maybe they can lease the visitor center to Clint Eastwood so he can create a film "campus" like Lucas Arts in the Presidio

I don't get it. Why this zeal to make everything a national parking lot?
an upgrade of Pinnacles to park status has enthusiastic support from local elected officials and businesses who hope that the national park cachet will draw tourists, especially the foreign kind, who now pass by unaware of the rock formations along U.S. Highway 101.
Europeans often plan vacations around national parks, but many have no idea what a national monument is.
"People come down there and say, 'Where's the statue?' "

It's job security for federal workers. They'll need to do development plans and "environmental impact" statements and studies. At least there will finally be places to eat pizza, buy groceries, picnic by the car and do laundry. Then you'll finally have climbing rangers too to help with the bolting issues that they will have to get everyone fired up over so they can deal with it.

Soledad could use a bump in eco-tourism, not that I really want to see it. I am amazed how little visited that park is, shame it would change.

I'm curious how there could be less camping than there is already. Also, since the NPS already manages the Monument, I, for one, don't see why we need this, but I also don't see how this really changes anything.

I'm pretty sure that JT would still be overcrowded even if it remained a National Monument.

My primary point J...
"don't see how this really changes anything"
So why fool around with a good thing... except to lay the ground work for later development years down the line when user days go up and the need for greater regulation becomes necessary.

Bah I love that park but fear "change" from it.

Thanks for the clarification, Munge. I agree with that reasoning. It continues to amaze me how uncrowded the High Peaks remain during what, to me, is prime season (late fall through early spring).
Oops! I guess I'd better keep my mouth shut.

You guys must be kidding on the "quiet and not crowded" thing. Last time I tried to climb in pinnacles, it was a total zoo.
