Actually my previous guess was rubbish. On reflection I think the one sitting down in the white jersey on the rock is John Syrett, gritstone god and mate of Al Manson, and the one in the white trousers is Graham 'Streaky' Desroy, another Yorkshire climber of the period (and the present for that matter).

The guy on the right is bugging me: I'm sure I've seen him before, but I can't put a face to him.

Good company you were keeping.

John,
If given the choice,I would decline the honor of a citation in the guidebook for falling, no matter how well-deserved! Thanks for helping with the names in the picture. I seem to recall Martin Berzins was one of the group we met around Leeds. We had a stellar trip, with marvelous climbs and good blokery everywhere we went.

Actually it was only one edition of the guidebook, I think. On a happier note, Accomazzo’s Wall on Fachwen, the bouldering area on the hill above Llanberis, made the same guidebook. I enjoyed this problem although it is a little difficult to find without local assistance, and I fear is now sinking into obscurity (Fachwen is deeply unfashionable).

Is it possible that the photo was taken on the day of the actual first ascent of Usurper? I have done a bit of armchair research by taking the liberty of posting the photo on a couple of UK sites, and some of my fellow gritstone-history geeks think that the chap in the white top is Nicky Stokes, who made the FA seconded by Al Manson.

Tarbuster--

I'm pretty sure the unidentified blonde guy is Eric Ericson.

No, No...
Blitzo is merely performing an unabashed girth check.
Either that or he was blazin' and thought it was detaching...

Buzz, you got a Royal and a Royal clone in your front row, but I can't tell the diff. Real shady types in the back row.

Yeah. Good catch. It is a little known fact that Royal's other brother is also named Royal. Sort of explains the name, in a perverse way. Very different personalities. Led to lots of confusion. They had the ability to substitute themselves mid climb without anyone knowing. We all know the feeling where you start up with one partner and feel like you end with another. Pratt was in on it, but he was so quite most of the time.

You are in there too, Ryan--you and Peter Mayfield in your early days of dressing as girls. Criminal if you ask me. Some of the other characters include Jello, Deuce, Chris Vandiver, Dick Erb, DMT, Brutus, Karl, Lois, Crimpester, and Mimi.

Cannot make it the sushifest--I lost my last appeal and starting serving my time last week.

OK Rick, I'll venture an ID guess on that last one:

Base of right side of Weeping Wall.

Jan (G_Gnome) McCollum, Mike Pope, Alan Nelson, Unknown knee (but those shoes should be a clue), Unknown big guy, Mari Gingery, Perhaps Lynn behind the trees, and possibly moi?
