There will be a Bridwellfest on Sat. April 24th, in Joshua Tree California, at the Gordon Ranch . The Bridwellfest is a fundraiser to help the Bridwell family meet their financial obligations, and make sure their future is a happy, healthy , and secure one. Our goal is to raise $10,000, which I believe is a realistic and obtainable goal. The Bridwellfest will have a Jim Bridwell presentation (slideshow and/or DVD), live music by the California Celts (Reggae/ska), an awesome sushi bar, almost any or all of Jim's climbing gear for sale or auction, booze, merriment, and I would imagine the support of climbers throughout the world. This is an evening of friends, fans, and supporters of Jim Bridwell, the father of modern Yosemite Big Wall climbing, and North American's premier Alpine Master. There is no charge for this event, other than you need to buy at least one piece of climbing history from Jim from his collection of climbing gear. If you are on a budget, there will be many items under $5....so if you are a poor dirtbag, you are welcome. If you are a high roller, invester, collector, or philanthropist, please feel free to throw it down and help us reach our goal of $10,000. I also encourage those who wish to attend, to really make an evening of this event...(meaning don't plan on staying an hour or two, and then hittin' the Motel 6 for a "good night's sleep"). This is to be an "old school" evening in the style that is fitting for Jim Bridwell;....beers, friends, real partying, and a late night......if you can't commit to this, maybe this isn't an event for you.
Here is how I plan to raise $10,000 for a man who has giving and shared with so many and inspired almost anyone who has ever tied into a rope.
We have already made a fair amount of money so far selling off some of Jim's gear, which is already water off a duck's back. The starting date is Feb. 1st, and the end date is April 24th to raise the $10,000. I will be mailing out a letter to climbing companies, the climbing industry, and the climbing community to chip in and help us reach out goal;....while the climbing industry doesn't really owe Jim anything other than admiration and respect, I believe that climbing is where it is today because of Jim and people like Jim who have inspired us to great things just by the fact that Jim has opened up the doors to all the possibilities that we as climbers have, if we just summons up the sac, the mental toughness, and the desire to push our limits, take a chance, throw it down, and give it our best shot. Look at our climbing heroes;....such as Bridwell, Kor, Fred Beckey, Tucker Tech, Kurt Smith, Jimmy Dunn, Kyle Copeland, etc.....not what you would call high rolling multi-millionaires ...yet they are "rock" stars in their own right,...at least to us anyways.....In these trying times, we have to all work together to help each other out. I am psyched and proud to be hosting this event, and I have confidence that the climbing community can come together on this one, step up to the plate to bat for Jim, or hell;...at least show up at the party and have a beer or three.
How can you help out?
1) Attend this event and buy something from Jim for your collection of climbing goodies;...this will help out alot.
2) If you can't attend , but would like to help us reach our goal, please send a check made out to Jim Bridwell and send it c/o Todd Gordon P.O. Box 138 Joshua Tree, California 92252 or use paypal too at andreatoddgordon@gmail.com and we will make sure Jim gets the dough.
3) If you are in the climbing industry, encourage your company to help out and make a donation.
4) If you would like to donate anything to sell or auction off at the Bridwellfest, please send it to Todd Gordon P.O. Box 138 Joshua Tree, California 92252 call or email me with your idea, item you wish to donate, and idea to help reach our $10,000 goal.
5) If you manufacture any climbing gear, clothes, books, etc. that can be sold, auctioned, or raffled off to help us reach our goal, please help us out in this reguard.
6) Any other ideas to help raise money and reach our goal, please let me know.

All in all, it should be an awesome evening, not to be missed, and one that we, as climbers, should be proud of and support as a community. As special thanks to those of you who have already helped the Bridwells out financially ;...you guys RULE! And a special hats off to those who are true dirtbags who are living the life and too poor to even own a car;....I say BRAVO to you;....you deserve a fundraiser too! This event is not going to be a slick, mega-planned out event;...I intent to keep it simple as possible. Basically show up, have fun, party down, support Jim, and don't drive if you have been drinking. I will be posting a running tab of our progress in the money raised, those who are helping out, and it would be good to get a guest list of those who plan to attend, just like the supertopo Woodson list;...just to see all of our friends who plan to attend. I look at this whole evening as a win-win gig......we all benefit from such an event. Roy's benefit party last year here was an awesome event, a gas, and a great time had by all;....this will be a similar event. Keep checking this and other related posts for up-dates, information, ideas, and see you there. Jim is very appreciative and grateful to the climbing community and looks forward to seeing his pals, meeting new friends, saying thanks to you all for the support, and having an evening of it. Todd, you are awesome.

Jen turns 40 on 4/20 and at this point I am not sure if we will be in town that weekend. We will probably in the Bay Area to celebrate either the weekend before or that weekend.

Regardless, we will do what we can to help.

I'll do what I can to make her bday thing the weekend before. Would really love to be there...

As for the April 24th date;...I had originally planned for April 10th;...a date that Roy (Tarbuster, AKA Beadwagon) and I had hashed out months ago.....but the band was unavaliable this date;..they were already booked for this date;.....I even asked them if they would do a double gig that night, and they said yes if they could fit it in....but they could not...not enough time.....so I tried to push for this date, but could not. I know it won't work for some, and will for others....but it's the date I could get Jim and the band...and those are two that I need to be in attendence. Hopefully, Roy can revamp his schedule....for that was a day that he and I had hoped for..... I really pushed for that day, but couldn't swing it.....

I still can't believe that the weekend chosen is the one weekend this spring that I am unable to make it out there. I will be there in spirit, though.

This is shaping up to be the mother of all ST parties and is the perfect way to honor Jim, whose legacy spans the decades from the 60's to the present.

Todd, thanks for doing this. I will certainly send a check and urge everyone else to dig deep to do so. A climber of Jim's stature would be a national hero in Europe, able to live comfortably on his reputation. We can't change how our culture chooses its sports stars, but we who know the history of American climbing can show that we appreciate Jim's contribution by helping him out here.

Working towards our goal of $10,000 by April 24th, we are offering a big wall metal set, probably for collecting, but if you want to hammer these into the stone (their actual intended use...)...go for it. The set has 6 items.....one RURP, on Z pin, one baby angle, on fat LA, one standard angle, and one sawed off. 4 of the 6 are signed by Jim. I would like to get $100 , or higher is anyone is willing to chip in more (once again...). Today is Friday;...highest bid on Sunday night 10 PM is in ....(I will try to be prompt with the deadline). Your chance to help out the Bridwells, help us get closer to our goal, and to own a piece (actually pieces ) of climbing history. (I have 3 sets of these....this is set one)....With your help, the help of the climbing industry, we can reach our goal by April 24th. (You will be getting that tax return soon;...time to throw it down for The Bird)....and this would make a great Valentine's gift for your sweetheart.....nothing says " I love you " quite like some big wall iron.....thanks Todd Gordon

Todd Gordon respect to you, I'm not going to say my name here, (plenty of hints for people who know me), But I took a few showers and ate a few meals (cooked by Grant) at your place. We all contribute in our own way. For some that is simply being an inspiration to others....by chosing a unique path, not one dictated by a society with values many of us question...

Showing us all that there are alternatives, there are options....to how we live our life...if even for a short while....

flak is right!

What a deadbeat that Bird is!

And then there's that other guy out in Arizona, Layton-something, just sucking on the public teat, using medicare to relax in a dialysis clinic three times a week.

These people need to DO something.

Sheesh.
(anybody else know the etymology of the word FLAK?)

Actually I think Jim would make a terrific guest commentator on Fox, and I suggested to Flouride that she ask a few contacts, but she never answered back.
I think its about time that the mainstream had a name that they associate with american rockclimbing, and rumor has it that Jim has a few credentials in that regard,...

Several years ago there was a thread on ST by someone who claimed to be collecting stories for a full length biography of Jim. This was after Jim's book "Climbing Adventures--A Climber's Passion" had been published. It was a good thread, with all the old stories told again. Does anyone know what happened to the planned book? Was it just a troll? A complete bio would be an inspiring read, and it sounds as if Jim could use some royalties. H.

Thanks Todd for organizing this event. I will surely be there, will have to hire someone to run my Earth Day Booth, but well worth it.

Mike O’Donnell on Bridwell:

I was at a party last night and spent some time with Mike O'Donnell and John Sherman.
I hadn't seen Mike now for a handful of years; he was pretty distraught over Bridwell's situation, and had previously kicked in some financial support.

We spent some time catching up, ruminating over this whole fraternity thing that we all share which runs so deep.
Michael highlighted the strength of the memories and the simplicity of times and he told some terrifically animated stories.

After Mike had climbed the Pacific Ocean Wall, Bridwell approached him (they hadn't yet met)... "You put any mustaches on my Mona Lisa ???"

"You're talking about bolts..."
Mike went on to explain a particular spot were a flake was completely gone and yes he put in one bolt.
To which Bridwell responded dryly, but not without a certain warmness: "good for you, I would've done the same".

Mike's got so many great stories; Sherman and I told him to write them down.
I thought about this for a moment and said: "actually half of it is in the delivery".
Oral histories are great to capture whenever we can.

So much of life is fluid and the pearls are in the happening; much admiration, respect and thanks to the heroes such as The Bird, who inspire us to plunge for the goods.

Nice job on the T-shirt Simon: I love the art work.

I have a Bird story from when I was a wee 14 year old and I encountered Jim, Dale, Werner, Graham, Kauk, Largo and others in a group. However, I will save that for the Fest (I am trying hard to make it) in hopes of telling it in person.

Thanks Tarbuster!

Remember boys and girls, I am destroying the artwork after the Fest so there will be no shirts available after the date. It will absolutely be a collector's item! So far I have received orders from Spain, UK, Poland, and Japan as well as Canada and, of course, the US.

We are doing very will towards reaching our $10,000 goal;...thanks for all the help. If any of you have anything you would like to donate to the Bridwellfest for sale or auction....please sent to Todd Gordon P.O. 138 Joshua Tree, Ca. 92252 If you are a guidebook author and can donate a few of your masterpieces....please do. If you make anything cool, especially climbing related, and would like to share, and it's something that we could sell or auction off....that would be great. If you have some cool historic or awesome climbing goodies you wish to part with for sale or auction.....we would love it. Anything that doesn't get sold at Bridwellfest, we will sell afterwards on ebay or supertopo.....Lots of people have really stepped up to bat for Jim and his family;.....it's awesome...and I am sure, with the way things are going, that we will reach our goal. Most of all, try to attend;...if you can. I am looking forward to the Bridwellfest and seeing the climbing community join together once again...and to help a friend out who is in need. It's a win, win, win, situation the way I look at it.....and the Bridwellfest will be a gas. I am presently trying very hard to make the guest list include (hopefully) an equal representation of the climbing community.....(meaning more younger people and more females.....not just 50 year old gray-haired yuppie has-beens like myself and my generation..)....help me to really make this event a great event for the climbing world.....and not just a sausage-fest of alcoholic baby-boomers..............thanks, and as April 24th gets closer, make a date to attend, contribute, and party like the rock star that you are.

Todd (and friends), thanks for all the work. I hope to be there, but at the moment it's unsure.

It may help to post a list of things that are being auctioned, before the event, together with the minimum/suggested price. People then know what's available, and how much money to bring. It's also simpler if people collect their wins and pay on the spot, rather than by cheque or IOU.

I've listed the $ and stuff donated so far;....but Jim will have pretty much all his climbing gear for sale;...it's an amazing collection of historic and collectable and well as modern usuable gear, books, boots, clothing, inventions, and wild/wierd stuff;...this is how we will meet our goal....I'll try to post some of it as April 24th gets near...but it's alot of stuff;.....stuff that climbers will really enjoy, appreciate, and get wet over. Jim is pretty reasonable and fair with his prices too;...seems like everyone gets the "bro" deal....for all climbers are his "bros"....so yeah;....anything and everything from a half century of rad cutting edge climbing around the world...it will be quite a sight and a most awesome collection;...all for sale....and all prices negotiable;....just argue, bang it out, and barter with The Bird himself....and I'm sure you can get something cool to remember the day and event by....either something to collect or something to use on your next VI 5.12 R A5+ climb......and after you are done shopping at Bridwellmart.....get a gut full of suds, check out Jim's slideshow or dvd presentation, and then party your ass off to a super awesome band........see some of your old buddies, and meet new ones.....and then go climbing the next day on Sunday...all hung-over and wasted.....it's just slab climbing on low angle dummy domes;...so you will be alright....

Here is some of the stuff that will be for sale at close out prices...(if you want the Ranger;....he's extra.....)..this is just a small pile;....you will see....

(...and Joe;.....I want to see you there;.....and maybe we can't climb like we are 20 years old anymore...but we can still party and throw it down.......let's show these young local-hopefuls that us old folk are still alive, kicking, and getting up in your grill if you don't know how to party....)...

How about emailing me the exact address, and general times so I might find a reason to shoot down and say hello. Please don't make me read the whole thread. a tidbit for the forum.......if seeing Jim, ask him about memories of practicing our direct aid when in high school, on trees down at the creek bed, running time trials, competing, practicing getting length between pin placements while, collecting dues to come up with gas money to shoot over to Pinnacles or up to Yosemite to jump on the real deal. Good Times!! : )

So far everything is A-OK on my end.

We'll need to talk about funding for the fish. john is getting it from LA and I might also do a San Diego order. We'll need to pay for that somehow.

I already have most of the rest of the supplies. Maybe we can work a gear for rice/veggies exchange?

The good news is I'm getting a new (to me) truck this week so I'm fairly confident I'll make it (my current truck i worry a bit about).

As you might recall for Roy's event ya'll didn't have enough tables. You guys tried to nab one of mine but that wasn't gonna happen :-).

Also.... we should do more than just sushi. BBQ fish, steaks, etc.

So I guess I'll need to line up some help. Am also thinking it might be nice to have a second popup tent?

I can bbq....if you need me to with the fish and steak. Another easy suggestion is mojo de ajo.....shrimp with garlic, hmmmmmmm. Some tortillas and refried beans and we may be transported to Bahia de Los Angeles. Cheers

Want me to see if I can round up some lemons, limes and avocados ?

Nature-

I'll front the fish from LA. In the next couple weeks we will need to commit. The LA fish site seems pretty limited right now, but based on the potential size of this order I think we could get some special requests.

But we need to get this started.

Edit: all that said it is a logistical deal to make sure everyone comes up relatively flush and has a good feed. Maybe all on the current list can post up what they can afford and their fish or meat tendencies?

Edit: Edit: Todd, I've got the fish covered (not the FISH). No worries here. Just need to figure out the cost distribution when all is said and done.

If we can keep it all to this thread that might be good.

I'll put this out there to the crowd. Last year for Roy we broke even on the food. Part of the reason for that is because we put out a donation bin. Usually I ask for $30 for all you can eat. So the general guideline is if you want to eat sushi all day and night cough up $30. Or another way to think about it is "how much would this cost me at the sushi bar". And then toss in $100 to the donation bin :-).

Once we get close we'll start posting a long list of the fish items we'll have. Pun intended, the fish last year was off the hook.

The Grill is a great idea. Burgers, steaks, etc. Maybe do a couple huge salads. Bake some potato's.

figure we want to have food for everyone. I'd guess about 75% of the people attending will want sushi.

Another reason we broke even is that I did a lot more with fish than with rice. I'll change that up and do a big rice sushi salad with lots o' veggies, etc. The fish will flow so no problem there.

Went to the local restaurant tonight. Omakasa and some saki ran me around $60. For just me.

Whatever, it will all work out. Those that can front some $$ to Nature is all the better. I have faith that the Taco people will follow through.

I enjoy going to these places and sitting at the sushi bar and swapping times with the folks I end up sitting next to, who I've never met before.

Naw... I don't need any money fronted. I've got a lot of supplies already. If lafisco can come up with what they did last year i'll just need to do a small order form San Diego.

I wonder though... If anyone can find a 50lb bag of sushi rice in LA or San Diego for a good price that'd be sweet. We don't need that much but I do :-)

Edit: hmmm... though in a way it could help to have people commit with their wallets. If for no other reason to start to put together a head count. I'd hate to not have enough or too much fish. Though certainly too much is better than not enough. I just don't want to go through the logistics of dealing with the list, getting the money, etc.

I will help with dishes and clean up Sunday fo' sure.

Thinking of this logistically and trying to raise $ and not waste sushi I think we need to get a head count of who wants to pony up $30 bucks.

If we can get a general idea then the rule is that a minimum of 10-13 % won't show. It's true. I have put on many weddings and events. So we should be able to narrow down how much fish, meat etc. needed.

What about paper plates, utensils etc. I have some time and I can help yo all. Peace, Lynne

Edit: What kind of mega salads did you have in mind Nature. Sure we can assign some people to help with those.

I think last year if memory serves me correctly it was right around $500. I think we'll have more people at this event so maybe $700?

As far as the rice goes it doesn't matter as to the brand.

Any Organic California short grained (sushi) white rice will do. Gotta be organic....

yeah... back to gear and trying to get Jim a little more flush....

Lynne - yup, I agree on the head count. Though I'm not expecting everyone to cough up $30. If someone just wants a hand roll and coughs up $5 - that sorta thing - that also works. $30 is the all you can eat number. Salads - just standard green salads to go along with grilled whatever and potatos. These are just thoughts. As Donini pointed out this is all about what we're doing for Jim. But drunk people with no food in them isn't the best idea.

Double Edit: I have some plastic soy trays and sushi trays I think I'll bring. I don't have enough trays for the list that Todd posted.

Here is a teeny tiny microscopic bit of what Jim will have for sale;....probably about 1/10 of the stuff at the Bridwellfest;....but maybe this will help get a visual.....plus all the donated stuff, plus any stuff coming in.....if you are a gear head, gear freak, climbing historian, collector,....or just your common everyday plastic pulling Starbuck's drinkin' gym-flaggin' sporto.....there will be something for everyone and anyone......and all priced to move, and all prices up for barter with The Man himself;....Mr. Bridwell, sir....

Many of the pins are signed and for collectables;...many are not and are for banging on aid climbs, mud towers, or chipping holes and holds for 5.13 free climbers....all are real pitons which Jim banged in rock all over the planet...

Jim has a million stoppers....all are for sale, and most will be stamped J B..........use them at the crags, collect them, trade them, or just let them hang about in your garage with all your other stoppers because you don't climb anymore, or just sport climb or climb only at the gym....these are Jim' personal stoppers off his personal rack;....all will bring you good luck and magical placements at the crags...

Hey Nature, didn't you do a prepay thing at Roy's? Might want to consider that. Even though the guest list is growing, don't think everyone will be eating sushi. Just a thought. I'm bringing a bar b gue to do my own food and others will probably do their own food again. It could help you out if you did a prepay or "reservations" type thing so you don't bring in too much fishy stuff.

By the way, in regards to the question of taking money up front. I'm not sure I have time to manage that. So I'll take an educated guess on the fish to bring in. maybe keep it to a certain dollar amount and we'll go from there.

if john really can get a 50lb of sushi rice we'll be able to feed people. I'll also commit to getting some extra fish to take home and if it doesn't make it then that's cool.

As long as everyone remembers that:
1) we're trying to help Jim
2) no matter what you chip in you'll be paying a fraction of what the sushi would cost you at a sushi bar. And unless you are use to Belagio quality sushi chances are it's some of the best sushi you've ever had.

Advice needed as to potential travel plans. The general idea is to fly down for five or six days, never mind the ozone layer, the cost, and that it would be a lot cheaper to just mail a cheque. So as to attend the festivities, but also get in some exercise and fresh air.

Flights from Vancouver to Ontario (California) seem significantly cheaper than those to Palm Springs. On the map and according to MapQuest, it's about an hour drive (rental car) from Ontario to Palm Springs. Does flying to Ontario seem plausible? I don't know enough about traffic and roads in the area to judge if it makes sense. Advice as to travel plans welcome. Thanks!

Ontario is a much better choice (economically) than Palm Springs. Always cheaper on flight and rental car. Easy drive, especially if you land early enough to beat traffic. I almost always fly into Ontario and will do so this trip.

Another viable option, albeit with a bit nastier drive, is John Wayne/Orange County airport. Almost always cheaper than LAX and sometimes cheaper than Ontario, but you must deal with that LA burb traffic shite.

MH- I recommend Ontario airport. Traffic will suck no matter what, but it beats LAX or OC by light years. If it is Friday, try to get an earlier arrival rather than later. The earlier you can get out of the airport headed west on 10 to 62 the better.

Anders, I am pretty certain you head east on the 10 to the 62. It's the way I take also. It will be a blast to see you. :D Just got back from two stellar perfect weather climbing days at Josh. Got to climb with Terri, aka happigirl first time ever and it was fun. Also, Todd G., Tucker Tech, James Barnett aka F10, and Wendell. What a treat for me! We did a few newer routes on ( I believe it was )South Dome northeast face. The approach was the best bouldering lesson ever. Thanks to the above I learned even more.....and made it! Thanks guys from lynnie. :D

Edit: Thank you rlf and Tucker for the climbing lessons. I am learning, finally !!! When I say climbing lessons I don't mean climbing rock. I mean all it takes to make that happen. :D

People have been asking what to bring;.....bring yourself, your friends, your wallet to buy something of Jim's and for sushi if you so desire, beer, and your party spirit so you don't poop out early;.....it's embarrassing and light if you can't at least make it to midnight;....and please have a few beers, cut loose, and make a damn evening of it......I encourage everyone in attendance to make a pledge to at least TRY to party like you mean it...hang tough until the band does the last song;....if you can't do at least that for a MIMIMUM....then you are light and don't know how to party.......AND if you see this man without a beer in his hand;..make sure he gets one....or even two.....VERY IMPORTANT to beer this fellow.....so plan ahead and bring extra beer.....

Remember;...no drink and drive......
Also;....if you have something you wish to donate to the sale of things;....gear, books, art, whatever;....anything you wish to donate and we will put it up for sale to help out the Bridwell family......bring it, and we will put it up for sale with the $ going to Jim and his family...thanks......Todd......

Tucker Tech, getting the fire going for another fun evening. What an incredible Dude. Met Tucker first time ever when Gordo Mon took me on my first climb at Suicide summer of 2008. I was an idiot. Tucker, Todd and Tim kind and forgiving.

Climbed last with TT over this Easter. Difficult approach and descent. (the climb itself was a piece of cake except for one move I had trouble figuring out.) TT along with Gordo, Wendell and F10 made the approach\descent happen. I learned much. Peace and love to all you Dudes. I wouldn't have even done that when I was 20. Yo gave me confidence. The birdman stayed 3 nights at my place along with many others for the Woodson Reunion. Dude was probably one of the best guests I've ever had. I couldn't even tell he'd used the Master Suite. He cleaned up his dishes, did dishes. This is the man of rock, living with the rock for many years. But he is also a stellar gentleman.

Just gotta say this, so no one on the globe will get the wrong impression of this great guy and incredible part of climbing history. Lynne

If anyone would wish to bring something to add to the sale...any gear, collectables, artwork, photography, guidebooks, ...any cool stuff that you think we could sell at the Bridwellfest to help us reach our goal and to help out Jim, Peggy, and Layton...just bring it, give it to me, Jim, or Ron Gomez...and we will add it to the stuff.......and thanks for helping out......if it doesn't get sold at the Bridwellfest...I'll put it on ebay later....so it will all go to help out Jim and his family.........we have had a great response so far with lots of cool stuff from people and companies supporting this whole deal...it's been really cool;....THANK YOU!

sad to see captian... or skully, can't go now... :(

well, say, TODD:

i just sent a dream catcher to jim a few days ago...
it can go to him, as a keepsake...

or...

he can sell it, or you can sell it...
however he wants...
(they only run about 30 bucks for that size)
so it wouldn't bring much...

i thought he might like the memory of it, for a keepsake
as to this special time....

let me know, if for some reason it does not get there...
though, i am fairly certain that it should...

Who will be around on Saturday to help prep food? Let's get a list so we can communicate on what's needed and what we can each do to help out.

We need help all day long. I could use spot help at various times.

Todd - you probably already realize this but setting up in the same place I did last time would be ideal. Probably put the grills down there.

Lynne - you said you had a 10x10' pop up tent? is it an EZ-UP.

We'll need a few more tables.

I'd like to start coordinating how we'll deliver food to these masses.

Todd - is anyone setting up a wet bar again? Was it margarita's last time? IIRC correctly it closed down way too early. LOL!

nature, we'll do whatever we can to help but we're going climbing first, mmkay?

I was wondering about the bar...will it be beer and ritas or beer and sake?

We can pick up such supplies on the way in on Friday.

locker. sweet. We'll need a lot of it. I have a 3 gallon percolator I'm brining.

Mimi - great thanks!

I don't expect anyone to miss out on climbing and expect that late in the day I'll have a ton of people willing to help out. I'm hoping for one or two people who will be around most of the afternoon to help.

Late in the afternoon I'll need some help with the following:

make edamame
make miso
help set up so the masses can easily access the food

And dammit if I don't still need someone else to help roll!

I was wondering about the bar...will it be beer and ritas or beer and sake?

all of the above? I already have four bottles of sake (though I'll probably keep that at the sushi bar - at least the Sayuri :-)
Mimi

Apr 17, 2010 - 04:09pm PT
I'll do the miso and can help roll. I'll need a knife; knott bringing it on the plane.

What jug sake do you recommend? You know, the cheap stuff you have to heat. Gekkeikan isn't too bad and easy to find.
nature

if you are going to help roll then skip out on the Miso. It's so much easier to have one person per job.

I'll have knives - no problem there.

Gekkeikan - I think that's the stuff the Reverend Pagan Monkey Boy buys by the gallon. yup.. .that'll work. All the sake I have is unfiltered cold.

I am bringing a Large 3'X 6" wide by 8' long table. Do you need another table. I can probably get one or two of those standard 5 or 6 foot long fold up ones.

I don't know how to make what you mentioned but I learn fairly quickly and take orders well. :D

i just had to respect my dear dad, and not travel again, and look for work, somehow... i don't want him to think i am not honest, though the trip was a gift (and i've done job hunts)... and i did pay the gal back (for her gift of a trip to see my buddies) with the handmade gift (worth a lot, as due to that fact)---but a father wants to see more job-action and not more of the friendship endeavors in my life... :)

but one day, the good lord willing, all this work out, and i can visit you all...

What to bring;....Bring yourself, your pal(s), booze for yourself and Tucker Tech (be sure to beer him everytime you see him ), some $ to purchase anything Jim is selling that you might be interested in; both new and used gear (Either Jim's personal gear or gear donated by climbing companies or individuals, ....bring anything you would like to donate to the sale (any climbing gear, climbing books, art, t-shirt, services, or anything you make that you think we could sell to help us reach our goal).....any donation helps;....if you are here climbing;...just donate a piece of climbing gear;...and we will sell it (or try to sell it...)....bring an appitite for food (sushi and other),...I think it's $30 all you can eat, or $10 a plate....and try to commit to the midnight minimum so that you get full value out of this event....Be psyched and ready to party, throw it down for The Bird, pretend you are young when you aren't, stick it out, get up in your own grill, and see old friends and meet new ones........Dance , party, drink, eat, go climbing, buy climbing gear, donate, throw up, get laid, over-eat, tell a bunch of lies, hang with your homies, take pictures, flap, show off, help out the Bridwells, trash my house, own of piece of climbing history, eat dead animals from the ocean, have some barley and hops, drink some Wild Turkey, take shots of tequilla, wear your Bridwellfest t-shirt, buy something for your boss at work and your mother-in-law, give Tucker Tech a beer, meet local hillbillies, steal things from my kitchen (only if you have to), party with the band, sleep out under the stars, pee in my yard, see a Jim Bridwell slideshow, meet the Father of Yosemite Big Wall climbing and N. American's premier alpine master, have a smoke, met your future spouse, be obnoxious, be rowdy, be busy, have fun, get your groove on, and get down on your bad self.........that should take most of the evening...

T-SHIRT UPDATE...

The final lot of shirts comes off the press Wednesday morning. Tomorrow I will be writing those of you who have placed orders but not received shirts yet. I will give you the option of picking up your shirt at the event (makes sense if you are 100% sure going) or having it sent to the mailing address you indicated on the order. Look for those letters in your inbox Tuesday AM.

For those of you around the world that still haven't ordered your shirts... DO IT or it's crying time! The absolute deadline is MIDNIGHT ON THE LAST DAY OF APRIL. After that they are no more.

The Bird Book of Dreams (Yosemite Climber) that Roger Breedlove and I have been sending around for signatures will be at the event with Todd this weekend pending safe arrival from Hawai'i (care of Boo Dawg.) A fund-raising effort will commence sometime in July. Take a look as it gets shown around but PLEASE don't party foul or puke in it PLEASE. (Tucker spew will likely not add much historical value!)

On a side note, I'd like to see the book end up in Ken's museum but I'm not sure how many people would be willing to contribute to the Bird fund if they cannot own the book themselves. What does everyone think, donations versus auction? What yields the greatest benefit?

Can someone get some pics of the lucky Gory winners? I want send them to my friend (the editor) in Poland? Who knows, you might end up in the magazine! It worked for these folks!

Also, remember to get photos of people enjoying the shirts! I love to see happy people in my products!

The package left this morning as planned with one tiny hitch...

It seems Joshua Tree is considered way-out-there and even though I sent it Express Mail they only guarantee it for Saturday. It "MAY" get there on Friday morning but otherwise Todd will get it delivered to his house on Saturday.

Whooo Hooo! Out the door!

Its taking some effort to let go of the work, but the Bird was my main mentor and friend in the big wall and alpine world, and I am happy to do this drive to honor him!

Leaving Donner Summit right now, on my way, getting at least 3 hours of the drive done tonight, should be there with time for a couple of pitches tomorrow before the party.

If any cohort of craggers could handle me joining up for a few, post your destination here and I will find you! Should be pulling in to the park by 11:00am, ready to pull down!!

See Ya!

Does your Jeep have struts? Sounds like struts to me as I had this on our Nissan. Scary stuff. Scarier was me spending too many hours fixing them myself.Compressing those huge springs, even with the right tools, can be a bit shady.

Hope all are having fun!

I know the shirts got delivered to Todd on Friday so those of you who asked for delivery in J Tree should have them yesterday or today.

Just that more topo help makes life a little smoother. Peace, lynne

My only negative impression from the whole affair was the behavior in the sushi line.

Man, would of loved to have been there!!! But besides this mega ad design restructure for the local Embarcadero resort here in Newport that I'm working on, the head of our local travel magazine sent out a challenge to the local Graphic Artists in the area to revamp this Alaska Air ad to, as they said, "Liven it up." The first is what they sent to us few contenders, the second is a first draft that I whipped out in like a half hour...Being biased I feel that my idea has more "Pop," but the one that is selected awards the winner with the coveted creative service design position for their travel magazine...Keeping my fingers crossed as they produce 35 issues a year...:) Wish me luck, even though this is just commercial stuff and in no way reflects my actual art...

yeah, and the cool thing is a lot of camping going on,

you don't stress out at a party as much if you know you can just walk a few feet and flop.

because when those party lights come on, the party's over for me.

hey, i thought this was a slightly used rope i bought from the bird man but it's brand frickin new for a hundred bones, holy smokes!

hah! you know what Jim said when he sold me the rope, he said,

"yeah, and this ain't one of those pussy faggot sport ropes either."

i mean, sure, my climbing gear salesman is Jim Bridwell.

would you mind expanding on this comment? it seemed pretty civil to me from my perspective.

It was civil and darn polite and orderly, but there were a couple of folks that parked themselves at the periphery of the table munching down and then horning in again blocking the flow for everyone else. I guess you are always going to have one or two in every crowd. Everyone else was to polite to tell them to move on.

You were way to busy to notice. It was obvious from my perspective grillside.

You guys did a great job!

Lynne, Mimi and who was that that stepped in later to help? You all deserve a big,

THANK YOU!

That was an impossible amount of food to produce.

We need two grills and marinade next time.

It was great to talk with Jim and think of the timelessness of the things he accomplished and the ideals he stands for. To purchase one of his haulbags was an honor. I didn't realize there would be a slide show, when did he do that? Or did he do it? I had to go about 7:30.

I'm certain that jstan would be delighted if you took his mouse off his hands. In fact, he may have several. John may still be in Joshua Tree, working on his cottage and visiting with the neighbour - he seems to go for a week or two at a time, to make the trip worthwhile. This time he was working on the plumbing, plus trying to rodent-proof the outside of the cottage. They invaded, live in the walls, and can be fairly noisy at night.

The mouse may be a different species than those found in Seattle, but that seems a relatively minor concern.
