Tom Gilje Zaude Fund:

Hey Everyone, here’s an update on Tom’s condition and current situation.
As some of you may know Tom was critically injured while Mountain Biking in Moab November 2010. He fractured his neck and as a result was paralyzed from his shoulders down and was on life support. At this time things looked really bad and the doctors were not sure if he would survive. After several months of therapy he has improved and is stable but has limited use in both arms and can’t move his hands or lower extremities. He is currently in a State Care Facility confined to a bed or wheelchair hoping to return home to Moab.
Tom’s climbing career started in the 70’s at Tahquitz and Suicide Rocks. He quickly became a very talented climber, bold soloist and developed many extreme first accents. Tom has contributed much to the climbing community in the past few decades. With climbing partners Dan Osman, Mike Lechlinski and Mari Gingery, Tom was a driving force in developing new routes throughout the western U.S.
This is going to be a very tough road for Tom. He needs our financial support to help rebuild his life. Tom needs help with medical bills, ongoing expenses, handicap improvements and basic necessities for his future home to help him face this life changing event.
Please post stories and pictures about Tom to help get this fund going and send Tom some good energy.
Let’s all pitch in and help Tom out. Donations can be mailed or electronically deposited to his account:

Ok guys, time to help out another in our community. terrible news and I pray that Tom can continue to recover. I remember Gilje from the 70's in Josh and he was always pushing the limits, great guys and funny as hell around the fires.
Thanks for putting up the info for his account Scott, keep us posted and let Tom know we're pulling for him.

Tom was one of the first people I met when I moved to Hemet around 1980.

Lots of great memories-- getting rousted by the cops for nighttime buildering at one of the strip malls.

Tom getting off scott free during a fireworks celebration at JTree while Erler got hauled off to the hoosegow.

Glad to hear that he's regained some movement. I hope the climbing community can help Tom during this difficult time.

Tom was one of the boldest climbers I've ever roped up with. A real tiger on & off the rock. Tom continues to me a real inspiration to myself & many others I'm sure.

I watched, slack-jawed one day at Suicide rocks when Tom walked up to Insomnia & free soloed it just after I had barely led it clean. He just cruised it & made it look 5.8.

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the update, I was always in awe of Tom when we were all living up in Idyllwild. I remember one day he asked me to show him all the stuff Borne had been doing over at Black Mountain. Just the two us wandering around, me belaying him on routes I couldn't touch.

In the end, he did all the hardest routes in short order and then I expected the normal slander on the ratings Paul had giving all his routes (common for the day) but Tom was real respectful, he was pretty happy to have done them. It was a great day, one I always remember.

Cindy, Sierra and I have sent some money. I wish it could be more.

Hope you and Robyn are well and praying more good strength to Tom

Tom (and his group) held us all to the highest standards, and expected nothing less ethically (of us and themselves).

I've always thought higher of people that walk their talk. Tom is definitely one of those individuals.

Had a bad bike crash myself about a year ago. It's scary how things can change as a result of something that happens so quickly.

I sincerely hope Tom can get past all of this and enjoy the rock again.

This is great! Thanks everyone for supporting Tom.
Growing up with Tom, I think he was born bold. I remember the first time we climbed Tahquitz rock. We were just kids spending the day stomping around the mountain, when an old hemp rope caught our eye stashed in a tree snag. Tom suggested we climb lily rock. So with no gear and no real climbing experience, we tied into our leather belts and headed up the big stone. After a few pitches we herd people yelling asking what route we were on, Tom and I looked at each other and said “what’s a route?” And we continued on to the summit the rest is history

Tom is responsible for a number of ferocious, and very high quality free climbs around Moab. Sorry to hear this news. The rehab must be awful; unrelenting, frustrating and grueling. Sounds like the nerves are reconnecting and recovering somewhat. Nerves are so slow to repair, there will be many more months of gradual healing and improvement. Best wishes for much more progress.

I've known Tom and Dan as the "Wild guys from Hemet," back when I was in the thick of it...Gotta say, Tom was super cool to me and after I had an auto accident in the Park, lost a digit, and thought my life was over he gave me a Queensland Heeler puppy. I guess he knew it would help me. Cody became the love of my life for 14 years before she left me. She had a pup (Kate) that has now passed...I'll do anything for the man, he is a fine person!
Thank you brother for my Heelers, and for being such a great friend, god bless you Tom!

Small donation sent.
It seems that half a dozen or more well-known climbers currently need help. Kor, Bridwell, Romano, Bowers, Gilje, others. Some have benefited from organized events that take a lot of work. The organizers deserve huge credit. I've only done a tiny bit for 2 of these guys, but it seems we should all be ready to do that. Literally, skip dinner out and send in the money. Someone else here could do a search on discussions of starting some sort of fund. Or, just keep bumping these.

Why announce a small donation? I figure that's a good way to measure progress. I haven't looked to see whether totals are being measured elsewhere.

Would be really neat to see repeated bumps throughout the day announcing small gifts.
Stories about the person are a bonus.

Donation on the way.

I met Tom on more than several occasions. We had common friends (Coughlin Brothers) The two most memorable were:

The first time I went to Williamson Rock I was climbing with Joe (one of the Coughlin Bros) Tom was with us. I lead some 5.7 above the Mushroom Boulder. I was being lowered back to the ground. I landed directly on Tom's lunch. We all laughed....mostly at me.

Then another time at the "Power Dome" in Hemet (anyone remember that place?) I was struggling staying on the vertical wall. Tom, Dan Osman, and Hideki Suzuki, were doing laps on the ceiling/wall, and ceiling. I remember thinking "what am I doing here with these folks." All three of these guys were easy going and truly interested in me hanging with'em.

I wish Tom the best, and hope he recovers as much as possible.

I'll put together some recollections of Tom in a bit.

For now, if we have not already covered this: Todd Gordon and I figure next year's spring Joshua Tree gathering should be a benefit for Mr. Gilge. Although he's in the tough straits now, I'd imagine he'll definitely still need the money in a year ...

I think what would really help give this thing traction is to try to generate more of a presence for him here on the forum in the meantime. This means pictures. For my part, sadly I don't really have much, if any, but response here can definitely be proportional to presence.

More later and best wishes for Tom's recovery,

I am deeply saddened to hear of Tom's accident. He was a powerful influence
on the socal climbing community, and a full-on legend, for decades.

Only climbed with him once; he showed up at an obscure bouldering area/project
of mine, way, way the heck down south on some remote dirt road. How he found us
that day, I'll never know.

This was pre-sticky rubber, still climbing in EB's, Scats, or whatever else worked. Tom
arrived with a young (pre-"Dano") Dan Osman, and proceded to do what he did;
3 rd class the highest thing (a 10.b fist crack) and make several dynamic attempts
on the hardest thing; a leaning rib up a huge buldge.

Wow, it was a big deal, these guys showing up and sort of acknowledging us, and
checking out our thing. Gilje came, he saw, sent, did bowls with us, then cruised on.
A freaking legend; he had already third classed Insomnia.

Holy sh*t.

Once again, very sorry (and saddened) to hear about this terrible accident; it is as if a fabled warrior has fallen, and it is my sincere hope we can pitch in and help Tom out.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and contrabutions. I have some good news about Tom's situation. He has recently been moved back home to a care facility in Moab. This was a huge step for Tom to start rebuilding his life. Robyn and I will be visiting him soon and install voice activated software in his computer. Roy mentioned possibly having next years fundraiser at J.T. for Tom. I think it's a great idea and Tom would be honored. Tom wants everyone to know how much their support means to him. It's really helped his moral! Thanks again to everyone for your continued support.

I never really got to know Tom that well. My interaction with him always seemed to be in a parking lot situation, before he and Dano or M&M would go off and climb routes I could never have gotten up, so my knowledge of him was via stories other people or the mags would render, like the time he and Dano Amtrak'd Loose Lips at Josh before it fell down. In my mind his climbing exploits rank right up with Bachar et al. What I'm hoping will surface are tales of "T the Ho from He" (Tom the Hottie/Honed from Hemet). Does anyone out there who knew him care to share a story or two? M&M have always been more then a little reticient about posting up so I'm hoping others might have something to share.

We are in the process of planning a Joshua Tree fundraiser for Tom next fall or winter. I have some ideas to make it a great event, and one that can help Tom out with the challenges he now faces in his life. I am sure that many and most of his friends are ready to help out, and many already have helped out with Tom and his needs. As many Southern California climbers who started climbing in the 70s.....Tom was always around, always banging it out, and always dedicated to pushing it,...be it on a bicycle, a motorcycle, a dune buggy, on a rope, or without a rope;......a true inspiration to all, and a great friend. It is time to step up and help out, and I'm sure we can all get together on this one quite easily;....Tom would do the same for us if we needed help. Keep this thread alive, and I'll post details of the fundraiser as soon as we get things planned out;....it will be a great event to help out a great friend, and I look forward to all aspects of such an event. With all of our combined efforts, care, and concerns for Tom and helping Tom out, it will be a massively successful event, I am sure of this. Best wishes to Tom and his continued progress in dealing with his life-changing injuries and super challenges he now faces;.....Tom was never one to back away or bow down to a good challenge;....he now faces his greatest challenges yet;.....and his friends are behind him 100% all the way.....this he can count on for sure.

On another front...

Some of you here will already know that I am working on a new guidebook for The Needles with Kevin Daniels as co-author and publisher. Similarly to Randy Vogel’s new Joshua Tree Classics book – also published by Kevin - local history will be an important focus in our book. Of course when one looks at the climbing which has been done in The Needles, Tom Gilje’s legacy is huge.

After Tom’s accident Kevin expressed a desire to help, and we began talking about ways in which the book could be of some benefit to Tom. The most obvious thing will be to donate a percentage of the sales receipts to his fund. As publisher Kevin will make the arrangements when the book hits the shelves.

Additionally we want to put in it a full page “ad,” for lack of a better word, encouraging people to contribute to the Tom Gilje fund. In terms of creating this page, we would welcome contributions in the form of suitable photographs, classic stories and trivia, and design work if anyone is so inclined. If you have ideas or stuff regarding Tom you want to contribute for use on this page (or elsewhere in the book,) feel free to contact me privately via my ST email or just post up here.

Best wishes to Tom.

Right on Pat, way to step up for your bro. Pat bid 100 dollars for the Straight to Hell poster that Mari is offering. Having seen the poster up close, it is simply one of the finest climbing photos that I've ever seen. I'm going to up the ante and bid 200 dollars on it. I know Pat will be a little bummed, but way more stoked for Tom, and I'll feel the same way if someone out there can step it up even more so.

Looks like from that pic that Tom has some use of his right arm and that is a relief. I hope he keeps improving. I'm going to talk to the other guys at Stonemaster Press and auction off some books to get a little fund going for Tom.

I'm going to up the bid to 300 dollars. I really liked the copy I had and when it was stolen out of my classroom (by another teacher no less) I didn't think I'd be lucky enough to get another one.

HI all,
Checking back in on bids for the poster of Straight to Hell in the Needles:

can't say has topped the bids with $300 for the Gilje fund.
So at this point...

can't say YOU WIN!
You can send that donation directly to Tom's fund, and I'll get the framed poster to you pronto.

Thanks to the others who offered bids to help Tom out.

since idyllwild is back on the front page, i thought i'd bump this.

followed tom on man who fell to earth, many years ago. i remember tom took a pretty big whipper in that weird, flared crack section.

but he went back up and finished the lead.

there was a hold at the crux that looked chipped.

i yarded on it shamelessly.

We just visited Tom a few days ago, his spirits are good and he is working hard to gain more strength in his shoulder with positive hopes of someday being able to push a hand drivin bicycle or a light weight specialized wheelchair that will allow him to get around on his own. Every time we visit Tom he's shown improvement and we know this is a goal he will achieve. However, Tom's account needs some serious help to purchase even a used bike or chair. October 23rd is Tom's 50th birthday; a great time to show our support! Thanks to all of you for your help.

What????? I missed Tom's 50th birthday?!?!
Hope it was a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM (and many more...)

From the Early Years file. Tom in Joshua Tree belayed by Yabo, with Mike watching.

Climbing with Tom and friends was always sure to lead to the newest, hardest climbs around and some kind of adventure. Never had more fun than the summers spent at the Needles grazing on perfect granite, and winters in Josh wrangling with the subtleties of monzonite. Tom was always there and ready to square off with the hard problem of the day.

Happy to have the opportunity to assist Tom. Hope that funds in his account will help arrange whatever he needs to be more mobile and comfortable.
