We've lost some friends this year no doubt.

Often there is a memorial for the family and closer friends, and sometimes it's followed by a public memorial for the community and whomever is inspired by the life of that person.

The Public memorial for Brutus is going to be the last weekend in August and initial details are here.

http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.html?topic_id=905486

John Bachar's more private memorial was yesterday and there is no doubt many more people who would like to honor John and his inspiration. I figure we climbers, with perhaps some input from his close friends and family might engineer an organic, pot-luck, speeches, music and climbs kinda memorial somewhere in YOsemite, Tuolumne or the East Side that all could attend. Ideas and Volunteers?

Mighty Hiker (Anders) suggested that we might do such a thing at the Facelift. I'm thinking that since the facelift attracts everyone, perhaps one night could be set aside to honor ALL those who have left us whom we wish to remember (but that's just my thoughts)

This thread is a brainstorm and organizing place for those wishing to take a lazy man's idea and make reality of it.

Peace

I think this is a fine idea. The tribe has lost many this year, and it is fitting, that in one of our biggest gatherings, we honor those who are no longer with us.

I haven't really thought this through, and maybe others already have plans. Karl mentioned the idea of an "all comers" memorial for John, I suggested that it might be at some point during the FaceLift, he suggested that we might also remember all those lost over the last year, at the same or another time - John, Ouch!, Brutus, Woody, and others. (I believe that Ouch!'s daughter - AllieKat - hopes to be at the FL.)

The FL (September 23rd - 27th) seems a possible time - many will be coming to the Valley then, and it would allow others to make plans to come. Bearing in mind that the priority is ensuring that the FL is successful, and that it's all OK with Ken and doesn't add to his already prodigious workload, it may be workable.

I suggest that whatever might be done be at a distinct time and location, and announced as a memorial. Not just another FL social event, but something with organization and purpose. Not perhaps a 'formal' memorial, but not informal either - an opportunity to grieve as a community. It might be combined with other things, e.g. food and drink, or an auction for Tyrus (Chris?).

Unless we had it on an afternoon during the FL - which would take away from garbage collection time - the evenings of the 22nd and the 26th seem possible. The 22nd is a Tuesday just before the FL starts, and has become a time for a SuperTopo gathering, but as it's during the week may not be easy for all to attend. The 26th is the Saturday, which is a quiet night for FL events, except the autumn dance is in El Portal.

Whatever is done will take some organizing and work, and needs to fit in with Ken's plans for the FL.

ps Those who have a good idea, and carelessly express it aloud, may be taken to have volunteered to help make it happen. :-)

pps If there is a memorial for John at another time, I'll try to be there.

It is very sad that so many have fallen recently .

The facelift is uplifting and a good cause to focus on.

Grieving is sad and they dont seem to go together.

Agreed, it may not be the best time and place, but for many who are there it may be the only time they're all together in the Valley. So if nothing else, perhaps at some point we can all raise a toast in memory of absent friends. But maybe something suitable during the FL, but distinct from it, can be arranged.

Perhaps instead of a group memorial where it would be difficult to equally celebrate the lives of all of the precious people who left us this year, the entire facelift could be performed in their honor/memory.

"The facelift is uplifting and a good cause to focus on.

Just my experience. I've been to a couple memorials lately and they seemed uplifting to nearly all involved. Even Tyrus had a lot of fun at John's Memorial. Picking up trash is, if anything, tougher than celebrating the lives of our fallen bros.

But each might have their own opinion, I'm just saying, if you haven't been to a climber's memorial, you might not understand that our tribe knows how to say goodbye without it being dark and morose

BtW, the ideas of a public memorial for John and something for all the fallen at the facelift are not mutually exclusive. Both are possible on separate dates and the facelift event could be anything from a toast or moment of silence to a specific event.

Perhaps it's presumptive of me to suggest a public memorial for John. Most are far closer, but after seeing the outpouring on Supertopo about him, I'm thinking it could be a welcome gathering and perhaps have a positive fundraiser aspect as well.

Let's see who chimes in with what input and this can evolve. Keep it bumped now and then

Hi Karl,

A toast or a moment of silence are great ideas.

Im pretty sure that Ken already has the week booked with events ,music ,slide shows and dinner and such.

Picking up trash and honoring the dead will never go hand in hand with me.

Prior to or after might be more fitting.

I think its great that you are tossing ideas out and im sure that something very positive will come from these discussions and this thread .

Evening bump, to see if there is other discussion, especially as those who were in Mammoth on Monday wend their way home, and may want to add.

At the memorial someone asked me to organize a public memorial and I think Al Dude and Rick Cashner want to get something going on a musical side down at Derryberry's place at Mill Creek Station. John loved music and it would be a good theme(and party)and I talked with Roger Derryberry and he as always, without hesitation offered up his services and place. I can't say this will happen, but I think it's a very good option. Roger thought maybe October when it's cooler would be good. Let the party begin!

Maybe a $20.00 each donation would be cool to put to the Tyrus Trust Fund, I say $20.00 DONATION, but for those of us with less, any amount would be a good tribute in Johns name for his son! There's gonna be some supertopo guide books going up for auction with dang near every living American climbing legends autograph in them, I hope you guys cough up the BIG BUCKS for these, they are for sure collector items that are ONE of a kinds, I would say at least worth hundreds each, if not more! They are museum pieces. Just look at the photos from the memorial thread, they are all in there and more, got some signatures at the Camp 4 Reunion as well. I'll see if it's cool to take some photos of the autographs and post em up. In any case, these are really cool books.

Right on Baba, and thanks for the inspiration this weekend, I had to say those words because they are so, so true and kinda of soul of Bachar. You hit it right on the head in dealing with grief.

If a memorial for John, perhaps combined with a fundraiser for Tyrus, was to happen sometime shortly before or after the FaceLift, I'd hope to attend, and help.

I look forward to bidding on a few of the things in the auction, too.

Oh Yeah.....this is gonna happen! @ first we thought a backwoods location with a generator would be appropriate - as John would heartily approve. Mill Creek would be equally fitting as it was with the Harding event - Roger & Mary Lou are good folks and John liked their scene. Many bands including Erratics, Soul Reason and E side (which gregg saw @ the Tap and was basically all us wannabe funk jammers led by John)are stoked to send Bachar off in the style he would have wanted. Probably late summer/early fall...I'll keep you tacos posted!
