k-man,

Appreciate your post about the difficulty of communication by keyboard. I think any form of communication has troubles, but particularly those we cannot edit.

I always thought I was reasonably articulate in court. Well, at least that's what my clients and court reporters always told me. When I'd read a transcript of my arguments, though, they often sounded less well-crafted than I thought they were at the time. For that reason, I'm not even sure that face-to-face communication aways conveys what I mean.

At least, as you ponit out, we can edit before we post. I must admit, though, that I always seem to catch errors after I post, even though I usually proofread before I hit the "post" button.

Repubs Dump Steele, Hire New Guy;

OXON HILL, Md. — The national Republican Party, coming off huge election victories but facing a $22 million debt and an internal war over identity, ousted chairman Michael Steele Friday and chose Wisconsin party chief Reince Priebus to lead in the run-up to the 2012 presidential race.

The embattled Steele dropped his re-election bid halfway through an afternoon of balloting when it became clear he could not win another two-year term after a first marked by verbal missteps and financial woes.

"We have to get on track. And together we can defeat Barack Obama in 2012," Priebus, the chairman of the Wisconsin GOP, said in a brief victory speech, pleading for unity within the fractured 168-member Republican National Committee. "We all recognize that there's a steep hill here ahead of us, and the only way that we'll be able to move forward is if we're all together."

The new chairman's name is pronounced Ryns Pree'-bus.

A former top lieutenant to Steele, Priebus promised to hire top-notch staff, restructure the organization and put it on solid financial footing so the next GOP presidential nominee will be prepared to take on Obama. Later, he rejected suggestions the national party organization's power might have waned, given the proliferation of outside groups that have assumed campaign functions the party historically has performed.

"It's very relevant," he said.

For the next two years, Priebus will try to prove that.

Most urgently, the new chairman must retire an RNC debt of about $22 million owed to vendors and banks, as well as lure back demoralized donors who have been so frustrated with Steele's management that they sent their dollars elsewhere or didn't open their wallets at all last year. The party had only about $1 million cash on hand at year's end.

He'll also serve as the party top spokesman promoting its agenda, countering Democrats, raising money to help Republicans and improving a get-out-the-vote effort that critics say languished under Steele.

the world according to hedge:

"take harry reid out" = an "open" call to kill harry reid and a clear example of violent repub rhetoric

"stand [rick scott, repub candidate in fl] against a wall and shoot him" = an obvious metaphor to vote for the dem and a clear example of the good humor and tough talk of a friendly campaign

i'm so dumb that i actually think "kill" might be construed to mean, well, KILL...but "take out" is actually right-wing code for murder

here's another one for you hedge:

LEB states:
Angle used a poor choice of words, for sure, but her meaning was just about the same as the example I cited. She was not literally advocating that someone assassinate Reid.

How on earth can you read into her mind and what she meant? She had many many occasions to disavow herself from any violent intent. She did not do so.

As I said before, and to which you did not respond, you made this huge deal about American Muslims as being complicit in 911, because YOU did not see them refuting the action afterwards. (although many posters showed you where they did). So your logic would say that Angle's silence and Palin's silence (except to try to push blame away from them) would, IN YOUR OPINION, USING YOUR LOGIC, make them complicit!

John,

Shane is one of my best friends. I have worked off and on for him in one way or another for something like 20 years. I met him a couple of weeks after he opened his first his store back in the early 80's when his store was on Bullard and West. (Even before he was on Blackstone.)

I watched him help a couple that was just getting into backpacking. I have never witnessed a more compassionate, knowledgeable, funloving man go about the Mountaineering business than he does.

I am proud to know Shane. His work on trail crew has been one the best things to ever happen to the Sierra. The work he and the volunteers do dwarfs anything Face lift does.

They should work together in my opinion.

Shane has a mobile kitchen he has offered to lend for Facelift. (if the timing can be worked out) It can easily feed for free every volunteer if the operations are run correctly.

Skip

Skip is telling the truth in this post, as far as I know. I know him through Shane and Cal Outfitters. In my earlier post I'd stated that he'd worked there, and that was my recollection, but it may have not been true, he may have only been a "former employee", and I didn't appreciate the difference. I continue to do trail work through Shane's organization, and talk to him weekly. (I'll be up there wed). And he does have a hell of an organization for feeding volunteers, he does REI yearly retreats at Josh and Yos.

LEB:

-painless hematuria. Very very young for a tumor. Far more likely to be a spontaneously ruptured vein, which will spontaneously heal. Watchful waiting would be an approach.

From 2003-2007, the median age at diagnosis for cancer of the urinary bladder was 73 years of age3X Close
Table I-11 (http://seer.cancer.gov/csr/ 1975_2007/results_single/ sect_01_table.11_2pgs.pdf). Approximately 0.1% were diagnosed under age 20; 0.5% between 20 and 34; 1.8% between 35 and 44; 7.5% between 45 and 54; 17.9% between 55 and 64; 27.4% between 65 and 74; 32.1% between 75 and 84; and 12.8% 85+ years of age.

All Races 37.2 per 100,000 men
American Indian/Alaska Native a 13.3 per 100,000 men

So, in your case, 1/4 the incidence of the previous 0.5%

Awfully low risk of cancer. Probably much increased risk of vascular rupture, since DM vasculature is known not normal. Opportunity to get better compliance.

I seriously doubt that Sharon Angle intended to mean that anyone should assassinate Harry Reid. If she did, she should have her citizenship stripped for sedition. I believe that she was appealing to a segment of the populace that DO believe in violent action, that politicians do not often speak to....she was pandering for votes from those people.

But that doesn't change the effect of her words, which is to encourage exactly that sort of thing, even if she is too hair-brained to understand it. In the setting of political debate, where people are VERY passionate, they become enflamed. Some, who may not be of sound mind, who may not be the sharpest sticks in the pack, may be led to take action, by the statements of leaders.

This has happened in history.
This is why people running for office don't tell their supporters that they don't need to bother voting!

Words have consequences. Most of us adults understand that from sorry experience, and so, choose our words much more carefully than we did when younger.

Posting a map of the USA with crosshairs pointing the locaton of democratic politicians and encouraging voters to take Harry Reid out is similar to yelling " fire in a theater"...LEB ...can you explain what Angle really meant by advocating taking Harry Reid out..? x+y+z equals murder when one always see's Palin with a rifle standing over a dead animal or her cross-hairs ad and her corny metaphors which always seem to involve violence directed at some democratic congressman...Palin is a simpleton and anyone that tries to defends Palin's wreckless advocation of violence has earned the same label...rj
