Just curious,
Why would someone use a screen name rather than their real name? For me, it is kinda hard to take someone serious if I don't know who is doing the talking. When someone says something to someone using a screen name it's like talking behind their back. Maybe if we all used our real names, you know like talking face to face, we would be a little more thoughtful before we opened our mouths. Would a page with all the screen names matched up with the real names be a good thing. Voluntary of course. Then we would at least know who we were talking to.

i agree! however its not that easy to change to your real name one you have the screen name. i emailed chris mac to change mine last month, but havnt heard back. so i went to the comment section for supertopo and left a comment that i would like to change to my name. perhaps a computer wise person could give me the beta, but i think i need to have a different email address to change this.

Some of our "screen names" predate screen names.

Agree that it has been talked about before but it's a great topic.

Would I say the same things if my name was on them? Yes.

Could someone fine my real name based on the information I've posted here? Yes

How about just adding your real name in the details section so instead of saying where you are from it's your real name?

I have recently, within the last year or two, petitioned cMac (man I wish he would use his real name) to change my screen name to Clark Gable and if that is taken, then to Clark Bar

In the meantime, to satisfy Roger Breedlove's request, going forward everyone should always print his/her non-screen name at the bottom of each post.

It's me, k-man. But you can call me Kelly (as if I don't already have enough weirdos following me around...).

my screen name contains my real name, an old nickname and and a hint of who I really am. My last name is irrelevant, it is way common and not what I was born too.

Plus, what lolli said.

ditto. too many weirdos and doing a google search of your own name can provide frightening results.

I tried to do it with my real name twice. Cmac even tried to help, but it was screwed up. In fact, I can't even use my real email. I figured it was just meant to be that way for a reason and went with it. Many of my buddies know me as Couchmaster since I got taggged with that moniker over 30 years back. It's not a secret. Sorry, but I post as "billcoe" on Cascadeclimbers and Mountain Project as penance.

on the bright side, anytime anyone gets pissed at me and sends a nastygram to billcoe@mail.com, I don't see it for 4 to 6 months. LOL

Precedent has been set. If you want to be taken seriously around here you sign your name to your post when it matters. Otherwise you just get treated like a troll.
