All Over.
Topic Author's Original Post - Feb 13, 2011 - 06:26pm PT
I'm two days in.

I'm not a smoker, but a good ol' boy who chews.
C'mon, my first job, at fifteen, was logging.

Wish me luck, this is going to be difficult.

If I get snarky, I apologize.

Consider changing "all over" in your profile to "quitting tobacco" for the interim.

That will do it.

I've been thinking lately of changing my name on Supertopo. I don't really feel like a Dick Head.

Maybe a name-change will be cathartic and aid in the tobacco drop.

Maybe not, who knows?

I'm open to suggestions for a new handle, though.

I just think it'd be fun to rename myself.

Good choice man!

I was a smoker for years, and finally managed to kick the habit about 3 years ago, hopefully for good.

I used the patches, and one thing that may help you:

Before I quit, I sat down and made a list of WHEN I lit up, and the things that would make me WANT to - stress, arguements etc.

Once I had a list of these triggers, it was way easier for me to combat the mental addiction along with the physical part.

Maybe that will help you in your quest to stop chewing. Good luck! It's a great choice to stop!

It's funny to think of it this way, but I'm in more immediate contact with you denizens of ST than I am with my group of friends here in super rural NH.

I see my friends often, but the feedback helps when I'm chillin' at home.

Evenings are the hardest, I usually finish dinner, walk the dogs, and have a chawski.

Dialogue helps.

You can do it Brandon, good luck and be strong.

I smoked cigs from '85-'95, quit for five years and then smoked again from '00-'09, almost a total of 20 years. One day I just got sick and tired of buying, smoking and people bumming them off of me so I decided it was time. I looked at my watch so I would remembered the date. It happend to be 9/9/09... a good day to quit, haven't smoked one since.

I thought of how they controlled me and told myself "You are in control".

I thought of my climbing, my friends, my family, and that this is NOT the hardest thing I have ever done.

Hey man,

I "grew up" in WV (no offense!). Have had the habit since. My best go at it was using "Smokey Mountain Snuff" Its herbal, and has some qualities that mimic the "experience"(King Soops, City Market, or other propriety sell it at 2.50 a tin). A far bit light but helped. I've tried countless times. As appreciated as smokers who quit and their input we chewers are a different breed. What I find is that with smoking, if I go on that binge, the benefits are easily found. Chewing on the other hand are far less observed. I'd like to see some other ideas from non-smoking tobacco users who have quit successfully; although we try to remain anonymous. The patch gave me weird dreams but that smokey mountain stuff helped a lot. Ultimately I'm still a slave but man good luck to ya!

Cheers!!!

I quit a pack a day habit a few months ago. Granted, I'd "only" been at a pack a day for 8 months and not 10 years, but still, that's a lot.

I used an e-cigarette for about a month at first. It almost completely replaced regular cigs right away. Once my cough went away and my breathing improved, the next step was to start working out hard and often. I knew if I made a change like that to my life, smoking would be too incongruous to also be in there.

Then eventually, though i'd planned to ween down on the e-cig, it simply broke, so I just jumped off nicotine altogether. It wasn't all that tough, actually at that point.

Now it's been about 6 weeks. I've smoked a few here and there, such as bumming one from a friend when out, but I haven't bought any and have gone from 20 a day to about 10 a week.

Silver, I just trail run more because I really can't stop eating since I quit chewing. Hopefully as I clean out I'll Become less in need of replacement behaviors. I'm committed to be finished and running helps burn the extra calories that is screwing with my climbing endeavors. I just turned 50 this year so it's about time I get more wholesome. Climbing with tobacco since I was 16. Aaarggg! Like Brandons sentiment, I hope I dodged the cancer bullet. I'll probably have a coronary now due to becoming a fat ass. Slabs here I come!

Now problem Silver I wish you Luck and Strength. My Kids are older now but I remember when my 3 y/o daughter asked me why do I eat "Black" and could she have some, damn near choked when I heard that one. Another chew indiscretion involved a neighbor coming to our house when we first moved in with our newborn to welcome us to the hood. I had just gotten off of a long shift, had already had a beer and was spitting into the bottle and laying on the couch watching the kid out the corner of my tired eye as she swings in her swing chair. I welcome the new neighbor in and offer him a seat on the couch where my beer bottle of spit was sitting on the floor near the couch. Well he walks over to have a seat and kicks the bottle over and it lurps up onto his foot and ankle. He was wearing flip-flops and the chew was infused with viscous luggi. I was mortified and slightly uncomfortable. Should have quit then and there.

I'm building a house right now. 7:00 start time, so only time for coffee on the drive in. Nobody smokes or chews on the crew, so there's no place for it on the job. I get home and have a chaw.

I'm keeping it to a minimum, but it's still unfortunately a part of my life.

On the flip side, I'm not a slave to it, I have no cravings during the day at all. It's just another tobacco free workday.

Congrats to all of you who successfully kicked for good. I'll join your ranks soon.

No body grew up dreaming about smoking and drinking. You're a pariah now if you do either, a loser and and chump. I was all of those things and more, and the only thing better than nicotine is quitting. Once you set your mind to it, you're finished with it. As I've said, I felt like I was on LSD for the first week. I used to struggle with stopping till I understood I wasn't really committed to giving the whole thing up.

Good fortune to all who try. Not many can do it, I am told. Such a shame to die from what was so good at the start.

Mister E, I don't think Largo was sayin that about smokers/chewers, just pointing out that society in general kinda tends to think that way, and the attitude is becoming more and more prevalent as the stigma grows in step with the increasing number of non-smokers... I was on the tobacco tit for 10 years myself, quit, slipped and repeated 4 or 5 times before it "stuck"... It's tough for some, easier for others, all folks react differently to the lack of the nicotine I reckon... In any case, just keep truckin' till you find your particular "key" to quitting for good... I admire anyone engaging in the battle to quit... Congratulations on the decision to quit, all of you.

Son of a gun.

I've been lurking and reading Lolli's thread.

It showed to me what an abject failure my quit has been.

I go for a month, maybe more, maybe less, then I fall back on old habits.

The winter is the worst, I do most of my work in the warm months, and end up sitting at home through the cold months.

This year is worse than most, ACL injury is keeping me couched.

Any criticism aimed at me is fine, as I've already written about leaving this site.

After 8 years of smoking, I just passed the 2 month barrier tobacco free. I went cold turkey on this, I figured I was stronger then the addiction. Having friends and co-workers that smoke does make the addiction something I face everyday, but I do feel better about myself every night when I get to fall asleep after kissing my babe good night with out the smell of smoke on my breath.
I had a realization the other day while talking with a good friend who does smoke. With enough death around us every day, I didn't want to leave this world with tobacco being the cause. Not because it would be a painful way to go, but I don't want the people I love, to have to know I did this to myself even though they asked and sometimes, even begged me to quit. It was something they rarely nagged me about, but they still cared enough about me to mention it. The way I figure, I love them enough to oblige their request.
Call it opulent self worth, or whatever you want, I'll just call myself tobacco free on December 27th 2012. Until then its a work in progress.

I have never felt so high as the first week I was off nic after 30 years on it.

They tell me kicking nicotine is harder that putting down heroin.

All of you out there giving your health a chance, I'm behind you all the way. Call me anytime and rant and come over and throw sh#t at me but get off the nic. It's a killer.

And I loved it so... I'm irrational like that.

It's great that you keep trying, Brandon.

It must be really hard in New Hampshire in the winter, while injured. But Spring is coming soon and hopefully you'll be out playing more, even if it's not climbing for now.

After quitting and going back, do you at least find that you are smoking less?

Keep up the fight!

I got some great news on Thanksgiving Day.
My dear niece's husband (nephew-in-law!), an exceptional father and all-
around great guy, just passed the one-year mark, kicking a can-a-day
chew addiction that had lasted more than twenty years!!
I am so proud of him!!

I finally quit Nov. 1, 2011. Over a year now completely cigarette free after 28 years of smoking like a fiend. Definitely the hardest think I have ever accomplished. You’ll feel like you’ve been to hell and back but you can do it.

Nice job to everyone who has been able to quit chew or cigs or whatever vice/addiction-it's tough stuff. I've watched my dad try so hard to quit smoking cigs (he has smoked since he was 12), and he has had times where he quit for a couple of years, then back on, then quit... I really worry about him now... I smoked from 15-25... I quit at 25 when it was suggested I might meet a nice man if I quit...

Vices/addictions are difficult, I REALLY want to quit drinking soda, it's EVIL, and really seems hopeless. I even once went to try to get hypnotized because nothing else was working. I was informed that I would not be a candidate for hypnosis... so I continue to wish I could quit, HA! I think soda will be viewed as cigarettes are now as time progresses. I have a 32oz mixture of Coke & Coke Zero each day-horrid chemical combination-love it & loathe it.

I can say that this is 100% true.

I'm vaporizing nic right now. Better than smoking, but still a nic-monkey.

Keep trying, everyone. It's kind of a toss-up between obesity and cigs addiction which is the greater risk factor for everything that will kill you faster, or make your quality of life the most miserable.

Quit. Be healthy.

HA HA, I read the thread title as "quitting the Taco"

I've never been a smoker, but not sure which would be harder to quit?
