Montana/Wyoming climber Jim Kansler took his life last night in Jackson Hole, Wy. Jim climbed with Jack Tackle, Kim Schmitz and me in China in 1980. He was a pioneering climber in Montana and also an accomplished skier. He will be missed.

Very sorry to hear that Jim. Got any good pictures of him?
RIP brother.

Did he leave much family?

It's a hard road out there in life. Just keep being there for each other as much as we can.

Sad news. I knew and worked with Jim. I used his guidance for some of my best youthful back country adventures. He always had a smile for me and always love to hear him say 'If you can see it, ski it!'. RIP Jim.

Always a great sadness to lose one of our small tribe.

Especially, since I never got to meet him.

Anyone know if he posted on ST?

Wishing Jim the best on an epic journey and my heart goes out to those left behind.

This sort of thing is never anybody's "fault" particularly friends and family (and they often question that, so I write it here, nobody is in our control)

Peace

I have made a few trips over to Montana over the last several years. Always trying to do classic routes and you continually read about this hard core crew that was putting up routes and his name seemed to come up a lot. So sorry to hear about this.

May GOD give you peace and comfort all who knew and loved Jim, especially his family. It always hurts when those we know leave us. I know that pain all too well. Until you see Jim again one day. Prayers and GOD's peace.

A cold and snowy night in Bozeman!

My God, I hate that my first post on ST has to be in this thread. I knew Jim, aka Rat Hole (maybe Jaimie will illuminate that story) for nearly forty years. He was about the most personally generous guy I've ever known. Never a dis or a slight for anyone.
Skied with him some, climbed with him some, partied with him some more. In the last twentyfive years I've only seen him five or six times. But always knew he'd be a friend when there.
At 5:00 this afternoon, I was trying to plan a trip to Driggs to visit other pals, and thinking it would be great to hang with JK/RH for a bit while in the neiborhood.

Now it's cryin' time again.
