Anyone else besides me find it kind of ironic or hypocritical that the two front runners have no political experience? Considering how hard the GOP slammed Obama for not having enough experience.

John M, I'm with you. I think it is very ironic.

The Repugs have run for a long time that they are the choice, because of their experience, their background, their knowledge.

they sure ran that message when President Obama ran the first time.

And I wonder, whether that sentiment may underlie some sentiment in this election. John E has already declared himself for Hillary vs Trump---because she is actually qualified, and won't be crazy.

I suspect a lot of people will think that.....

How ironic that the young and idealistic contenders for next POTUS are republicans,
and the crusty old white status quo is on the democrat side. Just sayin.

I consider myself, normally Left leaning. But the Left, is so deluded now, it's difficult for me to support. You can see it upthread.

There's a train approaching. It will be kicked off by bond downgrades on Government debt worldwide. It won't necessarily hit this year or next, but when it does, the ferocity, will be mind bending. The US Government, will be paralyzed by finger pointing and be no help.

It won't announce that there is a "grace period" until the year 2020, like many of the laws the Government passes either. It will be like Robocop. Submit or get trampled. It will be fear driven, by people that aren't ready to "forgive" debt.

I'm still trying to decipher the last two posts. Would it help if I snorted some crack, too?
If I got Duffield right does he think that US bonds are going to default along with the rest of
the world's? BwaHaHaHaHa! Dood, we're NOT Greece, we're The House and we're still
the dealer no matter what you've been reading.

Jammy, we are substantially in agreement re The Donald. I just didn't get your referencing
Duffield's 'curious' post. Even The Donald gets that the US dollar and its bonds are still the
last bastion of financial safety and will continue to be for quite a while. IF and when China
puts its big boy financial panties on that may change but there is only token evidence of that
occurring.

The aftermath of the CNBC debate has been interesting. Full disclosure: I didn't watch the debate. While some of the debate questions seem ridiculous, others which candidates objected to were actually legitimate questions about their records.

In any event, the candidates are now overreacting. They have canceled their appearance on Telemundo and have asked for a more candy-assed debate structure. While canceling an appearance on Telemundo won't make a difference to trump, how do other republican candidates ever hope to expand their electorate beyond their declining white male base?

They are doing themselves no favors.

Edit: and meanwhile, democrats are negotiating with Telemundo to increase the number of democratic debates broadcasted on Telemundo to 2.

agreed.

I did watch at least 50 percent of the debate, ( world series was on ) and the debate moderators were pathetic. It was shouting matches and sneeringly asked questions. The tone was terrible. Sure some of the questions were legitimate, but the whole tenor of the thing was whack. Hardly any decorum. Those running had more decorum then the moderators. And thats a sad situation given whose running.

"how do other republican candidates ever hope to expand their electorate beyond their declining white male base?"

They obviously have little interest in doing so- the platform of virtually every Republican candidate in the last several elections has been dominated by bloviating blowhard white males whose primary goal seems to be to alienate as many women and minorities as possible.

Remember bluering's 'Restoring Conservatism' thread? He started it right after 2008 swept the Republicans out of so many offices, and sent them into the wilderness to try to find themselves again- there was much hand-wringing that the negativity that had been such a primary tool for the GOP should be abandoned, and was not part of their true identity.

Well, obviously they walked out of that wilderness with no such enlightenment. The GOP continues to embrace divisiveness, fear, misogyny, and xenophobia as their primary tools.

Exactly, apogee, and I remember that thread well.

To expand, they need to eschew many of their core "principles" that are fundamentally hostile to inclusion. They can't expand otherwise.

But of course, if they do that, then what would be left of the party? My guess would be a fragmented national Republican Party, which actually might now be in the early stages of fragmenting, if the House of Representatives and presidential campaigns are indications, resulting in two parties: the old Repiblican apparatus and an independent/right wing party less prone to compromise, led by trump or a trump ally. Both will be competing for votes.

Interesting to watch.
