Nef,

it sounds like your saying that for all walls you're not supposed to cry like a girl.

what if you just were advanced base camp manager and didn't belay at all?

I think a discredit would be done to those that do work vs. those that merely are along for the ride if we don't include belay monkeys.

I'd rather lead and not haul and not jug.

still working out how that can be accomplished in reality.

i met a very attractive lady who was available for guided climbs performed in an honorable fashion on a day to day basis while her boyfriend
l a n g u i s h e d, as a hitch- hiker behind some real noobs who were on what looked to be a six day ascent of the nose. scott f. had done something stout and notable.(mescalito in '77?) and had kick off the sack i think with a hammock attached. it drifted horribly and hung up some where near the nose? rappel route. so each day we would glass him and he slumped like a dead man in slings behind these happy bozo's making next to no daily progress till he was above the target and could swing into action at a reasonable pace. i guess there's some sort of polite understanding that you should not wrestle the glory from your hosts and lead it for them. i really felt sorry for his predicament, while we climbed a bunch of stuff and i, well, at least imagined what he was missing.

My guess is that Osbourne got paid. That makes him a...I don't know?

I also thought he did some leading on the route. I found his story pretty inspiring. Kid kicks his drug habit, lost a bunch of weight, started sport climbing in Thailand, and got offered a deal to do a TV show on the Salathe. Probably most of us aren't so rich that we'd turn that down on principle.

Being guided and hitch hiking seem different. Many pitches have been fixed by passing parties, but I've never heard of anyone hitch hiking a whole route besides Chongo.

What's the longest YOSAR rigged rescue jug to the summit?

Not exactly on topic, but kinda'

BITD, topped out on some El Cap route- can't remember what or with who. It was late in the day and we were hoofing it down - as much as one can with a pig on your back - when we run into this lone guy around the top of Zodiac. He has this idea that he's going to hike out the Falls trail - no headlamp, water, or idea where he's going. We tell him "yer gonna die". So instead of allowing that to happen we let him come with us. He had never been on a rope nor had he rapped before - and this was when the standard raps were way down at the very bottom of East Ledges. Anyway, we taught him to rappel on the spot, and that was that.
