http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_21203476/bill-making-pinnacles-national-park-passes-house

Legislation to upgrade the Pinnacles National Monument to a national park passed the House of Representatives on a voice vote Tuesday.

The Pinnacles National Park Act, H.R. 3641, was introduced by Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, last year and co-sponsored by Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Atw#ter.

The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate.

Farr said the Pinnacles' 26,000 acres is "a rare California gem" with unique geology, cultural history, recreational opportunities and wildlife.

The Pinnacles, named a national monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt, would be the nation's 59th national park.

To attract Republican support, part of the bill to expand wilderness in the Pinnacles by 3,000 acres was dropped.

I remember when the John Muir Wilderness expanded under a republican president. I'm going to have to go back and look at the makeup of congress at the time.

Yeah, I don't mind expanded wilderness at Pinns, but Parks only bring loop roads, less parking, less camping, "projects" that don't necessarily support wildlife, habitat, or recreational activities.

apologies for thread jumpin

This just chaps my hide. Carmel rep is just jonesing for a Park so he can sell his little seaside town as the place to stay and go drive to the West Side, where there will be incremental changes over time that ruin the "wild" flavor that often can be felt on that side of the MONUMENT!

Would hate to see that. West side Pinns is truly an adventure. Somewhat off topic but is the 70's looking "It's happening in Soledad!" sign still up? It lent a lost in time vibe to the west side approach passing it in the late 90's / early aughts...

That place would be a lot prettier if they got rid of those giant turkey vultures

Solid of you Srbphoto. I know you posted up first on this. The lack of tools for organization on this forum is annoying sometimes.

I'm curious where the funding is going to come from.

Bullfrog: thanks, it was a tough decision to remove writing as eloquent and masterful from the internet forever.

Yeah. As far as upgrading the forum, no incentive there. Make the best of what you've got or band together and start something else.

Friends of Pinnacles(www.pinnacles.org) is trying to get some information from Park staff on just what this might mean in the long term.

For those of you who haven't been to the west side of the Pinnacles recently, the new visitor center, located in a much less ecologically-sensitive area, is now open. All the buildings located at the old parking area have been removed. This is a good trend that hopefully continues.

I don't get it. Why this zeal to make everything a national parking lot? I don't see that it would improve the place one iota. What it will do is swell the budget and give some fat bureaucrats more money. I think will lead to a degradation of pinnacles. Had many a good time there. Shame.
