Great. Was up there Sunday 21st. I did not hit the roadside ice...but it looks the best that I have ever seen it in 8years. Horseshoe was good and classic.....love too see water behind the ice...Tatum looked ok.

Rob, here's a better shot. It's all about ice at this time of the year.
Even on the local lake, Gull Lake. We've been plowing the snow off
the lake ice to create an ice skating rink. The bartender at the Tiger Bar
just requested a curling lane as well.

And some locals are concerned about walking/skating on the lake here, say what !

is there a few bucks to be made on the pool ? Count me IN (so to speak)
I was just out at the Friendly Gopher Ice Rink (8:30 pm) playing hockey by moon light, listening
to the classical station on my truck park out there. Good stuff here on the eastside.

Also, ice related, was in LVC yesterday. We snow shoed in and as we came around the corner,
I just about shat myself, the Bard Harrington was in. We adjusted plans, and climbed
Hob Nail Boots, super duper ! Then over to the Main Wall ; we did Heel Toe, also in great shape, then Spiral Staircase.
Here is the link to the online topo. Brian Biega has done a good job on this.

it's all about ice here.

Climbed the rightmost line on Horsetail this morning. Hollow with rushing water underneath in places. Never was I so happy to see a bolt anchor =:-O Great views !

Similar story at the roadside ice -- much fatter when we were there in Jan. Thin / mixed topouts, funky ice, running water. Good to see my bail sling is getting some use :)

Climbed the Bard-Harrington on Saturday. Some friends climbed it twice. Do not forget rock gear. Best ice is on the left side. Lots of thin / hollow stuff on the right.

Main Wall was in pretty good shape -- climbed Spiral Staircase on Sunday and then some variation of Heel-Toe (w/ramp start). Seemed to be a good bit of traffic on the lines in between.

The SMG ice report seemed to cover it pretty well -

Looks like warm weather in store for the weekend though..

June Lake is the uberschnitten place to ski when Mammoth is all blown out by the storm and they won't open the lifts.

Just a hint, that I learned by pure accident, pulling some great people out of a Mammoth drift after a wonderful snowstorm . . . .

I was hoping to head up for some ice this weekend before the season ends. Could Cragman or any other local please comment on conditions since the weather's warmed up over the last couple of days.

Also, I've only climbed at Lee Vining once, so I have a couple of rookie questions for those with patience:

0/ is the approach to June Lake just "drive the June Lake loop and keep your eyes peeled"?

1/ are the climbs at June Lake south facing (ie am I better off at LV in warm weather)?

2/ are the climbs at June Lake top-ropable (ie is there some way to scramble to the top)?

3/ re: central section at LV and June Lake: is it possible to toprope solo with a single fixed 60 or do I need two ropes?

Thanks.

Another question: after it dumps, are there issues with access on either the June Lake loop road or the road up to the Lee Vining ice climbing area? Thanks.

Hey Flanders, how'd the Olympics go? Sorry I missed it, but I was off playing in sand. Supposed to be for Brea's 30th, but they bailed on account of the wind and cold.

Olympics were a bust as Friday afternoon we got that wet snow that made the ice
un-skateable. We have moved the Games to Sunday at 4pm although the surface is
still in poor shape.

olympics were great tonight, a good turnout, good conditions, the curling seemed to be
the favorite sport. A good success here in June Lake, with such good ice conditions.

I plan on going up for the opener this weekend.

How is silver lake campground looking right now?

I know it is supposed to snow for the next 2 days as well. If it is too snowed in we might go down to Bishop instead. Let me know....thanks!

I drove by the Silver Lake campground the other day, and it was still buried!!!! Silver Lake was still 100% frozen as was Grant Lake. I've never seen this before. June and Gull are being opened up by the marinas running their boats out there to stir up the water.

in
Zippo's , in shape as we walked by in the AM, gone by 4 PM

we went to climb at the Private Property Cliff, great temps, and views,

the ramp is "PhotoShop", and yes it ought to be in this season, or so I heard recently
