Obama has a good sense of priorities. Gets bored when nothing is happening.

Regan was even better at that. Stuff would happen and he didn't even know about it. Too busy being president or whatever.

I hate it when presidents comment and react to every little news item. Clinton and Bush did that a lot. Obama does too. Regan NEVER.

I'm a republican philosophically but the Republican Party has utterly betrayed us for so long, screwed things up. I look to the Democrats now for lower taxes, smaller government, and fiscal responsibility. Since I've never seen Glen Beck and I don't listen to Rush (except to laugh at his buffoonery), I've got no major problems with this dude.

Who I'm really looking for though is a Julius Cesar. He expanded the empire and made foreigners pay all the taxes. If he were president, like in the 1940's. Japan, Germany & Italy would be paying taxes to the USA and the US citizens would pay nothing. If we had to go in and fix up or defend any other country, it would be all or nothing. They would get to keep their culture, and enjoy uninterrupted prosperity and productivity and would thank us with 10% of all their income.

See, you got me started.

Did George Bush ever answer every question the press had? Has any president ever answered all the questions the press has? Is it even possible to answer every question the press has? Have you ever even watched a press conference? The president never sticks around to answer every question. Thats what press secretaries are for.

According to the account I read of Clinton's press conference, Obama left early because he had to join Michelle at another scheduled White House Christmas party where many people were waiting to meet them. The press conference was ad hoc and unscheduled. Working it into the president's busy schedule had alreadytaken some spontaneous scrambling on the part of the White House staff.

Hey, guys, you defend this Bozo if you wish. Skipping out in the middle of a press conference is just about as unpresidential as it gets. I say it is emblematic of his whole attitude towards his job and his country.

Each time I hear one of these stories - I just shake my head in utter amazement.

LEB: It might be worth considering whether your outrage has more to do with your own anxiety than with whether or not his departure from the press conference was doing right by the office. I'm not going to go overboard to defend his presidency (nor cut loose on Bush by contrast), but I will maintain that any good leader (regardless of party affiliation or even job) knows there are times when no amount of explanation, data, or reframing will satisfy the chronically anxious.

He's not responsible for what makes you or anyone else nervous...not by staying up late and working on Saturdays to answer every question you or others might have for him...not by still being at the press conference until everyone's question is satisfied to everyone's satisfaction...not by satisfying you with his work ethic. "Michelle, I'm sorry about missing dinner tonight, but LEB's got a few more questions for me...and there might be someone else who does, too." Do ya follow?

LEB, you gave no information that said he was going to dinner.

He held a press conference. He said what he had to say. The primary purpose of the press conference was for Clinton to say what he thought about Obama's compromise plan. Obama was decoration, so he excused himself.

You have given NO information as to what he left the room to do. Clinton continued the press conference for another 1/2 hour.

You have made a baseless accusation. Do you think that the only function of the President's wife is to serve as arm furniture for the President?

This kind of crap is disgusting.

gf, if you're talking about re-defing the American manufacturing industry away from Taiwan and especially China, I'm on board.

This is where I dissassociate with "corporate AMerica". We have sold out for cheap labor at the expense of the American worker and American quality.

Just today I sat in an engineering meeting where the head Eng was looking over one of our boards (high speed Audio DSP) and pointed to the 'Made in USA' silkscreen on the fab, giving me a thumbs up. I returned it obviously.

We have the skill, but we don't have the will.

I''ve laid out my plans here before and I get called nationalistic, xenophobic, and whatever.

We need to rebuild our manufacfacturing base with the help of Mezxican labor, not Chinese. It makes sense on so many levels.

We need to look to Mexico, not China, as our friend in manufacturing.

It solves many problems you can prolly figure out,

A totally normally scenario, involving good family values and everything. And clever of him to sucker Clinton into taking care of things for him. Probably the first American president since Carter who simply went out for dinner with his wife sometimes.

John who?

If you are addressing me, I can only repeat what I have said many times starting in October 2008. The trillions in credit default swaps issued were never backed by hard money. So letting them fail would have, in no way, changed the actual value of the positions they supposedly insured. The investors would simply have had to accept they had made a risky bet. There should have been no TARP. Banks should have been allowed to fail and responsible parties pursued in civil and criminal court. Small depositors should have been protected as by the FDIC. Intead of putting a wall streeter in Treasury, Obama should have put Sheila Bair in as Secretary. She is the one with the experience and staff qualified to crawl under broken corporations with a sledge hammer, so as to part them out onto the market.

We should return to the pre-Bush tax rates. If we are to accept debt it should be to build a changed infrastructure atuned to the future. And to support innovation of new products that can be made in the US. It is easy to say we cannot compete in commodity markets, such as building computers, but it is not clear what we face is to be easy. Part by part it will be a judgment call.

We have to stop letting corporations and special interests formulate our national policies.

Possibly we are now at a turning point where foreign investors are ever less convinced the dollar is the safest reserve currency. I don't know. If so,

look out.

There is only one justice in the whole thing. The taxpayer/voter will be the ones to fall under the wheel for their inept decisions and failure to pay attention.

The real story reported with no bias or agenda:

By BEN FELLER, AP White House Correspondent Ben Feller, Ap White House Correspondent – Fri Dec 10, 9:19 pm ET
WASHINGTON – No comment? No way. You don't stop Bill Clinton when he's back at the White House with something to say.

Well, OK. He and President Barack Obama, two of the most famous men in the world, did need a little help getting a door unlocked first.

But then it was on.

The former president came before surprised reporters to let it be known that he endorsed the tax deal that Obama cut with the Republican Party, even though many Democrats were raising a fuss about it.

That was the news. But it wasn't the story.

What had the West Wing buzzing was the scene itself: Clinton in his element, like he had never left. And almost like he wasn't going to leave this time.

For one remarkable half hour, Clinton turned a seemingly slow Friday afternoon into his stage.

He tutored in loving detail about economic theory and nuclear disarmament. He was short on time, yet somehow found some for just one more question. He bit on his lip and spread his arms as he spoke and did all those other familiar gestures.

In a town of scripted rollouts and talking points, the way this event unfolded was refreshingly and remarkably impromptu.

There was to be no press coverage allowed of Obama's meeting with Clinton. No photos, no questions, not even a written statement about what happened.

That changed when Obama and Clinton wrapped up their private meeting in the Oval Office. Clinton wanted to publicly endorse the tax package. Obama is welcoming all the help he can get.

So the two presidents headed straight for the famous briefing room with no warning.

Except they couldn't get in.

The door was locked because press staff members were at their holiday party in the Executive Mansion.

Obama and Clinton went back up a hall and found a press aide at her desk. "Do you know how to open up the briefing room?" Obama asked.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs heard the voices outside his office, walked out and saw the two presidents.

"What are you guys up to?" Gibbs recalled saying.

"We're looking for some reporters," the presidents told Gibbs.

So the White House press staff scrambled, summoning all available media to the briefing room and setting up a live feed for the networks in minutes. The presidents stood waiting, behind a closed door, until Gibbs stalled long enough to let correspondents take their spots.

Obama introduced Clinton lightly as "the other guy" and recalled how Clinton has overseen heady economic times. Obama warned that he wouldn't be staying long — another White House Christmas party was waiting, as was his wife, Michelle.

And so it became clear pretty quickly that this was Clinton's show.

"I feel awkward being here, and now you're going to leave me all by myself," Clinton said from the stage of the White House briefing room.

Not that awkward.

Clinton comfortably outlined how the pending package of tax cuts, business incentives and unemployment benefits would boost the economy — even though it included tax help for the wealthy that Obama had to swallow.

"There's never a perfect bipartisan bill in the eyes of a partisan," Clinton said. "But I really believe this will be a significant net-plus for the country."

When he finished his pitch, Clinton played the role of humble guy, saying, "So, for whatever it's worth, that's what I think."

"It's worth a lot," Obama insisted.

Clinton was asked what advice he had for Obama, given the context of the times: the current president has to deal with a Republican Party that just won a convincing victory in the midterm election and will soon grab control of the House. Clinton faced the same halfway through his embattled first term in 1994, worked some major deals with the opposing party and rebounded to re-election.

"I have a general rule," Clinton said, "which is that whatever he asked me about my advice, and whatever I say should become public only if he decides to make it public." Obama didn't provide that permission, saying: "I've been keeping the First Lady waiting for about half an hour, so I'm going to take off."

The current president left it to Gibbs to decide when Clinton's questioning would be cut off.

Yeah, right ...

Gibbs couldn't cut off Clinton, and neither could Clinton's own aide. Only Clinton could stop Clinton.

The former president spoke about credit markets and Haiti and principled compromise and structural deficits.

Clinton was asked if he was happier being in the White House as a guest speaker than as president.

"Oh, I had quite a good time governing," a smiling Clinton said. "I am happy to be here, I suppose, when the bullets that are fired are unlikely to hit me."

When it was over, Obama aides and others in the room wore the look of those who couldn't believe the glimpse of political Americana they just saw.

"It was," said Gibbs, "as spontaneous as it could be."

At 1", Obama explains why Clinton is there. Clinton does seem embarrassed. I am watching the press conference now.

EDIT: That White House Correspondent report is PRICELESS! This is really incredible stuff.

EDIT EDIT: He hasn't said it the way Clinton does, but at least he has the sense and humility to give Clinton a stage to say what he has to say! You can say things like "Mexican Standoff" when you're no longer president. "Oh, I had quite a good time governing. (Wink.)" Oh, I'm sure you did, Mr. President.

The Republicans drug the whole country down to an all time low. I am fully prepared to give the Dems at LEAST the same amount of time to correct the damage.

I make enough $$ to vote Republican, but I also am smart enough to think for myself and have enough of a social conscious to realize giving the ultrawealthy even further tax breaks is ridiculous right now.

It's too bad the Republibots can not think for themselves and see they are voting for their impossible dreams, not for the reality of their situation. This was an experiment to see if it would be automatically underlined. No need to show the other experiment when I spelled it out.

I commented already that posts intended to insult and discussions limited to something other than real issues mean both that there is no real chance for discussion and it means our community, culture and nation are going to fail, probably in the near term. The final plunge will begin when foreign investors and countries no longer use the dollar as a reserve currency.

Sorry, but as we speak we are on the road to failure.

I lived down the road at the time the steel mill in Buffalo was closed. All the mills in Ohio and Indiana were also closed down, for a simple reason. Cheap energy allowed large gross weights to be transported so cheaply it was possible to offset the higher cost of labor in the US by importing that commodity. Since then the market penetration for TV's, computers, and most other products have become 90% or better and they have all become importable commodities.

During the last decade we were told the US would be making its living off the creation and sale of securities. There is not much else we do. Well. Think again. Would you trust a US security now?

During the golden years we made our livings and bought our food by inventing new products and new technologies. You have a short time to make good wages and profits up to the time when something becomes a commodity. You have to stay ahead of the power curve.

We no longer invest. We are now so far behind the curve we are going to be importing new technologies. Solar power. High speed rail. You name it.

Better get some land appropriate for growing bananas and vote for your local tyrant.

That is the future.

OK, let's get back to the discussion. Why did US Steel close the Buffalo plant. Why did US steelmakers, in general close so many plants?

I am the one splitting from the discussion? Looks like you are doing so? Which question did you pose which I evaded?

The topic is the press conference and "taking his wife to dinner" which you appear to have made up, and have not responded to.....and the other charge that you made, which was that he left a cabinet meeting to watch ESPN, which you've also not supported or responded to.

When challenged on your loose charges, you just change topics, repeat charges, or act offended that others are too emotional to deal with. Is it any wonder that people want to kick you off these forums?

"Where am I not being logical in all of this?"

You are playing the part of the propagandist. You state something as an absolute fact, such as the topic of this thread (you state it as a question, to give yourself plausable deniability, but if you actually read your post, it is not a question, it is a fact.) In reality, the premise is wrong. He did not leave the press conference to take his wife to dinner. How do I know that? Because, in the YouTube link posted, he actually stated where he was going. You missed it. When I've asked you for corroboration, you've given none. Instead, you've stated:

I stated my position which is that said behavior was inappropriate; ....... it seems we have pretty much finished with that topic.

What you've done is you've created an impression of misbehavior that never happened.

Now we come to the ESPN issue. You state:

As for the leaving meetings to go watch ESPN, I have found a number of websites which allude to it but none definitive enough that I wish to post a link. That "accusation" remains nebulous at this point. It could be true it could not be true - I am leaning toward that it is so. No doubt you are leaning toward that it is not so. Absent someone in the know willing to definitively spill the beans, we can't say for sure.

In other words, there is an accusation that is just standing out there, with no evidence or witnesses or ANYTHING to stand behind it. And yet, you have repeated in posts, at least 10 times, as a fact, that he did take that action. This is libel. Why you would defame someone is puzzling.

The fact that this is a pattern speaks to something darker than someone being misguided. I could understand a person getting misinformation and passing it on, but this smacks of something different.

This feels deliberate.

This feels like Lee Atw#ter. This feels like a smear campaign designed to pull down an honorable person, so that your less honorable hero, Palin, looks better by comparison.

I just remember that you belong to the group that smeared the reputation of John McCain to the benefit of GWB with lies, when that was convenient to win an election, using the same tactics. We know what you guys are like.

PS Ken, as far as me being a propagandist (I assume you mean a paid individual for said purpose) your instincts are just about as accurate as when you said I hated all Muslims including my Muslim patients (who preferentially seek me out, for whatever reason). Might I respectfully suggest that you not give up your day job. Your "instincts" leave just a tad bit to me desired. First I am a bigot and hater of Muslims, now I am a "propagandist." I can hardly wait to hear what your next conclusion will be. For someone smart enough to be a physician (I believe that is what you are) you truly baffle me. What will be your next conclusion arrived at by said critical thinking.

I think the last thing that I'll waste my time with, is to say that your assumptions are your downfall.

Whether you actually are a bigot, I'll never know. Do you write prose that is bigoted, against muslims, there are so many examples as to drown an elephant. Hate is your word. But you sure don't give them a break. Do you write words that exist only to provoke and cause anguish, beyond question.

Paid, not a chance. I've worked with paid propagandists, you don't have the skill. You're just a simple liar.

Good points, Lois.

You make a nice distinction between people who are deal with only issues
and are, as you say, much more difficult to deal with because you have to
on the top of your game. I presume you mean that YOU have to know a lot
actually about the issue being discussed, and therefore this is hard to do.

On the other hand you point out those people who are much easier to "deal" with.
And that being those people who use insults and name calling.
Easier to deal with because you can respond in kind, not have
to think about an issue.

So Lois, which of the two above kinds of people you have laid out do YOU

What you see as mere "bantering", Lois, I see as words to express ideas and thoughts about the world as we see it and how we would like to see it. The fact that you characterize it as "unimportant" goes a long way towards explaining why you write such crap. You don't care about what you're writing.

As much as I hate to push this thread back to the front page, but hey, it's like Jerry Springer, really dumb, but can't seem to stop watching. That's a bad thing!

Proposition:
Is Obama losing it? In the middle of a press conference to discuss important issues surrounding the tax cut legislation, Obama up and leaves????

Conclusion:
Frankly, I think their boy is losing it but, hey what to I know. Call me crazy Your Crazy but somehow skipping out like that - and for such a flimsy reason Citation, besides Youtube? - is weird Subjective Opinion even given who it (He) is.

Philosophy 101:
A straw man argument is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position.[1] To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by substituting it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

Addendum: Apparently LEB wasn't paying attention during the "Research Methods in Psychology" class. One must attribute their "Facts" with cited works. This is obviously not the case here. I don't think Youtube counts.

It was also an impromptu, hastily assembled, news conference. Clinton and Obama had a discussion and thought a talk from Clinton with reporters is an opportunity they should grab now.

LEB, do you know anyone else who is bitching about Obama leaving? Beck, Rush?

Should he have just stood there for 60 minutes?

LEB - well said.

I'll add that if the President had been doing his job and had a backbone that didn't bow down when it meets foreign leaders, maybe he could have stopped the Russians from delivering 1800 Russian stinger misslies to Venezuela!

The farc rebels will get them, next the drug cartels will
get some and then helicopters and planes will be shot down.
Maybe ours.

LEB - the Left's value system is just creepy.

The Left is bawling about how “we can’t afford” to give people “who
don’t need it” a tax break. This argument makes perfect sense, of course as
long as income re-distribution is a central tenet in your theology.

This still going on?

Throw in something cleverly made up to insult someone else.

Guarantees no in depth policy discussion, but instead more broad surface insults.

Makes for great entertainment for some.

Passes the time while working. No fun when no one responds.

So make up another insult, instant response. Ah, how we're talking again.
