Cosmic, sorry if my reply was a little bit snarky. And without sitting at your computer I can't know your exact situation so I don't really know which website to direct you. But as Shack has said, it is not too late to recover what you have lost. If you want the pictures back, most of them are probably still there.

One tip I remember from my experience with this... whatever program you use to recover your files should have a search function so you can tell it which KIND of files you want to recover. Since you are trying to recover pictures, the search should be for .jpg, .png, .gif, etc... This will drastically reduce the amount of crap that it recovers, making it easier for you to find what you want.

" use DBAN to recover all my lost files,"

I checked out the Dban, Sprock.

From the link you posted, it looks like a nuke program rather than a recovery program.

:(

I sure wish I could find a freeware data recovery program

That's why I am looking for freeware data recovery software.

You are right. I did not defrag my external, so I am hoping
to find some freeware out there.

Any recommendations?

I was reinstalling windows xp and forgot I had my usb hard drive connected to the computer. When it flashed the partitions for some reason I thought it was the C partition and deleted it.

Was able to rebuild the fat and recover 20 years of photos.

Now I have 5 backups of the data.

That was totally disingenuous, how drunk Are you?

Dwayne, I really like your work, and i'm glad you got most of it back and hope the rest comes.

Locker, you're cracking me up, both with the most recent 'evil images' and the way you're handling this nonsense

Dude's "long winded"...

Yes, as if anybody is going to read it!
And, Rok, I've spoken up in your defense in the past
but you are taking this a leetle over the top.
Couple deep breaths now and repeat, "this is the internet,
nothing to see here, move along."

WOW!!!
I go away for a while and my thread takes on a ominious note.

Well, back on topic.

I found a program that someone from ST told me about.
It's called, restoration.
I ran it last night, ( that's why I wasn't online to see this thread turn for the worse) and I was able to recover a few of the pics that I had on the new computer and external drive. Alas, most of the files were corrupted, but I am happy to get back at least a few of the pics, so it's not a complete loss.

NEF=RAW, just a different name. gives you ability to adjust levels before opening the file entirely in an editing program.
