So I took a fall mountain biking this past weekend. It was a stupid fall going really slowly. I wasn't paying attention went off the trail slightly, went into the leaves and under the leaves there was a rut. My front wheel sunk into the rut and my front suspension compressed and I went BLAMMMO into the ground. Thought I just hurt my arm. My arm is now fine but my ribs hurt. So I just did a self examination and I'm pretty sure I fractured some ribs. Symptoms include pain while breathing and on contact around the problem area. Check and check. The acid test is to push on your breastbone. I just did that and jumped out of my seat.

What an annoying injury.

Going surfing tomorrow. I wonder how painful this can get?

I've heard so many stories of injuries while mountain biking. I wonder if stats would show it is far more dangerous than rock climbing? Maybe not.

The worst part is when you feel a good sneeze coming on...

Jeeze Doood, have you tried just paddling yet, let alone the pop up? This can reeeaaaaly suck. Sometimes, you can actually get a little support from taping it.

If it's all time, and depending on how bad the break is, you may have to try.....personal call for sure.

edit; slow healing for sure. You will probably pay for your paddle out so make sure it's worth it.

I was just going to reply to the thread title...

'well, pick it up off the patio deck and put it back on the grill and add more BBQ sauce' sheesh!

Then I read on.

Going back to thinking about bbq. Too painful to think about surfing in that condition. woof!

You get axed by a 6 ft wave and you'll feel it. You screw up dropping in and land with your ribs hitting the board turned up on its side, you'll feel it. Your hand slips off the rail when you are popping up and you smack against the board, you'll feel it.

Buy hey man, YOLO. Carpe diem and all that!

Have you tried blowing that nice Schilke piccolo trumpet yet? When I broke ribs playing trumpet was out of the question. Lucky for me I wasn't doing it for a living any more...

Start healing, stop surfing. When normal daily activities cease to hurt, then you can try surfing, carefully! Oh screw the surfing, just go back to climbing, it's probably safer!

I've got a long history of this. Four Advils every 6 hours the first couple of days, then start dropping the dosage down.

Masking the pain with Advil may lead to premature activity that will exacerbate the injury. Pain is good!

I wouldn't try surfing with a broken rib. You could drown. Not likely, but your chances have increased. Good luck.

I feel your pain Gunkie. I crashed my mountain bike in Moab last Wednesday and broke my top rib. Sneezing and coughing are the worst.

I've broken ribs twice in separate mountain biking crashes. Basically going way too fast - but that's what makes the DH fun, no?. Once when on a steep DH on a brand new bike with wider handlebars than my previous bike, clipped a tree with the end of the bar, crushed my pinky finger, went flying, landed in a heap, broke a couple of ribs and the pinky.

Second time was making a transition from steep DH to slight uphill with a slight turn and burped the front tire (likely slow leak, hadn't recharged the Stans in the tubeless), thrown down hard onto hardpan, broke one rib.

Recovery: about 6 weeks each time. I avoided upper body movement- no climbing or lifting for 4 weeks. Biking was no problem, just no standing up on the pedals or technical terrain for the first 3 weeks.

Whatever you do, do not catch a cold. Coughing or sneezing in the first week will not be fun. I imagine swimming would be a bad idea since you have to use your upper body quite a bit.

Good luck, and get back on that bike!

Yeah, you're probably not going surfing tomorrow. I'm guessing it's going to get worse for a few days. Just a hunch.

Here's the deal: If you can spend the day surfing tomorrow, you didn't break any ribs today.

I think the stats show more injuries per hour of participation, but fewer fatalities.

And my (thankfully not extensive) experience of broken ribs says that surfing is unwise. Better to take it easy for a while so as not to prolong the recovery time.

If you're considering surfing the following day, you most definitely did NOT break a rib. It takes a lot of effort to break a rib, and the resulting pain is truly exquisite.

You folks have obviously been through this. YES, it's hurting more a few days in. Tried to lay down on a board on the floor last night and there is NO WAY I'm going surfing until NJ gets to the 5mm steamer wetsuit level this winter. And you are all right, coughing is really bad and anticipating the sneezes coming up is terrible.

This blows. But I truly appreciate the input.
