i love them, though, as they are one of the first spring flowers, and i can dig them up for free, and plant them around my tiny pond...

i will a little picture in, perhaps later, or tomorrow... some more have popped up, and i got some better pics now...

they have a tiny little opening, with a lacy flower egde that is hard to see from angle...

now i have a proper name for them, perhaps now, i can learn more about them...

once again, thanks so very much... :)

Dipper,

good photo. There's no size reference in your photo but I can see the sepals and if you look close they are kinda jagged tipped with tiny translucent glands on the very tips. Anyway it's most likely a Lewisia, and probably Dwarf Lewisia (Lewisia pygaea) or Lewisia glandulosa in the Purslane Family (Portulaceae Family). Sorry but as far as I know there are no accepted common names other than the Dwarf Lewisia or just "Lewisia".

dipper,

I think your photo is Meadow Starwort, Stellaria longipes or palustris

Lewisia is a good guess too, though.

Dipper,
Your close up photo shows the definitive trait. If you look close at the slightly open flower toward the left. THe fleshy sepals just below the flower have those littel reddish shiny translucent glands. The fleshy sepals are a common trait in the Portulacaceae family, which includes Lewisia. Stellaria would'nt have those.

Dipper, your plant is definitely Lewisia, not only that it is probably L. longipetala, which is a rather rare species. Generally, whereabouts did you take this photo? (not specific location, just region and approximate elevation).

Mongrel,

Thanks for the ID.

That plant was located near a slick rock cascade at about 11,200 ft, a mile+ east of Lake Reflection in Kings Canyon National Park.

Here are three more images in the same specific area showing the cascade and another plant I believe is buckwheat.

I backpack quite a bit in the Southern Sierra. I had never seen this Lewisia before in all my travels.

Thanks again for the ID.

Thanks for the flower photos.

Toullumne tradster, could the lone madrone be a manzanita? It looks a lot like one. THey're in the same family, have very similar bark and the same urn-shape to their flowers.

That first photo is a botanist's delight.

also, just to mention, the photo from Jenner includes the invasive ice plant. It grows rapidly and was reportedly introduced to stablize coastal sand dunes.

Edge's photo from the peat bog includes what looks like Sphagmun moss. Not a very common moss, so a real nice find.

Dipper, I agree that it's likely Long Petaled BitterRoot, Lewisia longipetala, a rare and endangered plant. And it's hundreds of miles south of its only known area, an incredible find. You should report it to the CalFlora database with your photos:

http://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/species_query.cgi?where-calrecnum=4774

Also I just ran across a picture of Rosy Stonecrop (Rhodiola integrifolia) that looks alot like the reddish flowered plant that was with the BitterRoot.

Most of the flowers will turn into little avocados, and they will be Avocado Green from day-1. When they get to be about pea-size, most of the little avocados will fall off. The tree will keep as many as it can handle.

After those that know looked at my image of Lewisia, the thought is that it is actually Lewisia glandulosa (Sierra Lewisia) and not L. longipetala.

L. longipetala is found up around Truckee.

L. glandulosa is rather common down where I like to saunter.

No matter the name, it is still a pretty flower in a pretty place.

Hey justthemaid,

The pink thistle is Snowy thistle (Cirsium occidentale), a native thistle. There are several insidious non-native invasive thistles. So it's good to know if it's native, I think.

The weird red stalks are Dudleya, that's the scientific genus name and the common name. I can't tell which species of Dudleya it is, theres about a dozen different ones in California. If you see it again look for the fleshy succulent-like leaves at the base of the stem, the leave usually come to a pointed apex.

excuse me for gettin all nerdy on ya, but I'm kinda into it.

Sempervirens: I'll botany geek-out anytime.

I'm actually familiar with some of the Dudleyas. The top looked right but the bottom leaves looked much different than the ones I've seen before (really tiny leaves). I guess it makes sense that there are several varieties.

I'd never seen that big pink color thistle before. I figured it for a native. I'm familiar with most of the invasives.

My friend Alicia took this one just a few days ago- walking out of Corpse Wall (Stunt Road Slabs) on the top of Calabasas Peak. Really weird crazy fog had been blowing over sporadically all day.

I took a few at Stony the other day. Monkey flower in the endangered red color. Really common in Chatsworth for some reason. I got a few of the orange-red hybrid that occurs when it cross-pollinates with the regular light orange too.

Can I get a little help on identification? I grovel at not recognizing these. Taken 2011_05_29, Leavenworth Washington on the north-east side of Icicle Creek canyon about 500 ft above the valley floor (maybe 2200 ft elevation). They are about 1.5 cm across and had a faint lavender hue that I'm not sure comes through in the photos.

It was an OK climbing day. We're still rusty from the rainy winter.

Hey Mark,
That is a unique plant. The other flower thread, wildflowers 2011 has a few photos of it too. But I don't think it grows up there near Hood River. Does it? I copied the explanation below from the Botanical Society of America web site.

There is a group of non-green flowering plants that is related to the heaths (blueberries, cranberries, rhododendrons) and is often included in the heath family (Ericaceae). This group of non-green plants is a subset of the heath family. Let's call them the monotropoids. Are they parasites? Yes, but in an unusual way. The monotropoids were thought to be "saprophytes." A saprophyte lives on dead plant or animal material, but the monotropoids don't do that. They are parasites on fungi, we can call them mycoparasites. But they don't kill the fungi. The fungi infect the short, stubby roots of the monotropoids, and transfer food and water into the roots. The fungi live in the dense litter of dead leaves in wet forests.

The most striking of the monotropoids is the snow plant, Sarcodes sanguinea. Sarcodes was called the snow plant because it was thought to come up through the snow. But it really doesn't--it comes up after the snow melts or has mostly melted. It grows in conifer forests of California, and portions of western Nevada and northern Baja California.

Some plants of Sarcodes are brilliant red, others are more nearly rose-colored. Why the bright color? Nobody really knows. Such a bright color might attract pollinating insects in the rather shady forest floor areas where the snow plant grows.

I'm obsessed.

Those are for Crimpergirl; we talked about the mints last week. Coyote mint is a native, common in the Sierras.

The next three species are from a fen in the Lakes Basin Recreation area, a local gem where recreation is the priority. It's not a wilderness area but resource extraction is almost entirely excluded.

It's called the bog asphodel but to be technical, in California it grows in fens rather than bogs.

The comment about the fens applies to this species too. It's sometimes called bogbean, but in California it grows in fens. If you look close at that last photo you can see the 3-parted leaf growing on a separate stalk; it's trifoliate hence Menyanthes trifoliata.
I'll shut up now. Gracias a su visita.

Darwin,
That does look like Phlox. But I'm guessing it is in the Borage family and not the Phlox family. It looks a lot like Hackelia, common name "stickseed". Is this a plant in the wild? Or is it cultivated in a garden? What state is it in? Washington?

Anyway if you're so inclined you could look for any king of fruit on tha plant and post a photo of it; or you could google the Hackelia and/or Cynoglossum genus. Many of the Borages have some kind of prickles on the fruit making it bur-like.

A cool globe-shape head of flowers, but an even cooler name.

It's not actually a lily, but I prefer that common name over "California pitcher plant".

The insect flies toward these "windows", presumably to escape. But it gets caught in some small hairs. The plant then secretes an enzyme and digests its prey.

I thought you might like to check these out.

thanks cliffhanger, i can usually enjoy an unnamed flower(ing bush) but i actually had looked to ID that one,
so impressive was an encounter with the ghost flower ... one fine day in the santa monica's.

wiki says it mimics another necter producing flower, and attracts bees to pollinate without reward

Hawethorn seems close but maybe not quite. Not sure. Flower seems very different to any of the species I could find online. Has up to 12 petals. No thorns either. It is not one of the six species of hawethorns I have information for I don't think. The leaves do seem similar to some types of hawethorn as is the fruit.

Sure is a beautiful little tree right now.

I have gone through a few tree/shrub guides but not found anything that seemed correct.

Beautiful pics.

Maybe someone here can tell me the name of this flowering bush...

At Twin Lakes, CA, on Horsecreek Tr to Matterhorn, Sawtooth Range.

Much appreciated if anyone knows.
Thanks!

Here's another that is a very rare bird in my neck of the woods. Also a complete mystery. Don't think I've ever seen one before in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin. Any ideas?

Picture of this one was June 8th, 2014, Horsethief Canyon, Woodfords, CA. I hope to return to the site soon to check out its bloom development. Maybe next week.

Lastly, since I'm on a roll here, how about this as well. I see them everywhere in the area, Sierra eastside Tahoe to Twin Lakes, and I've always wanted to know its name. It comes mostly in blue to purple to red I think...

These were also high up off Woodfords Canyon, CA, pics taken in June 2014.

Any beta much appreciated!!

It is great place. A group of good friends meet there every year. These were in the campground a few years back.

I haven't been out to the hills to shoot since COR. These are city-slicker flowers. The last shot is from in front of the Dollar Tree discount store.

Thank you Mouse from Merced. They are easier to photograph than birds.
