Angela and I had a wonderful day in Pamukkale, Turkey. The site of the calcite formed Traventine Pools and the ancient ruins of Hierapolis.
Off to Olympos tomorrow for a final five days of climbing on impeccable limestone and sea kayaking on the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea.
Full TR to follow on Armenia, Georgia and Turkey.

Hey Jim, there are still some badass way ancient ruins in Syria, just to your south, that ISIS has yet to destroy....

EDIT: Glad I got to see em long long long ago....

I've seen pics of these calcite deposits before; in the geologic world they are somewhat famous. The geologist in me is very jealous that you get to see them in person. I take it the ruins are associated with the deposits.

Wow, that is beautiful. I've never heard of or seen anything like that! Being in LA, I'd even settle for just some interesting clouds like those. Look forward to full TR.

If the pictures you posted above are just a teaser, I can't wait for the full trip report. Thanks, Jim.

Better look out Jody, Jim is sneaking up on you with fantastic images! I love the one where Jim is walking barefoot on that clean and impeccable limestone! Better than walking on Oregon beaches, I bet! I'd settle for solid limestone under my feet than sand between my toes! TFPU! And yes, I too am ready for a full TR!

Olympos is one of my favorite places. Nothing like walking THROUGH 2 millenia-old ruins to get to this:
