I remember a band called The Fents who used to open for guys like Holdsworth, Bruford, Dixie Dregs etc. They kicked butt. I wonder what ever happened to those guys.

I'm still a big Maynard Ferguson fan, even if his band was always top-heavy in trumpets with not enough 'bones. Hella set of chops on buddy, that's for sure.

I'll get to the New Guinea stories later. For now, dig it - Satriani doing a love song. When the guy slowed down, he was amazing.

Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" "Jack Johnson"
Weather Report. Check out the YouTube clips from the German concert in 78.
Bought Carlos Santana's 2004 Montreux concert Hymn for Peace (DVD) the other day. Carlos and band with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John McLauchlin, Ravi Coltrane, Angelique Kidjo. It cooks big time. Imagine Wayne blowing on everything from A Love Supreme to Exodus to a John lee Hooker boogie. Plus Santana's band has Dennis Chambers on drums, one of the real powerhouses out there. Best thing is everyone is having a blast as it is like a Miles Davis reunion without Miles. Carlos's trumpet player does a good job of channeling up Miles on In a Silent Way.

How did this *smooth jazz* abomination ever take over from fusion?
I blame Dave Koz and Kenny G[orelick].
Kenny G[orelick] used to play with a group called The Jeff Lorber Fusion, and they kicked ass. It wasn't no *smooth jazz* nonsense either.
The beginning of the end was televised. I saw Kenny Gorelick on Soul Train, as "Kenny G" in about '87. I had been following those guys for years, but here's Gorelick blowing something I had never heard, and it wasn't exactly his best stuff either.
Koz followed Gorelick as sax man in The Jeff Lorber Fusion, and then followed Gorelick down the same smooth jazz rat-hole just as fast.
Who's doing serious fusion now in the Twenty-First Century? Please advise.

Stanley Clarke is the best bass player alive, and maybe the best ever. Probably the best ever.
I never saw Jaco. I saw Clarke in '84 with Return To Forever (Correa, White, DiMeola), and a couple years ago with Bella Fleck and Jean-Luc Ponty. Clarke kicked ass in '84, but he had improved his game a ton by the time I saw him in '05.
