So, I just recently completed construction my home climbing wall. Prior to this project I never built anything more complicated than a LEGO set, thus in some ways I am amazed it's not come crashing down on me. Out of that fear, I suppose, I probably over-engineered the thing. My wife also insisted that it double as a workout room for her (non-climber) and "fit" with the rest of the house and the basement (i.e. be finished off). So, starting with a corner of the unfinished (though one day to be) basement, I began framing. What I've ended up with is a 16x12 room with a 16 foot wide climbing wall. Angles are 20 degrees, 50 degree, and not-quite-70 degrees, with a little bit of roof for giggles. I've put down 3/4" foam tiles, and have a 2" thick 5'x10' tumbling pad on top of that. Anyway, having just finished mine I was curious what cool home woodies others have built. For me, this thing is a God-send for training.

Nice job. Looks great. You might have to get a blind for that window next to the TV. Could be some glare? ;)

I'll finish mine up by Christmas and post some pics.

Tomcat and I have our indoor wall planned out but really want to construct some sort of ice tower this winter in our yard. Anyone have experience in ice towers?

I've had two:

My first one:

And then my current wall:

The white, foam "holds" are for swinging ice tools. Lotta fun.

I've got an old harness. I tore the leg loops off and tied a 12-foot length of climbing rope onto it. You can drag the rope behind you like you're leading to practice clipping efficiently or from small holds.

A buddy of mine introduced the idea to me when he put on The Big Dwarf Rodeo Climbing Competition in his garage with a bunch of us who worked and climbed together. I found it to be a worthwhile training component ... at least it adds an interesting element to an indoor wall.

Does anyone have any good plans for a free standing wall that might fit in a 12ft. x 12 ft. x 8ft. (ceiling) space? I live in an apartment and have just taken on some work that might make it difficult to get to the gym in the evenings.

Share your plans!

emac,

that's plush.....A friend told me 35 degrees is a very good training angle. Looks like you have it covered. I am now officially jealous. I think/know I need to make my wall outdoors-covered. Good post for me...you reminded me how I have wanted a wall at my house. Best get off my big fat (not like fatrad's I assume) ass, and goes ands builds me one of 'em.

Nice emac! Straight forward no nonsense, good angles! great for training.

Are those nine foot ceilings, and what type of flooring system is that.

Sometime around 1980, I built a bouldering cave in my basement. It had cracks of different sizes, and what I considered to be innovative, bolt-on wooden holds. I was promptly ridiculed by my friends, including one who mockingly made me a t-shirt that said "master of pine". But, I've been told most visionaries aren't recognized until they're long dead :)

three of my favorite woodies:

Gary's crack, 16 feet of fun on Wide Wednesdays or Thrash Thursdays
side view:
bidness view:

we are slowly evolving to the most difficult width... right now 3 3/8" seems to be a killer, off fists, off feet, no knee... oh my!

Zander's crack complex, especially cool is soloing the Steck Salathe "Narrows Simulator" ®

please note that those little cracks on the left are killer too.

Finally, scuffy b has a machine too, and it's a beaut!
here's Mr. Smooth hisself standing next to his creation

notice that he has room to go up!

pain is weakness leaving the body
I felt so much less weak after this lap!

and the master doing it in "classic" mode:

armbars and gastons....

...these are woodies which are able to get you in that Kaukulator-puke zone so well described in James' thread

Nice gym eh? How Tom still saw fit to whine and complain of mistreatment is beyond me.....

Edit- Nice crack simulators Ed. I get sympathetic abrasions just eyeballing them.
