Yeah, yeaaaaah, yeahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaeh.

I'm really surprised by some of the nominations. Led Zeppelin? Lynard Skynard? The Beatles?! Those are really more your personal foibles than suggestions for worst songs. Just admit you you don't like them, not that they're bad, because they are not.
Back on topic, surprised that no one has thrown out "Betty Davis Eyes". Absolutely God freakin' horrible. Even makes some of the current rap/hip hop songs look strong.

PRAYING MANTIS LOVE AFFAIR
by Leroy Mack
1. I want a love that's lasting and not for just a day,
The kind of love the two of us can share.
Though it might not last forever, let's try to make it there,
'Cause I don't want a praying mantis love affair.
CHORUS: The female mantis eats her mate when they're through makin' love.
There's nothing left but fingernails and hair.
I want an all consuming love, but let's draw the line somewhere,
'Cause I don't want a praying mantis love affair.
2. I saw it on a nature show last night on my TV,
'Cause I couldn't find the hockey game nowhere.*
When I saw that lady mantis chewing on her boyfriend's leg,
It looked like an old girlfriend over there.*
CHORUS
TAG: Yes, I don't want a praying mantis love affair.

kiddin' me? That's one of the elements that make zeppelin the zeppelin...
every legendary rock star has that one thing in common: completely letting their inhibitions go
Why the heck would anyone be talking about LZ in this thread?

Sheryl Crow- if she just would just stop singing and playing the guitar, she would be great.

In spite of their popularity.
A contemporary listen to what's "popular" would indicate that quality, talent, and popularity do not by any means go hand in hand.

Sheryl Crow is bad, thanks for reminding me. Another female wannabe rocker that tries too hard, and just doesn't make it happen.
The one or two octaves in which lies her "comfort" vocal range is by itself almost unbearable. When she strains to go higher than that range, it starts straying into a maddening territory usually reserved for the likes of Yoko Ono.
If that weren't bad enough, her songs seem to have been written by a couple of 13 year olds. All I wanna do, is have some fun. I got a feeling, I'm not the only one.
Oh, geez.

This gem got stuck in my head a few years ago. Involuntary humming on a regular basis. Happened a lot on approach hikes. Annoyed the hell out of a few partners.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

That was some pretty awful stuff from Yoko, but I'm not sure it counts as a song.
In general, I like just about anything, when it comes to songs (some of Ricardo Arjona's work may be the one exception). Even Rebecca Black's Friday got a pretty cool treatment from "Epic Mullet Guy":

Whoa whoa Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.
I refuse to You Tube it for fear I might gag and choke and die and there's no one around at the moment for CPR. Well maybe. I'm at Discretion Brewery. Bad form to choke and gag in a micro brewery.

Those of you who don't spend time in "contemporary Christian worship" don't know how bad songs can be, particularly those that came out in that genre from the 1970's and 80's. They give meaning to "God-awful."
