I'm catching a flight from the Shawangunks, which has been a veritable jungle the past two weeks, to Seattle tomorrow. Friend from Leavenworth is picking me up and we're heading out. The problem is - weather. Looks bad. Any ideas for decent hikes in the area? Other places that are reasonable distances away with tendencies towards better weather?

For climbing, head east. Vantage, out on the Columbia River, will get more of the rain shadow.

If it looks long term, maybe look at the weather up in Skaha. Awesome place as well.

It never rains in Vantage or at least that was Daves mantra back when I went to U of I.

What the hell do you suppose they invented bars for?

20-30% chance of precip in 11worth usually means climbing will still be fine.

Personally, I can't recommend Peshastin, or really Vantage.

You could do like we did to make Peshastin more interesting - put on
your mountain boots.

Vantage is not the prettiest place in some ways but the flowers are blooming and there will be fewer crowds during the week. There are many routes worth doing there (bolted face/arete climbs and also some fun crack/stemming routes). Five day forecast is for little/no rain and highs in low 70s.

Vantage is usually a safe bet. Even if it calls for rain, it'll rain for 20 min, then be dry. I hear Pesashtin is usually dry, but that bar > sketchy sandstone

The hiking, mountaineering, and skiing are awesome around Leavenworth. Between Leavenworth and Wenatchee, there is plenty to do.

I don't recommend Vantage. Maybe I'm in the minority, but the climbing was not worth the drive. There isn't a lot around it.

A better alternative than Vantage is Tieton. Okay, just about anything is better than Vantage, but Tieton is a lot better. Another option, assuming your passport is in order, is Skaha.

But like Reilly said, they do have bars in Leavenworth.

Never made it to Skaha or Tieton, wish I had. I did have a ton of fun at Vantage. I thought a bunch of those crack lines were great.

Tieton is better than Vantage.

I'd still climb a peak if the rock is wet.

Best bet is go straight east about 1 1/2 hour from Leavenworth to Banks Lake and granite climbing in the Sun Lakes area. Unless you just love the basalt....

If you are willing to drive a little, there is Bend, OR and Squamish.

The climbing gym is always dry.

Forecast in Skaha valley was rain and thunderstorms the last 4 days straight. I was outside the whole time, backpacking in the mountains above, it rained maybe 1 hr a day. More sun than rain. I wouldn't worry about the weather!

PeChosstin Pinnacles and Vantage are crap. Tieton is much better--nicer camping, way better climbing, and way less hoodlums.

Thanks for the responses, please keep 'em coming. Any peaks to recommend in current snow/rain conditions? I was a backpacker before I was a climber, so I really like hiking.
