I am sure at at one point or another you have asked yourself why you climb. Most non-climbers probably tell you it is because you are crazy, have a death wish, or are a thrill-seeker.
I am also interested in the answer but do not find the non-climbers opinions satisfactory. After talking to climbers, watching documentaries and interviews, reading forum posts, books and articles, I came up with a list of reasons climbers give or allude to. I am not sure how widely these apply, so I put them into a 10 item survey in hopes of getting some answers from people on this forum. Please take the survey and I will post the summary here. Here is the link:

If you do take the survey, please reply here to keep this post at the top
Thanks!

You'd probably get a lot of "for the adventure" type answers if you asked climbers on other forums, but Supertopo is not like other forums.
Here you will only find the cream, the absolute top climbers in the world, and I think I can speak for all of us and say that we wouldn't bother with such a pointless (and dangerous) activity if it weren't for the vast sums of money our sponsors throw at us.

I think when you really like doing something, you don't ask this question, you simply know you have to do it because it is a part of what life is, for you. Many do ask this question however...someone will take the survey.

Ya that survey could really use some choices that have to do with fun, nature, adrenaline, exploring, the views, smiles, exercise, getting scabs, pooping your pants, the challenge etc... Positive things.
Most of those options just have to do with escaping negative, depressing things. Probably true for some people.
Climbing is fun and you get to go to cool places (true)

Can't help it..
Is this a joke survey?
It's The most biased, straw-manned survey Ever. None of those questions have Any bearing on why I climb. "Not applicable" is only available as a choice on the last question, but is the correct answer for pretty much all of the questions.
This is a survey whose questions support a particular hypothesis, no matter what, the answers.
Check it out

I think it is an insurance industry generated thing.
For me to lecture anyone on
Thinking before you answer random questions from strangers . Well I know it is a
Howler but. . .
Do not respond to these sorts of things they are meant to be used to deny climbers their rights to ?; health care, custody and jobs - as well as the catch 22 ;
of having to admit to climbing, on official forms when It is no ones business .
Paranoid, gnome, but why what will the data be used for?

I climb 'cause it feels so good when the torture stops
When I drop the 80-pound pack off my shoulders
And when I unclip that damn sled from my harness
When I'm no longer post-holing up to my nuts
When big rocks are no longer flying over my head
Feels so good when all of that stops
