You have to see this.

The first couple minutes show a POV self arrest that will shiver your timbers. The rest of it is almost as compelling.

If you replay the part about :40-50 in the video, you can see that he starts to slide, reacts fast, and has one chance to make a quick swing with the leashless piolet. If he waits one second more, the acceleration would be too great and the ax likely gets yanked from his hand. Love the quote :

" I am on blue f__ing ice. I was close to go down"

Snowboarder son and I just watched. Whoa! Amazing! Pushing the limits.

We have an incredible playground on this planet. Some swing on the swing set and others go over the top in a full 360. This guys a 360 man. Cheers for life and living it. lynne

the same rider was featured in a film at the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival last night. And then there were the other 8 films featured. AWESOME event. Go next December if you get a chance. Sold out packed house.

So what happens in the end? They don't bother to show if he rides the ice or gets a rescue.

If he rode it we'd see the footage, so he went back up. Wide angle shot distortion; his axe was probably within reach once he got crampons back on.

Still, he nearly bought it right there.

When I first say the thread title, I thought cutting turns on water ice. Lots more reasonable to be shooting it straight down. Still... hat's f*cking off to that riding!

Coming from skiing 45-degree stuff on skinny skis with leather boots (with Carter!) to today's big-platform boards driven by plastic (skis that really didn't appear until after the influence of snowboards kicked in to their design), you start to get a glimmer of reasonableness to riding like that.

The snowboard is an awesome tool that gives huge leverage, and forgiveness, to balance.
