Delta was a water-stop. It is further up-canyon than the present Lakehead on Shasta. It is where my grandmother lived with her father, Ed Miller, who was a brakeman for the SP, after her first husband died in the influenza epidemic of 1919.

There were untold numbers of fish caught by my family here and in the creeks feeding the Sacramento.

I learned to play several different poker games in Cayucos, summer of '61:
Baseball, High/Low, Monkey Love and Razz among them.

One hundred matchstick buy-in and Everett explained the rules in his mechanical voice as he dealt the cards to Mike and me.

We played cards nearly every evening for a couple of hours in a bungalow across Hwy 1 from the beach just south of Cayucos Pier. It was foggy most of the week.

Following our stay here, I accompanied the Livermore family over Carson Pass and down to Ebbets Pass and on to the West Walker for a week of rainy-day fishing and more cards and watching Jarheads from the winter training camp slide down a zip line.

From that picture zBrown posted, the place looks a lot more populated now, somehow, over fifty years later. That's a common phenomenon with nostalgia.

Who in heck was San Luis Obispo?

I'll let Wiki tell ya.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_of_Toulouse

Obispo is likely the family's name, but I dunno.

Leon's Used Bookstore in SLO was for years one of the very best in California, but closed around '08.

First and last place I ever ate shark was somewhere near Cayucos.

Apparently there is an abalone farm slightly north now.

There is a webpage, but what an abalone would need one for is beyond me.

hooblie, in his role of tour guide to the boondocks of Coconino County--
18,661.21 square miles*, the second-largest in area in the USA--
showed me what he knew of the local faunascape.

Like "this is j-p" and "that's gambrel oak, grows in a circle"
and I can't remember them all.

One stand-out was cliff rose.* 48,332.3 km2

No-see-ums, well not really and yes the traps do work.

Feral roosters are fickle. This boy is long gone, despite the free bread and water.

Did I Do That?

I visit here
From time to time
Sometimes more often
Than is kind
Returning mostly
For a rhyme
Sometimes way past
My suppertime

I'd like to say
If any care
I'm now less like
To take a dare
But when I do
Stand clear beware
I've lost more than
My strength or hair

But often as
I'm wont to do
I find more irksome
Than the flu
The memory of
What did ensue
I can't recall
Pray tell can you?

Now even worse
The hearings gone
As I do tend
To yammer on
What marbles I've
Left when I'm done
Should dissipate
To the beyond

I visit here
When times are good
Perhaps more often
Than I should
When times have tried
They often would
I'd linger longer
If I could

And a creek that rolls nearby
And a dog that won't even bark at a firefly

Musk Shark

One hungry day
Went for sushi
And ate some shark
'Fore he ate me
Then went to Mars
What did I see?
A Martian shark
Ate my pinky
