I may "get" to go to SLO for a week, I'm planning on bringing my mountain bike and climbing gear. Any beta??? Anyone willing to go climb in the evening?
I'll likely be trying to sleep in my truck for a night or 2 if I go over before i get a hotel paid for, anywhere good for that?

When is the best time to surf? Early morning or evenings? In Oregon the waves almost always suck after 9 am.

Check out this recent NY Times video piece on SLO:

For mt. biking there's Montana de Oro, which is a great little park. I think you can camp there too. Lots more stuff around there I'm sure that I don't know of. Probably any number of bike shops in the area can point you in the right direction. Bishop Peak for climbing. Have fun. It's a great little area.

I never biked at Montana de Oro but I've camped there a few times at a State campground. There are some great trails in the hills and also along the numerous and beautiful headlands near the sea.

Bike to Morro Rock, look for sea otters in the bay just as you reach the edge of the bay-- there's a local bunch often visible from the bike path without binoculars
Check out local surfers on the E side of Morro Rock
Check out "Peregrine Bob", the Pacific Coast Peregrine Watch guy. Daily, on the W side of Morro Rock, the guy with spotting scopes and director's chairs set up to see the falcons.
Then bike south to Los Osos, have a meal at Noi's Thai place, closed weekends! or the new seafood place owned by the same owner.
Bike along the coast toward Los Osos/toward Montana de Oro. Great Marine Center at the state park, amazing window/deck with view of the bay.
Audubon Sweet Springs Preserve in Los Osos - amazing views of the bay

Those are some fun ideas for a 60 year old. I was looking into skate parks and dirt jumps before I found out that I won't be going.
I would love to see some ocean otters, the few times I've seen river otters in the crooked river I've been super stoked.
I'll ask Hans if I'm worthy, I've climbed in a lot more historic areas just fine.

Ditto Scrubbing Bubbles. Got my first cheese grater there. Runout.
EDIT: The place has a terminal case of the "Cute"s. Taught there for about 6 years.

There are some great trails by Cuesta Grade, which is up the hill from CalPoly. Check out Shooters, Botanicals and the Eucs. Eucs is a flow trail area with bank and platform jumps. It's super fun. There's also Montana de Oro but it's a 30 min drive from town. Hazard Peak is a great loop but it's only 12.4 miles and 2k. You might have to do 2 laps for a workout. I haven't done anything else there.
I've climbed a lot on Bishops Peak in college. There are 2 primary walls, Cracked and P-Wall. Cracked wall has single pitch routes from 5.8 - 12. They tend to be mixed, one or two pieces and bolts. There are a few routes worth doing. Camel, Lama and Western Airlines are the classics on Cracked. On P-Wall, P-Crack is the one to do.

Montana de Oro has a nice campground. And if all the spaces are taken it has a single night overflow lot for those passing through.

I grew up in Cayucos, spent many a sunset evening at The Pier or Studio Drive until it was too dark to see. After seeing tide pools in other places, I realize how great they are (or at least were 30 years ago) north of the pier.
Walking out on the rock jetty in Morro Bay is a fun scramble for a different perspective on the rock. Renting canoes near the marina area south of the Embarcadero is fun. Walking along the cliffs and tidepools of Montana de Oro State Park is also beautiful.
Then there's all that climbing stuff too.

skitch,
Too bad your trip may not be happening. I have fun memories like Nut describes. My sister used to live in Los Osos (between the coast and SLO) and I'd take my niece and nephew to Montana de Oro to check out the beach and caves. Beautiful area.

If you go to Bishops peak, there used to be a plastic binder/topo with all the climbs in a tree near the base of Western Airline (cracked wall).

Great riding around there. You can do a big loop and stop at Cuesta where there is a very fun boulder to play on.
