My friend, Lisa, just called me from Owens and said that her dog, Oof, has been missing since Friday afternoon.

EDIT: PHOTOS BELOW!

Last seen: Lower Gorge Parking Lot
Name: Oof, Oofy
Size: Medium (I'll guess 40 lbs.)
Coat: Black, longish and sort of glossy like a retriever.
Breed: Mutt, retrieverish face, but quite a bit shorter.
Owner: Lisa, 415-5505-4139, and if you can't reach her, my # is 510-316-9655.

She's friendly, but going deaf so she might not hear you call her.

She should have tags on unless something happened to make her loose them or her collar.

She's 17 years old and has some health problems. She's been pretty good lately, but she's got a problem in her ears that makes her have issues with her balance and makes her head turn to the side a bit sometimes too.

Lisa said that she was really happy when she headed into the weeds when they arrived, but she never came back out, and they haven't been able to find her anywhere in the vicinity, so she may have fallen ill.

Lisa said she'd e-mail me a picture as soon as she gets somewhere that she can do e-mail. In the meanwhile if any of her other friends have one that they could post, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

Posting phone numbers may attract creeps.

Just a thought.

lesson learned the hard way.

A 17 year old dog (!) that disappeared into the bush probably did so to die.

Did it knott?

Tags??? Call the pound in BigPine, Bishop, Mammoth.... dogs get picked up and carried sometimes in the wrong direction to the various pounds. Marty Lewis found his dog Blue on the Internet once when it went missing!!!! Mug shot is worth a thousand words. Best of luck for your friend and her pooch.

Dogs do often show up 7 to 10 days after. And where they were, what adventures they experienced while out.....only the other dogs will ever know.....

One of my clients had her dog get lost while being boarded at a new location in upstate NY. The dogs were left unattended, and one dug through the fence. Off the group went....

Unfamiliar terrain, heartbroken guardians, and then, when they least expected it - he walks back to the boarding facility 10 days later, none the worse for wear but a bit lighter.

Let's hope this is the case. If there are people who can get to the "drop" point where the car was, to check for her, that would be really good. Definitely post a photo/contact at that spot too.

Beautiful dog, I'm sending out positive vibes. I've had dogs and even cats do a walkabout of over a week before Be positive.

Oh, man ... nothing kills me more than lost dogs. I hate that.

My good thoughts to you guys. Hoping for a safe, quick return of Oof. She's a beauty. Keep us posted.

Hope the "puppy" gets returned safely.

Some encouragement: According to our local humane society website, 90 % of dogs with tags/chips get returned to their owner.

Also, FYI: If you adopt a dog from the humane society they have an implanted chip; however, this chip is absolutely worthless unless you call one of the registration centers to provide your contact info for that chip.

So many dogs out there with chips, but no contact info.

Thanks for the well wishes and keeping this on the front page. Maybe she'll reveal herself to the next crew of weekenders, so keeping folks aware might help. Lisa has posters with her picture up around the area.

I haven't heard anything from her yet today, but I'm going to be in touch w/ her after my class tonight, and might go out to Owens to help her look/wait for a few more days tomorrow if she doesn't turn up today.

Oofy is very old, so the chances of her having a health problem that kept her from coming back out of the bushes is substantial. It will also make it harder for her to survive the elements. Lisa was concerned that it would be very hard for her to find water since she thought it would have been very hard for her to find her way down to the Gorge. She disappeared from the parking lot as soon as they arrived, so she wasn't oriented with the area yet.

I've still got my fingers crossed that she's hanging out at a watering hole somewhere waiting for someone to amble by with a sandwich that she can steal.

Even if the worst has happened, it would still be nice to find her and know that she's not lost and give her a nice resting place.

Melissa,

We're all hoping Oofy will be found safe and sound. Tell your friend Lisa that everyone's keeping their eyes open for her and sending good thoughts. Most of us have pets that we love beyond words, too.
