The thread titled Flowers of Supertopo seems to have vanished.

It is "no longer available for reply."

That's just a shame.

A beautiful cheerful rebirth to the flowers.

Anita, by searching 'purple flower bush' I learn that the flowers you asked about are a type of budleja sometimes called butterfly bush. They smell like honey to me.

edit:

Anita! Did you know how funny that amputated bush would look, here? Why did you take that picture?

Anita, do you know why they call it a "moss rose"?

I have a Rugosa in my yard with flowers just like that one that are so fragrant. A couple years ago there was a ball of moss growing on one of the stems. Last year there were two or three. This year there are a dozen or so of these mossy clumps. My neighbor is a gardener and he has never seen such a thing.

Wayno: moss rose because the buds are covered in fuzz that looks like moss, I believe.
I have several rugosas as well. My grandmother used to make jam out of their petals. I have hardy roses as I'm too lazy to winterize hybrid teas but I caved in and got a hybrid tea as well as an old English rose this spring, so I better take care of them come November.

MH2: I photographed most of my garden this past spring to keep track of things, and because I had nothing better to do ;)

My delphinium is over 5 feet tall and should bloom soon. I'll post some more pics later.

Let's try Glacier Point instead.
I was leaning on the heavy-duty top guard railing at Glacier Point, pointing my camera down hill slightly. It felt as if the earth were moving. It was my heart beating its arrhythmic tempo. When I stopped leaning on the railing, the earth stopped moving and the image was stilled.

Very, very weird feeling, lemme tellya!

Where have most of the flowers gone?

To seed, of course.

Except in the Southern Hemisphere.

The donini plant, Alpinismus donini, has a unique trait of shedding its years in its high Rocky Mountains habitat and its shed seeds are carried south by migrating birds.

These seeds resist digestion and are eventually sown in greatest numbers in the higher regions of Patagonia, which seems like a very long ways to fly before taking a dump. But that's just my personal hygienic fetish commenting. YOU potential readers must be the judges for yourselves.

The quest to find the answers to a botanical mystery that had scientists going insane to try explain how it grew in both places in two different times of the year, in opposing cycles, is an adventure which you will never forget. (The section about tracing the various species of birds' differing migratory paths is especially riveting.)

Order your copy now, in advance, please. There will be an avalanche of subscriptions we are certain.

Fred Beckey & Wayne Merry both endorse the book, two thumbs up!

Send cash, check or money order to me, Mouse From Merced, here in Middle Earth, by return mail, and I'll keep your request on file. You will be mailed a chit for each copy. The books will be sent ASAP after the printers have done. Each copy will be personally autographed by donini.

There is no title yet, but think one up and mail it in with your cash, check or money order for only 39.95, shipping incl.. No tax, we got it covered like a Jack Tackle belay!

We may decide to have a drawing BY donini HIMSELF, the man who led the expedition to find the answer to the question, "Hey, WTF?"

Or not: This will depend on when donini returns from his LATEST HEROIC TRUE-LIFE ADVENTURE, kinda.

Official Catholic accounts state that on the morning of December 9, 1531, Juan Diego saw an apparition of a young girl at the Hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City. Speaking to him in Nahuatl, the girl asked that a church be built at that site in her honor; from her words, Juan Diego recognized the girl as the Virgin Mary. According to the account, Diego told his story to the Spanish Archbishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, who instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and ask the "lady" for a miraculous sign to prove her identity. The first sign was the Virgin healing Juan's uncle. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill. Although December was very late in the growing season for flowers to bloom, Juan Diego found Castilian roses, not native to Mexico, on the normally barren hilltop. The Virgin arranged these in his peasant cloak or tilma. When Juan Diego opened his cloak before Bishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and on the fabric was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.--straight from Wiki, but without the little numbers

Here ya go Mouse. I've been waiting for this one to bloom so's I can get a picture. The Sobralia macrantha plant looks a little like very thin bamboo that grows in a clumping style in the highlands of Mexico and Central America up to about 8000 ft. It's really cool to see them growning along the roadside in the mountains.

Last of the spring Santa Cruz Mtns flowers. 11 June
We had nearly twice as much rain this spring as last. The wildflowers loved it.
There's a mix of native and invasive species in the big meadow. The invasives flowered early, the natives slightly later but they held on much longer and did very well.
Hitchhiker in the
rye!!
The rye is a native which has basically been overwhelmed locally by the invasive grasses. Last year, an even drier winter than this one, some rye appeared! This spring there is lots of it in bunches (it's a bunchgrass) in open shady areas. A beautiful tall grass, some of it up to my shoulders! The seeds are now ripe so when I weed whack for fire protection their seeds will be broadcast far and wide.

Who really needs a shrubbery in the forest?

We are better served by nature there.

A yellow brick road to find our way might be nice.

ARTHUR: Oh, Knights of Ni, here is your shrubbery. May we go now?

TALL KNIGHT: That is a good shrubbery. I like the laurels particularly - But there is one small problem...We are now no longer the Knights Who Say Ni!

Some old friends have been planting daffodils on their 5 acre property for the last 40+ years. One year they planted 35,000 bulbs, and currently have planted over 1 million bulbs.

My boss lives in the same area, started a little later and he currently has about 150,000 daffodils on his 8 acres. Toughest looking hands of any executive I know.

It is truly incredible when they are blooming.

Hey Stahlbro
that top plant is native Ice Plant or Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, named for the water cells in the leaf surfaces

It is originally from South Africa, but has seeds that float in Salt Water, and now has spread almost world wide on suitable coast lines.

I grew some from seed for a while, which is easy to harvest from summer dormant plants along the Newport back bay. Not that great of a pot plant.
I just read that's it's edible!

There is another similar species Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum which has the same story, it's not as common at the back bay.

Ahhhh lovely morning roses and cacti.
The wild roses which are rampant in Fairybanks are not in bloom quite yet, but budding. I have two little cacti out in the sun room, apparently abandoned by one of the renters, and I am giving them tiny sips of water, hoping they will live and flourish.

Thank you for the wonderful images to begin the day. It is the day to clean flower beds and gather downfall and dead branches, all of which will go to the Mountain Dragon Fire Pit for a future fire. It promises to be another heavenly sunny day up here. I went for a walk yesterday, and not one mosquito bit me. I am luxuriating in the low mosquito count, knowing the mosquitoes will soon be out in greater numbers. But for now, I am enjoying the walks.

Thank you for the beautiful morning bouquet!

The Dooryard

The sun's gonna shine in my dooryard one day
And when it does I'm gonna say,
Something wise and very profound
As I water the seeds in the ground.

Soon there'll bloom a patch of red,
Looking like the flowers bled.
And in this rainbow mix of hues,
I'll wear no sandals, socks or shoes.

I'll dig the dirt, I'll sweat and toil
My toes will wiggle in the soil.
The worms will caress my dirty feet
The grass will stain my britches' seat.

I'll work until the planting's done,
Then take my ease in the setting sun.
Sunshine came softly to my front door,
Now it's all shady, it's after four.

I'll go round back to view the sun
As soon as I have my dinner done.
I'll drink some wine and smoke some weed,
And smell the flowers--that's all I need.

Iris - by Hermann Hesse :

http://rutlib.com/book/85/p/25

During the spring of his childhood, Anselm used to run joyfully in the green garden. One of his mother’s flowers was called the blue flag, and he was especially fond of it. He used to press his cheek against its tall bright green leaves, touch and feel its sharp points with his fingers, and smell and inhale its wonderful blossoms. Long rows of yellow fingers rose from the pale blue center and stood erect. Between them a light path ran deep down into the calyx and into the distant blue mystery of the blossom. He loved this flower very much and used to stare inside it for moments on end. At times he envisioned the delicate yellow members like a golden fence standing at a king’s garden, and at other times they looked like a double row of beautiful dream trees, and no wind could sway them. The mysterious path into the inner depths ran between them, interlaced with living veins that were as delicate as glass. The vault spread itself out enormously, and the path lost itself infinitely deep between the golden trees in the caverns. Above the path the violet vault bowed majestically and spread thin magic shadows over the silent miracle that was anticipated. Anselm knew that this was the mouth of the flower, that its heart and its thoughts lived behind the splendid yellow protrusions in the blue cavern, and that its breath and its dreams streamed in and out along this glorious bright path with its glassy veins.

In the Starz TV series, DaVinci's Demons, the concoction given to Leo to facilitate his walk among the dead as he lays dying from snakebite, in the Episode titled "The Rope of the Dead," is made from the San Pedro cactus. Needless to say, this is highly fictionalized.

I have used mushrooms which contain mescaline, or was it psilocybin? No matter, I'm here and others aren't, same as it's ever been. However, I have never been possessed by demons, so my take is limited to "recreational use" experience, not shamanistic ritual.

San Pedro cactus.

Echinopsis pachanoi and related species* is used as a tool to facilitate the shaman’s ‘‘journey’’ in order to diagnose and heal the ‘‘magical’’ illnesses, including ‘‘soul loss’’ and ‘‘sorcery’’ from which patients are believed to suffer. More recently, the use of this cactus by those seeking access to ‘‘other worlds’’ for spiritual enlightenment, or just for recreational ‘‘escape’’ from the stresses of daily living, has been increasingly popular throughout the Andes, as well as in the United States and Western Europe. Legality of the use of this mescaline-bearing plant substance in the United States is questionable, because, unlike peyote, Echinopsis/Trichocereus is not listed as a Schedule I hallucinogen by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/ scheduling.html), even though mescaline, the psychoactive alkaloid responsible for its effects, is specifically named. However, preparing, using, distributing, and selling the plant with intent to ingest is specifically cautioned against by many because of the ambiguity of the law.

Also classified as Trichocereus pachanoi,
the Echinopsis label is more recent, more botanically correct, and much less widely used.

Leaving the VA yesterday on my bike, I pedaled into the old hood.
This is north of Bear Creek in the more elite section of town, where the newer homes are built on wheat/rye land formerly owned by Huffman Land and Cattle, then by the Reinero clan, who raised some cotton and tomatoes and grazed some cattle. There is one developer who had a fixation on Yosemite place names.

Royal Arch Ct. is one such. Eagle Peak is another. Royal Arches Street, too. I think the same builders developed another hood to the west. I lived on Denver Way, which was an extension of Denver Avenue in the late eighties.

Plenty to see. This will take a few posts.

Algernon was a mouse that developed or "flowered" into intelligence.
After the operation, when things took a turn for the worst, flowers could then be placed on his grave.

Plastic flowers, not dead flowers, are fine by me, Locker.
My nose is no longer so keen as it was when young and full of snot.
See you in hell's half-acre, choked with weeds and sterile seeds, buddy. :0)
MFM

While out driving in my Mouserati the other night
A Red Staggerwing bush passed within my sight.
I didn't stop to take a look,
I had no time, I read the book.
On my way back, to my surprise,
What then greeted my jaded eyes?
The blooms had faded,
I felt more jaded,
And sadly drove away.

My moral is--and this took me hours--
Take time to stop and shoot the flowers!

Beautiful flowers all around, thank you all!
After it thawed a bit this morning, I went out to see if there were any buds showing yet. No, not even a crocus or a daffodil. The daffodils are only two inches above the ground. But we aren't going to have freezing weather for at least a few days so maybe the flowering plants will be encouraged by the warmth.

Thank you for the beautiful photos.

Timid, nice to stop and admire the mundane, huh?
You realize the sublime when you do so, on occasion.

Sidalcea hirsuta is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family known by the common name "hairy checkerbloom."
It is endemic to California, where it grows in seasonally wet habitat throughout the north-central part of the state, such as vernal pools. It is found in the North California Coast Ranges, the Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley, and the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Stahl Bro, what you got there is an Ariocarpus fissuatus
probably wild collected, possibly hundreds of years old

Here are a couple of mine from 2010, they are quite a bit bigger now
but don't have any recent photos

This one was wild collected, and is very old
(bought from a vendor)

This one was grown from seed and is about 25 years old

Here are a couple different species of Ariocarpus
Or Flowering Stones, they are rock hard!

the physical plane is not a fixed reference.
for it pulses in aggression and recession
according to our needy perception.

we move an inch away from the world
and it awaits our return.

but when we reverse that inch we
find that our world is miles to the right.

i suspect that the flowers enjoy
a similar plurality.

they go and the come and
the bees they sit in their version of a pub
and lament the blurry smile
painted of the stars.

a smile so handsomely captured by van gogh

I am looking for a "flower", maybe you can help me mouse or someone.... When I first began to post on ST I posted a "flower" of a thread all on pictures of climbing from the 70's and 80's. How can I find this "flower" of a thread? It was right after Dan went to heaven, around (maybe spring, summer) of 2008. It includes pictures of two bouldering contests in So Cal and someone is doing a book on US bouldering contests.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Glad to hear you are on the "rosey" road to healing, my friend, Mouse. Would you please email me your phone number? Cheers, lynnie

Thanks for your help clifff, dingus and hooblie. I started here on ST @ 12/07 or 1/08 under my real name Lynne Leichtfuss. Then something happened and I had to change from my real name to LL LL BUT thanks to Mr. Fix Russ Walling he was able to get my real name back. :)))

Anyway, Tarbuster was able to find the thread for me and what a classic if I do say so myself...and I do. It is called, "Some old pics and slides soon ready for ST viewing."

It all worked out. The campfire continues to be awesome!

Aeriq - so nice! A friend at work has 5 acres in a private development in the San Bernardino's. He plants about 15,000 daffodil bulbs every year - estimates he has 300,000 or so today. Took several decades. Yes, he is a bit obsessed. Until last year he allowed tours on his property - he has nice trails, benches, etc. It is quite the sight.
