I second "The Great Gig in the Sky"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUVt6MqrWgk&feature=player_detailpage

And in my view - the best present prog rock band and excellent by any standard - Crippled Black Phoenix and "Of A Lifetime" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE8p_5EDjg0&feature=player_detailpage

It is pointless to discuss "best band" or "best guitarist" but ,
as a lifelong guitar player I would have to say, David Gilmore
is my all time favorite , dood can make it sing.

I always sort of found the word Prog to be an ugly word and considering what was and had occured in music with the fusion of blues, jazz, classical and rock that it is a short sighted kind of dumb analysis.

I must confess I don't like any of those other "progressive" bands. I actually hate Rush(yes I am one of them). I have since I can remember- think it has to do with hearing on the radio in Canada when I was a child and being exposed to hook type lyrics.

The song "Money" by Pink Floyd was sort of ruined in the same way for me.

Ya I have been very surprised to learn in the last few months that David Gimour is arguably the greatest Guitar player if all time.
It's the notes he plays..of course....But also the notes and bars he doesn't play.

I love the two post Waters Albums. Someone posted a link to "Marrooned" already.just a masterful song.

Gilmore is an OK guitar player. He's an awesome composer/songwriter and entertainer; but he is a pretty average guitar player.

Yes guys, The Wall and DSOTM are amazing.
I didn't know or understand the concepts and poetry behind the songs until a few months ago.

Nutjob- From Breath through Time and to the Great gig in the Sky, in my opinion, should just be one song. It is in my opinion one of the most poetic and beautiful pieces of art ever created on life and death.
I lot of people don't realise that "The Great Gig In the Sky" isn't about heaven it is literally the act of someone dying put to music- what we all go through- the pain, the horror, the peace......it just blows my mind.

Katherine I think "The Wall" should probably be the first course you take in psych 101. After a life involved in medicine and thinking about these issues, Water's nails most of it in one album.

I love "The Final Act" also which is basically waters just expending on the most damaging brick of his own psychological trauma, that being the loss of his Daddy in WW2, and also a beautiful political statement on the damages of war.

I would put Pink Floyd right up there with the other obsession and great artistic love of my life Shakespeare.

yeah..... I know. Don't get me wrong, Gilmore's put together some incredible music; really, really great songs. But then, so has Jimmy Page, Edge, and Steve Howe.

The Pink Floyd, incidentally, invented the 'Ambient Music' genre; for those who don't already know that....

Maybe because I have spent my adult life around death.
But this song is both beautiful and sometimes horrifying- something every animal will go through.

We will have to have the battle posting solos
Plant in my opinion is stiff competition- but in a few vote off comparisons I have seen Gilmour comes out in top.
I love Randy Rhodes but he died soon.
And someone like Vai sort of annoys me.
Gilmour knows how to play those empty bars.
It is the pause and then the next note that just twists your mind, heart and torso that gets me...And Gilmour just gets better and better...

Well, here's some synchronicity:

“Remember when you were young… You shone like the sun.” Four thousand light years away in the constellation of Serpens, a millisecond pulsar binary is pounding out its heartbeat. Meanwhile an international research team of scientists from Australia, Germany, Italy, the UK and the USA, including Prof. Michael Kramer from Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, German are listening in. Utilizing the 64-m radio telescope in Parkes, Australia, the team made a rather amazing discovery. The companion star could very well be an ultra-low mass carbon white dwarf… one that’s transformed itself into a planet made of pure diamond.

I like to separately consider guitar players in terms of their technical prowess and the feeling/impact of their playing. Technical prowess is a more straight-forward thing to compare, but the feeling/impact is a very subjective thing.

For me, Gilmour is tops for the feeling/impact of playing, with Mark Knopfler a close second. Santa and Clapton are up there close, and are the best in their respective sub-genres (of course from the perspective of my own preferences). Derek Trucks is needs to fit in there somewhere very high, sometimes #1 or #2 if I'm in the right mood.

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, and most of the Guitar Player Magazine coverboys have amazingly honed technical skills but their method of musical expression leaves me cold and unsatisfied. I can intellectually appreciate how difficult something is to play, but that is about the extent of the value for me if the feeling/impact is not there.

[quote]Actually Sleeper, just listened to Fat Old Sun...pretty sweet. I'd probably enjoy older Floyd, I really never got into pre-Dark Side of the Moon Floyd. I just like to ruffle some of you classic rock focker's feathers from time to time.

Iand the Black Keys, channeling some Led Zep getting their THICKFREAKNESS ON:

Rock on Sleeper!

That's what I figured, Dick

I'm a big black keys fan, too!
