Never knew him well BITD.
But I do remember that every interaction I ever had with him was pleasant.
He never came across with big ego or attitude.
Something I've always appreciated in many good climbers.
(But not all of them obviously.)
Way to go Dave!

Dave is probably the funniest guy I know. We have had many good laughs over the years and shed a few tears also. Dave often falls into this really funny woman's voice full of sarcasm and angst. It' usually precedes a good gut laugh for any present. The last time I saw him, after drinking and carrying on all day he told me that the voice was his Mother. I was touched. I know how much Dave's mom meant to him, because his father was a complete as#@&%e. Life has not been really easy for Dave lately, but he never asks for anything but some good companionship and some kind words, and maybe some beers or the odd toke. Anything for you, my brother. Peace, in all you do.

Dave is a good man, and I have always enjoyed running into him
in the Valley or Tuolumne. He cracks me up. One day Higgins and I
were having breakfast in Tuolumne at that little coffee shop/store
just down the east side a bit, and here comes Dave, full of life,
full of energy, joined right in with us as though we were all brothers...

Back some many years ago, at the end of a long day of climbing in the Meadows, I somehow left my fully loaded pack with a full rack, camera, and a rope at the side of the road, and drove off back to the Bay area. I pretty much just assumed it was all gone for good, but someone suggested I call the lost and found in the Valley just in case some angel had been good enough to turn it all in. Believe it or not, someone - Dave Yerian, they told me - had turned it in, and I recovered it all the following weekend.
That's a person with a good heart.

Stories? About David?
Use to hang out with him at his mom's place in Sonora in the mid-1970s. If I recall, her name was Vera, but not 100% sure about that because she was Mrs Yerian to me, and it was some time ago. They had a flat/apartment in Sonora at the time. I use to go there for a cup of java or so.
I've got a couple of stories about Dave, one or two I have already told on this forum in the past. Yeah, he's a good guy, better than some climbers I've climbed with and/or come across. Good bicyclist too.
I hope that he is doing well, he's a sound man. Best wishes to him, whether we ever meet up again, only time will tell.

Hey Skitz-
The City boys all remember good things about ya'.
I remember coming back from doing The Hobbit Book sometime in the late 70's and shaking my head about the run out pitch. I remember you laughing and saying to me, "if you fell off that pitch, you deserved to die". True enough

Dave is a great, guy; funny, superb climber, and all that, but hearing his speech at the Bachar Memorial was a life changer. Never have I heard one of my contemporaries, come off in public as profound, and ungaurded, as that. Like Ghandi, Malcom X or Bob Marley or something.

Dave is one of my all time favorite bro's, stayed with him a month ago, and he insisted that I take some of his holy items from Bachars basement. Now I proudly use my new/old classic Boreal pack at all the ski races, and I am psyched to boulder in some classic ninja's when the rocks reappear from under the snow.
Dave is the best for sure...

Love the guy. He's a really good friend of my downhill skate friend Patrick, and that's how I met him. When I was living/working in the meadows, Patrick comes running up with Dave. We hung out for a few days and then said our goodbyes. As luck would have it, I run into him at Indian/Mortar rock in Berkeley shortly after moving there. I've climbed/hung out with him a number of times, and I'm always inspired by him. He is SUCH a smooth climber. And a really great guy. Miss you Dave, maybe I'll run into you soon!

Peter - can't remember how it came up but your name came up this weekend and he had nothing but nice things to say about you.
Then again, he had nice things to say on most topics of conversation. That's one of the things that stood out was his immense positivity. Makes for a really awesome person to be around.
He's what my friend Jen would call a "positron." Positive people attract positive folks and vibes right back.

Someone ought to give the lad a computer; he doesn't have one but should. He is the Mother Teresa of our art. His mission is clear to him now and a computer along with online access would help. Dave Yerian is approaching sainthood as far as I am concerned. When he calls, I have to get ready, breathe deep and then pickup as it will be at least 45 minutes and we will both be in tears off and on through the whole conversation. I don't have these kind of calls with anybody else; no one cares like Dave.

Hi from Colorado to David!
Glacier Point Apron, 1975, Coonyard maybe. We got in a bit over our heads. David was trying to down-climb some really hard moves back to a distant bolt. That was one of the few times I actually belayed a leader who just turn around, sat down, and rode out a nice slide. I was busy reeling in rope AFAP, but I still remember both the look on his face and blond freak-flag flyin' in the breeze as he accelerated.
I mentioned this to JB last March. John was a little surprised. He told me David is usually pretty cautious.

Peter, I'm right there with you. Dave needs a computer. I have talked many times to him about the subject but I think he is a little reluctant. Dave is great one on one when you can look him in the eye and even on the phone when you can hear the vibe in his voice, but I think he thinks that the supertopo thing is not his most comfortable way to communicate. You can see that, you know him. He is good with the fact that his real friends will say the right thing. Personally, I wish I was wrong as Dave would be a great contribution to this site.

I went to high-school with Dave...he's the real deal. Genuinely kind, humble and always stoked with good vibes. After going through his bike accident on Old Preist's Grade, he came back strong. Most folks would have probably hung up the bike and the climbing shoes after that.

Like many I never officially MET DY but have stood in his presence. It was clear then and is even more so after reading this that this man is golden. Having recently lost my mother (very, very painful) I can 100% understand where DY comes from in that regard. (With the exception that my dad is, at 91, and always was golden.)

I met Dave in the Ditch shortly after his bike wreck. I was stumbling out of camp 4 one morning, headed for some coffee like fluid, when some guy lying in the dirt yells "Hey come give me a hand". I walked over and this scarred up guy is trying to put his back brace on in the dirt. I helped him put his exoskeleton on and we have been friends since.
I can't find the pic anymore, but years ago Dave and I did lots of biking together. It was before the invention of power bars and Dave didn't own a jersey so he taped a bunch of bannanas to every angle of his Colnago frame for a 200 mile plus dayride.
The guy is still a monster. Still riding and climbing as hard as ever.

Still on his old Colnago road bike. We rode the Arastadero outback to Old La Honda, followed the spine of the Skyline south and then came tearing back down Page Mill Rd to Moody back to the base. Same as always!

A chance encounter with one of climbing's Greats this past weekend in Tuolumne.
This was our first time on Tuolumne granite; polished and crystalized rock. We'd seen a video of two guys that had spent a year preparing for that route and then accomplished it as lifetime achievement! Since I'm an old guy and Ben is a young guy starting out his climbing "career," he is a climbing instructor and lead climber, I told Ben that he's still got a shot at it! We both got a chuckle and marvelled once again at the guts and mental fortitude of guys that did a first ascent like that. Feeling the polished granite of Tuolumne for the first time ... we were both awestruck ... and this was on some "easy" top ropes on Pothole Dome.
So as the morning ended, we decided to head over toward Tenaya Lake for some bouldering ... East or West depending on the parking situation. As it would turn out, we ended up on the East side. Ben had spotted someone boulding just off the road on the right so we ended up looking at the Supertopo and heading up there.
Ben and I happened upon a lone boulderer at the Eastern end of Tenaya Lake on Saturday. Earlier in the day we were talking about how we appreciated and marvelled at the accomplishments of guys like David Yerian and John Bachar and what they'd put up in years past.
We struck up a friendly conversation with really cool dude who kindly asked if he could use our bouldering pad for route he'd wanted to finish up for the day. We could see immediately that this was no ordinary climber. We took up spotter positions and watched awestruck. Long, lean and graceful ... a few strong quick and thoughtful moves and he was up and over.
He introduced himself as Dave and we started talking about some of the famous climbs in the immediate area; most prominently the Bachar / Yerian route that Ben and I were discussing earlier that morning ... and somewhere along the line, I glanced over to Ben and we were both thinking ... could this be the David Yerian ? Indeed it was he!
We had a long and enjoyable chat about climbing, his latest projects, (some really neat stuff) and common friends (it turns out he worked as a route setter at my local climbing gym in Sacramento), and he shared with us some poignant stories about his friends John Bachar and a special story about Tobin Sorenson. After meeting him, I could see a true professional athlete, a true "Great" as my dad used to say, and a true gentleman.
I treasure this meeting with David Yerian and I'm glad that Ben, a college student has this to remember and take back with him to Idaho. Not to brag about but to cherish because that's what meeting David Yerian is ... a meeting with a great man, a living legend, a truly genuine human being.

Tell him George Z. is looking for him.
TIA,

I had the pleasure of doing the motel room hang with Dave and Wayno at the Oakdale Festival. Fun to chew the fat and swap stories with the Centurian!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave in Tuolune Meadows on many occasions in my early 20's. Always friendly, always approachable and always with a good story. Thanks for helping make my young Yosemite dreams come true, Dave.

I think Dave might be recovering from a medical procedure now or soon. Let's send him some healing thoughts. Again.
Heal up bro, we have an appointment in Squamish. Your friends up there want to see you.

What a beautiful tribute this has been, and I totally agree with it. When you are lauded as a great person as well as a climber, you've lived a good life. Way to go, Dave!
