Here is a chance to clean out your garage or closet. Make room for all the cool stuff you got for Christmas and donate to a good cause. I need help outfitting my Boy Scouts.

We focus on leadership skills and high adventure. That includes backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, and service projects to the communtity. The families that my boys come from find it difficult to equip their boys with good quality gear that makes it easier to do these activities. We are planning a 50 mile backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada this summer. In the spring we will be doing a couple of short backpacking trips to get ready. Also on tap for the spring is climbing at Pinnacles Nation Monument. Coming up in February is the annual Klondike Snow Trip to Shaver Lake in the Sierras.

I have a couple of generations of gear from my personal use that I loan, but it just isn't enough. Often my gear is a little to large for the boys. Anything would help us out. Items that need some minor repair are fine. Shoes that might need a resole soon are just fine also (Barry can work some magic).

I am in need of:
Hiking Boots
Climbing Shoes
Hard Shell Jackets
Hard Shell Pants
Fleece Jackets
Down Jackets
Backpacks
Sleeping Bags
Backpacking Stoves

All it would cost you is a little postage to help these boy out.

Please email me for a shipping address.

Thanks in advance.

Here are some samples of past activities.

Just so you know if you ever need to borrow some gear Theron drop me a line, I have a few extra harnesses (2 swamis) and some helmets that fit kids because I too take out groups from time to time, especially the older my daughter gets, anyhow, would be happy to loan it out.

Any size shoe. THe boys tend to be size 9 to 12 but I get younger scouts with sizes7 to 9 also. Shirt sizes tend to be the medium variety. some larges in there too. I could probably fit a small on one of the boys (hasn't really hit his growth spurt yet). Anything would help. Thanks.

Roxy:
Thanks. I will probably take you up on that for the Pinnacles trip.

I've got 1 or 2 pairs of shoes that still have some life I'm willing to throw your way. I'm in Los Osos, do you ever make it down this way? I'll also probably be passing through Paso a couple times in the next month.

I just wanted to say thanks for the donations so far. Some great people have really nice contributions. The boys could still use some more stuff.

Adam:
I was at Cabrillo last Saturday. I might be down in SLO on Saturday. I might take my kids out to Montana de Oro. I don't know yet. Email me your phone numer if you don't mind. Thanks!

Hey, Theron, sorry about the odd shoe. I sent 2 pairs of ballets & found a random ace in my haulbag. I don't even know where it came from.
I figure "more is better" always applies.

Hoot! Right back at ya!
More is better. I'll have fun explaining why there is only one of those shoes.

Weschrist:

Sorry about your negative experience and the horrible way it was handled. I knew that when I started this thread there would be some negative backlash about Boy Scouts. I think that a majority of the Scouts and Troops are not like your experience. We strive to be a postive example when we are out.

To answer your questions:

"1) not to trundle"
My scouts climb and understand the problems associated with trundling. We climb at Pinnacles at least once a year and it is loose there. They understand that those small rocks go down and can really hurt.

"2) to respect other's space (both physical and auditory)"
This is a tough one to teach but I really try hard to have them keep the noise level down. There isn't much worse than loud neighbors when you want to get an alpine start. We consider someones campsite their home and not somewhere to be without their permission. Trail ettiquete is something that we work to be good at because we are usually a larger group (8 to 15).

"3) to stay on trails when possible"
Cutting trail sucks because of erosion. I have been on trail crews in the Ventanna with my Boy Scouts. Having to repair the damage done by others is a great lesson not to do it in the first place.

4)I'll add to it that we pick up all our trash and what was left by others. Leave as you found it or better if it is cleaner.

Man where were you back in the years I was in the Immokalee lodge? I had to quit cuz I did more camping and wilderness exploration on my own. I'll dig through my stuff and see what I can send. Unfortunately I already took most of my spare stuff and gave it to the porters in TZ. You might want to check with ski resorts. I got Aspen to donate all of their old rental jackets. I still have mine. It's windpro ralph lauren with a aspen leaf on the back. Was in excellent condition when I got it complete with little rental number. They gave me about 12 of them. Picture a bunch of Africans running around in ralph lauren Aspen ski school jackets!

Yeah... you boy scouts always DID do more fun things than the girl scouts did... The guys across the street from me (scouts, of course) were alwaysalways doing something cool and fun while me and my girl scout troop were stuck inside cross stitching (no joke there!!) b/c our leaders weren't the "outdoorsy" type.

Ah well... obviously they kept me from playing outside!! Riiiiight...

T, check your email, I may be able to help you out.

Feelio:

We light plenty of fires but do our best to keep 'em under control. A time and place for all things, right? Besides fire pictures don't come out to well in my experience.

jbar:
Thanks for the advice. I will follow up on it. LOL on the porters wearing Ralph Lauren! Glad you are spreading the wealth to those who can really use it. It is too bad that Scouting didn't work for you. I believe the outing is the majority of scOUTING.

Cosmic:
I'll take whatever you can give and put it to good use.

Joe:
We haven't set a date for the Pinnacles trip and with out looking at my calender I want to say that it is April. I will hopefully be up there sooner for a personal trip to climb some stuff. Westside ROCKS!

Blackbird:
I helped found, and then helped run as an Advisor, a Venture Crew. Venture Crews are coed 14+. I had a kick butt female advisor that would do all the crazy stuff right with us. We went to Yosemite a couple of times. Climbed swan slab, hiked Half Dome in a day and played in the river. The group dynamics are a little different with girls. I think it tones the boys down and puts them on better behavior. Good times were had by all. Too bad you didn't get to be a part of a good crew. I think you would have really enjoyed it.

Thanks to all of you so far.
