And besides that, prolly 10 to 20 times more people (lurkers) read and enjoy the trip reports than the few who post on a LED thread.

Lynne, if you write a trip report and you want lots of posts, then say something controversial, so people can argue. Otherwise, even if everyone posts "great trip report" once, it still only amounts to about 100 regular posters. "I added a bolt" is a good way to get lots of post. Get 2 people arguing at each other and they can quickly add 100 posts. ( guilty as charged your honor ) Just the realities of life. That is why a lot of people want a trip report archive.

Hey I know. Let's just talk about climbing all the time. Cause there is nothing else going on in the world.

I think that if ST had a "views" number, like some forums do, we would see that a lot of climbing-related threads get a good number more views that it would seem based on the posting in the thread.

There are a LOT more people who read this forum than post. Some people NEVER have posted even once, yet they read the thing daily.

I, for one, read almost all the old style climbing threads, but don't comment in them. I read the entire half dome thread and kept up with it until about post #1500. Have made no comment in it. I try to read the TR's but if the pictures load slowly, unfortunately I often cannot wait for them.

But, the social commentary and current events threads - it's just that they often have posts which people have opinions on; sometimes string opinions. And they have a built-in design which is more the type where back and forth comments between people happen.

"It would be fun to see the forum view numbers. Then we would KNOW the favorite threads."

Most likely, the webmaster has the site on some sort of counter program. I am not sure, but I think those programs can be specific as to forum threads. If so, they can see exactly what pages get clicked on, how long people stay there, which pages are the most popular, and such.

Dude,

LEB probably generates more hits than any other poster on this site. IF ST gets paid by advertisers per hit, LEB is a gold mine.

Ten years from now, you won't remember a single trip report on ST, but you will never forget the whacky, adamantly non-climbing nurse practitioner who tied half the viewers in knots, and god only knows what happened to the other half.

LEB spells entertainment.

"This Article Pisses Me Off" = 222 posts

In an interview on NPR, I think, John Cleese said something like the following about Terry Gilliam*

"That yank says only one of two things, "I really like that", or "That really pisses me off".

Maybe it's a yin/yang thing?

*Terry Gilliam, the only American member of Monty Pythons' flying circus, was the animator and occasional actor. He codirected 'the holy Grail' and 'Life of Brian'(?) he went on to direct 'Time bandits', Jabberwocky', 'The Fisher King', The sixth element (I think) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and a bunch more.

The best posts with the most elegant writing often get few comments.

Dirt, you are correct sir--let me clarify what I meant by "few". The different people involved in the thread. Many posts are generated because Lois is gracious enough to answer everbody (the few)--to the point of ad nauseum... but nonetheless, gracious. The continuance is her contribution and "session". Join, read, or stay away, there it is.

Her threads are important to her (and others), and her participation is zestful (your goldmine reference here).

Everything human falls into a normal curve, which is explainable--including the campfires at the tacostand.

All in good fun, 'cept when it's time to get shite Done on the stone. Dyno da crux.

Just reread this Thread in its entirety. I believe I've seen the LIGHT. (Hope that word doesn't offend you Weschrist?)

Dissension and Off Topic Threads are valuble for the health of ST. There, I've said it. Can I get off suspension now? The vortex is calling.

Hey Lynne,

Pretty funny comparison there. If we all took minimal posts as a sign of interest this could be a pretty uptight place. What people call “lurking” can out weigh the actual posts in a huge way. There is a site in Australia that shows actual viewings to a thread and for example a strong subject like ethics or bolting can have 1500 posts with 20,000+ viewings. I would venture to guess the recent Half Dome debate had 40-50,000 views. and the old Stonemaster stories a similar number.

So all in all posts aren’t everything and I can only take the pats on the back so much before it makes me feel a little funny. I would prefer to have a thread that inspires vs creating a good ole boy aura. When someone remembers a thread and brings it back to the lime light again I feel lucky to have tripped a memory cell out there. Even with a topic on the second or third page I still see traffic come to my site. And if the stars are aligned someone buys a climbing pant.

I have found, as a sounding board this place is great, you can find old friends and you make a lot of new ones. I feel real honored with the slew of personal emails I get. From the thanks for rescuing my whoever way back to the remembering when we did this or that. So there is really a lot that happens behind the scenes. The posts are just the tip of the ice berg, so to speak.

So since you didn’t want a comment, here you have it anyway. Everyone summed it up well.

Mike Graham

PS: I did want to see the “unrepeated” thread get bigger. Some of those routes must be inspiring for some.

Several other climbers' websites post the number of visitors/viewers, which can be helpful.
