Yes, Wayno, I remember Dave yelling something unflattering at the Slimey Lymies. What was it exactly? Maybe you can remember his exact phrasing? It was something awfully appropriate and no doubt enraging. Oh, yes, something about them having nothing but dinky little crags over there.

A chance encounter with one of climbing's Greats this past weekend in Tuolumne.

This was our first time on Tuolumne granite; polished and crystalized rock. We'd seen a video of two guys that had spent a year preparing for that route and then accomplished it as lifetime achievement! Since I'm an old guy and Ben is a young guy starting out his climbing "career," he is a climbing instructor and lead climber, I told Ben that he's still got a shot at it! We both got a chuckle and marvelled once again at the guts and mental fortitude of guys that did a first ascent like that. Feeling the polished granite of Tuolumne for the first time ... we were both awestruck ... and this was on some "easy" top ropes on Pothole Dome.

So as the morning ended, we decided to head over toward Tenaya Lake for some bouldering ... East or West depending on the parking situation. As it would turn out, we ended up on the East side. Ben had spotted someone boulding just off the road on the right so we ended up looking at the Supertopo and heading up there.

Ben and I happened upon a lone boulderer at the Eastern end of Tenaya Lake on Saturday. Earlier in the day we were talking about how we appreciated and marvelled at the accomplishments of guys like David Yerian and John Bachar and what they'd put up in years past.

We struck up a friendly conversation with really cool dude who kindly asked if he could use our bouldering pad for route he'd wanted to finish up for the day. We could see immediately that this was no ordinary climber. We took up spotter positions and watched awestruck. Long, lean and graceful ... a few strong quick and thoughtful moves and he was up and over.

He introduced himself as Dave and we started talking about some of the famous climbs in the immediate area; most prominently the Bachar / Yerian route that Ben and I were discussing earlier that morning ... and somewhere along the line, I glanced over to Ben and we were both thinking ... could this be the David Yerian ? Indeed it was he!

We had a long and enjoyable chat about climbing, his latest projects, (some really neat stuff) and common friends (it turns out he worked as a route setter at my local climbing gym in Sacramento), and he shared with us some poignant stories about his friends John Bachar and a special story about Tobin Sorenson. After meeting him, I could see a true professional athlete, a true "Great" as my dad used to say, and a true gentleman.

I treasure this meeting with David Yerian and I'm glad that Ben, a college student has this to remember and take back with him to Idaho. Not to brag about but to cherish because that's what meeting David Yerian is ... a meeting with a great man, a living legend, a truly genuine human being.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave in Tuolune Meadows on many occasions in my early 20's. Always friendly, always approachable and always with a good story. Thanks for helping make my young Yosemite dreams come true, Dave.

No not at all, never even been on it. I'm just curious if he ever went up after following it and did the lead, that's all.
