just coincidentally, I'm currently reading Neil Peart's "Ghost Rider", which chronicles his motorcycling through Western North America after the deaths of his daughter and wife. [It's OK/not bad/not terribly enlightening; I'll reserve full judgment until I read it all]
was really into the band in my mid teens. I think there's a high correlation between being a rush fan and a male virgin. Supporting anecdote: I lost my virginity shortly after my musical tastes graduated from Rush (and prog rock more generally) to 1960s-era jazz.
I still like the band with caveats: as far as I can tell, the band plays its songs pretty much exactly how it appeared on the album, including solos. That's dull to the point of lameness. Would go so far as to call it whitebread.
but their riffs can't be denied. Off the couch they could own any county fair battle of the bands.
edit: I wore the vinyl off "Fly By Night", "2112", and (of course) "Moving Pictures".

Rush kick's ass. Best thing that Canada ever did.
And yeah, what Neil went through is nothing short of hell on earth. Both deaths occurred in relatively short time-spans. He has turned into a different man, understandably.

Raises hand... I take a lot of sh#t from friends, but I have always been a staunch RUSH fan (aka a 'RUSH Geek'). Play many of their songs, and own all of their sheet music through Power Windows. Besides the outstanding music that comes from A, G, and N, I am truely amazed by most of Neil's lyrics... Especially Cygnus X-1 Books 1 & 2, from A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres respectively... It's Nietzsche to music, just like 2112 is Ayn Rand (Anthem) to music, or Xanadu is a Samuel Coleridge poem to music, or [the list goes on]...
Anybody read Ghost Rider: Travels On the Healing Road?

That being said, if you live in past, U R HISTORY! Time to move on folks, there's plenty of great MODERN bands I'd rather imbibe than regurgitate this dusty 'ol stuff...

S.Leeper, I just can never decide on favorites. A sign of a truly great band.
The Necromancer, Lakeside Park, Anthem, Vital Signs, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, Red Sector A, and some of the newer stuff.
Too much to choose from. I dig the band. I choose no favorites.
The newer stuff;

It's always funny when someone claims a band sucks. Music is one of the most subjective things out there.
But there are some subjective elements to music. The musicianship of Rush is great. Yeah it can be boring when you hear music played as on the album but it also shows the band CAN play it like on the album, not some sloppy or out of pitch mess (which I have heard from highly regarded bands). The drums and bass consistently rank among the best in readers polls in various musicians magazines. And IMO Alex's guitar work is seriously underrated. He doesn't play flashy, he plays to fit the song. When you hear him live and he hits almost every high speed note or nuance very accurately it's impressive. I've seen lots of other great guitar players live and he matches up with any of them. They write songs with irregular and multiple time signatures instead of just basic 4/4 time.
In the dark of age of rock in the mid 80s, after Zep broke up, Van Halen broke up, Rush carried to torch of good old rock when pretty much everything else was New Wave pop.
I can understand why people don't like Geddy's voice. But that's really not the point of the band. You don't really dance to Rush!
Popularity is no real measure of talent but it does tell you what people like. They have an impressive track record. One of the largest number of gold/platinum records of any band. Their US sales are in the top 100 of all bands. Their concert tours have done well for MANY years. But you barely hear mention of them from the mainstream "cool" people e.g. Rolling Stone magazine. But that's ok, their fans get them and appreciate them.
Their longevity and body of work is impressive. To stay together that long shows guys who compromise and work together and can put their egos aside. The sheer number of good albums they have shows a work ethic and honest desire to produce music.
Some more of my faves:
Before and After
Freewill
Countdown
I was lucky and my older brother started taking me to concerts when I was about 12. At one of our first Rush shows he left the group of kids we were with and walked up to front row center stage just before the show started, talked to the guys there and sat down. I followed him down a few minutes later and found out he had given the guys with those seats $20 to sit in their seats while they stood against the stage barrier. I sat down too. Soon the show started and we were up against the barrier (but the staff was no longer checking tickets) so we were front and center! One of my best concert experiences ever! And that includes front and center for Page and Plant, front and center for Blues Traveler and John Popper handed me a harmonica, backstage passes and meeting No Doubt (Gwen Stefani is even hotter in person), up front for SRV just before he died, and lots of others up close Van Halen, The Dead, Allman Brothers, U2, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Stones, and many more.

Fet...point taken. I just like to challenge the status quo around here. I keep seeing the same bands recycled and regurgitated on ST...Rush, Floyd, SRV, Led Zepp. etc. And while their mark in the music lore is undeniable, there's so many great new bands now that hardly receive mention.
For the record, saw Rush in '90 and thoroughly enjoyed them. Made my wife listen to them (The Trees) on our first date 13 yrs. ago and she still married me, but she and her much younger brother pushed me out of my comfort zone and introduced me to some great modern bands who are carrying the torch...I'm just trying to pass on the love. Peace.

Dick, I definitely appreciate getting turned on to new bands. But we're a bunch of old farts for the most part here. Even "new" bands tend to be a decade or more old LOL! Like RHC Peppers.
I'd heard Jet on the radio and thought they were just ok, kind of a Strokes ripoff, until a friend played the whole Get Born album on a road trip. Good stuff. Eminem's body of work is pretty impressive with a good sense of humor throughout.
I tend to get sick of the same old songs I've heard for years. But with the advent of iPhone/iPods and thousands of songs on shuffle play it helps to keep things fresh. I would love to put more time into discovering new music and adding it to my collection.
Oh and the only Rush song you can hope a woman will appreciate is Closer to the Heart.

LOL...I know, that's why I posted, snap some of us out of being creatures of habit. I'm 45, sorta on the cusp of oldness, but I love hearing new bands esp. ones that have strong influences of the older bands, who were themselves influenced by older bands...the evolution of music you could say.
Anyways, good to banter and chat with ya'll!
PS...I don't think "Closer to the Heart" will cut it with the Ms...she is very anti Rush!! Now the Black Keys or Morphine...that "OPENS" all kinds of door and "orifices" if ya know what I mean! LOL

I love RUSH.
Went to the theater to see the following rockumentary when it was first released surrounded by a theater full of Rush fans. Very cool. Felt like a Rush concert.
Rush - Beyond the Lighted Stage [2 DVD] (2010)
http://www.amazon.com/Rush-Beyond-Lighted-Stage-DVD/dp/B003J27WFW/ref=pd_bxgy_mov_img_b
In the film they mention their biggest influences were YES and Genesis. Yea buddy!!!!! (I'm a YES fan all the way.)
Prog Rock will never die. It is the music aficionados's and the real musician's choice of music.
It's deep great sounding and very complex music that can only be played by the best musicians, and lyrics that are incredibly deep and spiritual to match the music. It takes you to another world.
Word.

Certain Rush charts just make me think of climbing in the Gunks.
'Spirit of the Radio'
'YYZ' aka, Toronto International Airport
'Closer to the Heart'
'Tom Sawyer'
Probably because my buddy or I bootlegged these tunes onto cassette tape from the radio and played them during the hour drive to the cliffs many, many, many, many times...
Then again, the album 'Chicago 9' (best of Chicago #1) still reminds me of Colorado climbing....

New album and tour starting soon.
The new album harkens back to classic Rush lyrics of fantasy story lines. This is about a fictional steampunk world. It's going to be novelized by one of Neil Peart's friends.

I don't think they'll ever capture the magic of the Farewell to Kings to Moving Pictures era, but this album and this song in particular harkens back to that sound somewhat and is their best effort since then IMO.

Been on a Rush resurgence of late...I was a YUGE Rushkie in HS, especially the 2112 - Moving Pictures phases. Hemispheres remains an all-time, most important influence.
Just watched 'Beyond the Lighted Stage'...that was a great documentary, with some wonderful personal insights to their history. (Could do without Jack Black and a few other wankers, though.)
Made me look up this thread, but bummed to see most of the links posted here (esp. bluering's) have been axed by YouTube. Anybody got a workaround?
