unless they patch them, all the energy is going to drain out.

that and it would seem hypocritical in some sense to pull and not patch. It's a political statement, we all know the legality. Why pull?

i wrote my letters, I get to bitch as much as I want.

Well the Forest Service bought special granite plugs to fill the holes so the "energy does not escape".

The energy goes to all of us who have worshipped there.

This is perhaps the ugliest development of it's kind I have ever encountered, talk about desecration...

Do granite plugs work to stem energy escape in volcanic rock?

How big a plug will be needed to fill the hole made by the highway, and prevent energy from escaping from it?

f - this

If Devils Tower regional tribes can share, and climbers can share, then why not everyone share? Darn, 'public' and 'government' terminology.

I wonder if the Colonel could have forged a more equitable outcome?

I don't imagine that Mr. John Dayberry is going to be very popular with any of his climbing friends. I hope he's being paid very well to be the poster child for this removal. Also find it interesting that he's wearing climbing shoes in order to rappel in and turn a wrench. Maybe he's not a climber after all?

Had some good times climbing there BITD, and while I see the cultural side of this argument, it's sad to see it go.

Interesting how nobody saw anybody taking shits or busting booze bottles there, only the climbers were visible.

Pretty sad about this. Cave Rock was kind of a ghetto crag, but it still kicked ass.

I fear that this represents a more disturbing trend -- where the Forest Service decides climbing doesn't deserve to use the mountains. I'm still sore about the fixed anchor ban, however temporary, in certain Sierra wilderness areas during the Clinton days, so forgive me if I don't trust federal resource managers.

If this were truly out of respect of religious beliefs, I'd say fine. We have plenty of other areas to climb. I worry, though, that those who don't climb -- or who think they, exclusively, should decide who uses "their" mountains, might decide they don't like climbing and climbers. After all, even with our obvious intellectual and moral superiority, there aren't nearly enough of us to make a real political difference.

Do you think all the work that was done to the base around the rock(adding a stone boundary and making a nice path) had anything to do with the ban? Were there greater concerns than just putting in bolts and climbing?
