some climbers who told him the idea was stupid and that he could never throw his little line, tied to a stick, over to us on the spire.

Seems true but the first ascent of the spire was done by throwing a rope over it and jugging up the other side. That must have felt pretty sketch.


As I recall the story, the FA of the Spire was done by throwing a thin, fishing line cord over the top, and then pulling a rope. The rest of the myth has the hapless jugger smoking down a handful of cigarettes prior to his uber-sketchy rope ascent to the summit.

Uhh, it kind of is a sport climb, just with bad bolts. You've got chiseled two finger pockets and two bolts within a half inch of each other...seems like a sport climb.
