Dean,

you're missing out on the good ice ! If you like I'll give you a ride in
the SS Minow....for a three hour cruise

Climbed the rightmost line on Horsetail this morning. Hollow with rushing water underneath in places. Never was I so happy to see a bolt anchor =:-O Great views !

Similar story at the roadside ice -- much fatter when we were there in Jan. Thin / mixed topouts, funky ice, running water. Good to see my bail sling is getting some use :)

Climbed the Bard-Harrington on Saturday. Some friends climbed it twice. Do not forget rock gear. Best ice is on the left side. Lots of thin / hollow stuff on the right.

Main Wall was in pretty good shape -- climbed Spiral Staircase on Sunday and then some variation of Heel-Toe (w/ramp start). Seemed to be a good bit of traffic on the lines in between.

The SMG ice report seemed to cover it pretty well -

Looks like warm weather in store for the weekend though..

June Lake is the uberschnitten place to ski when Mammoth is all blown out by the storm and they won't open the lifts.

Just a hint, that I learned by pure accident, pulling some great people out of a Mammoth drift after a wonderful snowstorm . . . .

We saw this on the approach, just before the final scramble up to Horsetail -

Is this Tatum Falls ?

I was hoping to head up for some ice this weekend before the season ends. Could Cragman or any other local please comment on conditions since the weather's warmed up over the last couple of days.

Also, I've only climbed at Lee Vining once, so I have a couple of rookie questions for those with patience:

0/ is the approach to June Lake just "drive the June Lake loop and keep your eyes peeled"?

1/ are the climbs at June Lake south facing (ie am I better off at LV in warm weather)?

2/ are the climbs at June Lake top-ropable (ie is there some way to scramble to the top)?

3/ re: central section at LV and June Lake: is it possible to toprope solo with a single fixed 60 or do I need two ropes?

Thanks.

Another question: after it dumps, are there issues with access on either the June Lake loop road or the road up to the Lee Vining ice climbing area? Thanks.

Hey Flanders, how'd the Olympics go? Sorry I missed it, but I was off playing in sand. Supposed to be for Brea's 30th, but they bailed on account of the wind and cold.

Olympics were a bust as Friday afternoon we got that wet snow that made the ice
un-skateable. We have moved the Games to Sunday at 4pm although the surface is
still in poor shape.

olympics were great tonight, a good turnout, good conditions, the curling seemed to be
the favorite sport. A good success here in June Lake, with such good ice conditions.

yippee,

Pics coming soon. As I said the Curling was the favorite event. It was quite magical being out
on Gull Lake with a beautiful night sky, and tiki torches lining the sides of the Curling Lane
