Any recommendations for places to stay within a short drive of the park?
I'll be with the family, so accommodations a la vrbo would be best.
Also any recommendations for a must do hikes/scrambles that I could take a 4 year old on (who loves to climb) above the valley? I haven't been there in over 10 years and I've always gone to the valley, but would love to check out Tuolumne, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Jacek

Jacek,
We stayed at El Capitain View (http://vimeo.com/1134067); in Foresata once with family that wouldn't appreciate C4. I'd go back in a second in the right circumstances. The place was great, easy access, and very quiet - nowadays I don't mind paying to be able to get some sleep at night... I believe its owned by Chris Falkenstein. Great place and nice owners.

There's a cool hotel by El Portal. Nice with pool, restaurant etc.

I like Tuolumne. It is really kid friendly and usually less crowded. Stay at the Tioga Pass Resort when it opens. There are easy rock climbs for kiddos, nice hikes and Tenaya Lake (and others) for water fun.

Tioga Pass Resort (TPR) is a great family place. They have cabins, are 1 mile east of Tioga Pass and have a good modest priced restaurant. They may not yet be open for the season.
Family walks with a 4 year old? dozens.
Where to begin? Just look at a map and go.

Tuolumne is great for kids.
Take your 4 year old up the trail to the top of Lembert Dome. Then all the way around the backside to Dog Lake and back. Just be ready to carry him/her on your shoulders for a ways.
Walk in to the east side of Mt Conness from the Saddlebag Lake road. Or up to the lakes basin beyond Saddlebag Lake (and take the boat back for fun). Or Gaylor Lakes. Or Elizabeth Lake. Walk from TPR to Bennettville and to the lakes beyond. or....or....or.....
Reward the kids with an afternoon splashing and playing in the Lyell Fork at the Tuolumne Meadows campground.

You guys rock!
Thanks for all the info - keep it coming!
Unfortunately we are coming the first week of August (for a wedding).
Honestly, I'm a little worried about the crowds... we're coming from AK.
But I really want to get up into the alpine and still keep the family happy. I'm open to all suggestions - we'll be traveling from Santa Rosa.

Well, looks like everyone is all booked up - that's what I get for last minute shopping.
Tioga Pass Resort hasn't returned my email, so I imagine they're full as well.
Any other recommendations close to the park?

Don't give up. I showed up at Yosemite West for my reservation on Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend. The NPS Reservation line screwed up the reservation, and the check-in had no record of me. Apparently the reservation was unconfirmed, and they left me a message - which I never received!! The social network of folks there went into overdrive. I got a condo for one night, then over to a B&B (Don and Kay, merci beaucoup at Yosemite Peregrine Lodging). Yosemite West then had a cancellation for 5 days and put me right into it. We ended up short just the last day, and my husband booked a place outside the park in Mariposa. It was a pain to change rooms so often - all of our gear and food - but everyone was more than accommodating and allowed us to store our stuff until the next evening.

So I recommend Yosemite Pergrine Lodging http://www.yosemiteperegrine.com/- it is right next to the turn at Glacier Point. THe coyotes come every morning for breakfast, and the ravens feed there, too. Kids love the animals. Yosemite West is slighly cheaper, but doesn't quite have the same homey touch. We also stayed at the hotel just outside the park at El Portal last year with the clan, and that was quite acceptable, too. They had air conditioning, which you know is in short supply in the park. So if you don't want to rough it and don't want to pay astronomical prices, those are the most reasonable options closer to the middle.

We saved tons of money by flying into Sacramento and buying all of our food at Costco in Manteca on the way in. Check all the airports - the flight prices can vary a lot, but the drive is still 3 - 4 hours.

Getting last minute lodging can be tough. Some clients even wind up staying with me to be fellow low lifes.

The climber owned recommendations above are great, Cashner, Chris Falkenstein and others.

It's also possible to rent a cabin in wawona and cook for yourself and go in with a bunch of other climbers, see

Just outside the south gate is the Tenaya Lodge.

Here's a portal for a bunch of El Portal hotels with loads of rooms

Just some ideas if you get stuck

Not necessarily!
You may not hear back from them until they get the lodge open. They're likely up there working their buns off to get it open. May not have internet service up there yet. They're not a High Tech operation.
email them again in a few days.

I'm heading up to Tuolumne this week around the 15th and need to camp. Anyone been camping up there? Looks like most campgrounds are closed. But I will be sleeping in my truck if that opens any options. Thanks!
