sort of OT, but this is too good to resist. some of you might remember donald nitchie -- he wrote this for me while i was drying out...

Letter to a Friend in Rehab

Do you think there's anything left in the baggie
we stashed under the log behind the soccer field
in 1982, before we went back to the party and you puked
in your Empire State Building costume?
It would be a shame to just leave it there
and since you won’t be needing it any time soon
I wonder if you remember which log—
behind the goal or off to the left?

Here it’s in the 50s, gray, and blowing hard—
a mirror image of ourselves.
Everything conspires to remind us.

I woke at dawn, wondering if you were up,
staring at the ceiling, “settling in,”
as if you'd moved to a new town
or taken a job you'll someday say you’ve learned to love.
I can picture your lanky frame, ankles
poking over the mattress as if trying to fit
into a life several sizes too small.

I remember you atop that California ledge
beating your chest and yelling, “Bring out your women!”
Or the time you drove for hours to the crags
only to discover you’d forgotten your weed.
You turned around and drove back home.

The good news is, you don’t have to give up your stories.
You can bring them to rehab
like binges that don’t end in jail, or the morgue.
They say they can help—
evidence you give against yourself
to salvage what time you have left.

For as all climbers know, you can't stay high forever.
And as you said, the hardest part
is always the descent: the footwork tricky,
handholds hard to find in the dark
and adrenaline, your old friend, no help at all.
Maybe these words can help you get back down.
Once we were insatiable, fearless as Vikings.
It’s someone else’s turn now.

Yeah?
Your physics professor?
The dude is solid, I know that much.

Speaking of North fork; the summer of '72 I had my 12th birthday in North fork. That was the place and time where I first heard tell of "strong dudes who climb rocks in Yosemite"...

Keep crankin' the moves, bvb. Wish you could have been there, but it sounds like priorities are/were being dealt with. Stick it, dude!

The "70' s Joshua Tree Crew Redux: 2008" reunion rocked and raged.

One of the only things missing (besides a Largo etc.) was Bob Van Belle. You guys were quite noticably missed by all.

Heal up real good and let's do some crankin' soon!
