Good Morning to All. This is an Great And Incredible Mountainer!!! Chapeau!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the most accomplished Alaskan winter climbers is Masatoshi Kuriaki, who is nicknamed the Japanese Caribou. In 1998, he soloed Denali in winter and in 2006 spent 58 days alone trying to solo the South Buttress of Denali. In 2007, he made the first solo winter ascent of Mount Foraker.

Over the past 15 years, Kuriaki has made at least 10 attempts to solo Mount Hunter in winter. Mount Hunter is a 4,442-metre peak with a number of classic alpine lines, such as the West Ridge and Moonflower Buttress.

Amazing.

Some people are clearly more cut out for finding an extreme niche than others.

How do people afford to do this type of thing? Winter gear ain't cheap. Is this dude from a loaded family or did he just save money and then bail?

Pretty cool nonetheless.

I admit to thinking it was 800 consecutive days, and in my head I heard myself say "THIS YEAR?!!!" hahah

As a "single unit," I can vouch for the belief in the good of solitude. I need it to feel inspiration on creative ideas, and to process spiritual concepts that would otherwise flit through my mind and evaporate.

It is possible that there is such thing as being TOO singular, but I think so long as a person is ABLE to function at an acceptable level when in the company of others, they haven't hit that ceiling.

One thing I definitely do NOT have in common with that dud, though, is the need for solitude in the cold. I shut down pretty tightly when the temps have me uncomfortable. About all I think about then is getting to somewhere warm(usually under my blankies in the van, or a library of coffee shop), but I know I don't have much introspection in those moments.

In japan guys like this are about - working all summer to spend winters alone in the mountains. Its a thing. Its a strain that runs thru japanese alpinism that western alpinism doesnt really have, tho john muir would have dug it. Somewhere between asceticism and athleticism. Lone nuts far from town are a mainstay of the culture.

Taking it to alaska is another level tho.

maybe he just felt like climbing. By going alone he didn't have to put up with stupid comments from humans. Or maybe he has cel. service and posts here as...

Just see how Americanos and Kanadians can't understand anything beyond their western culture.

The western culture needs to blather and hear blather incessantly both visually and in writing.

Blah, blah blah blah blah blah is the western way.

Westerners need to sit in a cave for 108 years to drain the swamp in their minds to learn .....

I've no idea how many days I've spent alone on mountains in the Cascades (and other continents), often in winter, though it's nowhere close to 800. Maybe he doesn't suffer fools well. I get that.

didn't know of this fellow until reading the first post

spending that amount of time on those peaks in that range in winter is hard to fathom. I wonder why one would make that a lifestyle.
