Perhaps one of my favorite routes at J Tree is another classic put up by Tom & M&M, South of Heaven, 5.12d. It's a bit hard to find but worth the effort. One of the best aretes anywhere.

I am very sorry to hear about Tom's accident. I was honored when he came to Elsinore BMX to see me race in a Nationals (mid 1980's). He was way better on a BMX bike than I was.
Not to mention how bad ass of a climber he is.
We should all help out.

Anyone have a copy of that great poster at the Needles? Think it was Tom & Mike on "Straight to Hell", the leader up and right of the belayer near a small roof, belayer hanging at a small crack. Might have been a climbing magazine one?

Greg and all friends of Tom,

Yes, I have the photo of Tom and Mike climbing on Straight to Hell in the Needles, but it's not digitized.
I have been trying to scan it, but my scanner is't working. As soon as it's fixed, I'll post that photo and more of Tom climbing in the Needles and elsewhere.

Stay tuned...

I've known Tom and Dan as the "Wild guys from Hemet," back when I was in the thick of it...Gotta say, Tom was super cool to me and after I had an auto accident in the Park, lost a digit, and thought my life was over he gave me a Queensland Heeler puppy. I guess he knew it would help me. Cody became the love of my life for 14 years before she left me. She had a pup (Kate) that has now passed...I'll do anything for the man, he is a fine person!
Thank you brother for my Heelers, and for being such a great friend, god bless you Tom!

Here's a photo of that poster of Tom and Mike in the Needles, CA.
A late-80's thin hold test piece on the Warlock.
Extreme stuff.

I have a copy of this early 90's Climbing magazine poster in good shape.
I'll frame it and ship it to a generous donor to Tom's recovery fund.
Offers welcome.

Wishing all the best to Tom, a guy who could climb a spectacular route like this.

Small donation sent.
It seems that half a dozen or more well-known climbers currently need help. Kor, Bridwell, Romano, Bowers, Gilje, others. Some have benefited from organized events that take a lot of work. The organizers deserve huge credit. I've only done a tiny bit for 2 of these guys, but it seems we should all be ready to do that. Literally, skip dinner out and send in the money. Someone else here could do a search on discussions of starting some sort of fund. Or, just keep bumping these.

Why announce a small donation? I figure that's a good way to measure progress. I haven't looked to see whether totals are being measured elsewhere.

Would be really neat to see repeated bumps throughout the day announcing small gifts.
Stories about the person are a bonus.

Donation on the way.

I met Tom on more than several occasions. We had common friends (Coughlin Brothers) The two most memorable were:

The first time I went to Williamson Rock I was climbing with Joe (one of the Coughlin Bros) Tom was with us. I lead some 5.7 above the Mushroom Boulder. I was being lowered back to the ground. I landed directly on Tom's lunch. We all laughed....mostly at me.

Then another time at the "Power Dome" in Hemet (anyone remember that place?) I was struggling staying on the vertical wall. Tom, Dan Osman, and Hideki Suzuki, were doing laps on the ceiling/wall, and ceiling. I remember thinking "what am I doing here with these folks." All three of these guys were easy going and truly interested in me hanging with'em.

I wish Tom the best, and hope he recovers as much as possible.

M&M, after talking with you about the picture/poster of "Staight to Hell", I'll bid 100 bucks for it. I know that the image you posted is not the pristine one you are offering. It's one of my favorite climbing images and look forward to getting it back into my posession.

To all you Supertopoians I can only say the copy M&M are offering up is PROUD and you would all do well in bidding this sucker up.

I never knew Tom that well, other then stand around sessions with the hotties, but this guy always put it out there without much care of the consequences. Let's help Tom out.

cheers

I'll put together some recollections of Tom in a bit.

For now, if we have not already covered this: Todd Gordon and I figure next year's spring Joshua Tree gathering should be a benefit for Mr. Gilge. Although he's in the tough straits now, I'd imagine he'll definitely still need the money in a year ...

I think what would really help give this thing traction is to try to generate more of a presence for him here on the forum in the meantime. This means pictures. For my part, sadly I don't really have much, if any, but response here can definitely be proportional to presence.

More later and best wishes for Tom's recovery,
Roy
