Bicycle vs. Car on the way home from work yesterday left me with two breaks in my left clavicle, some strained shoulder tendons/ligaments (but not separated or dislocated), a few stiches, and a bit of road rash.

With a helmet and relatively slow speed (only ~10mph, I'm guessing) I got off easy. The EMTs were impressed with the damage I did to the car, but dang hittin' metal-n-glass hurts. Lying in the road, I remember thinking "that really ouched."

I have an appointment to see the orthopedist in a couple days...in the ER he mentioned phys therapy, but before my visit I'm hoping to get feedback from folks who've experienced similar injuries. Any advice??

[I'll be watching for comments but typing with one hand (and being hopped up on meds) will limit my thank you's and replies = some thanks up front.]

DAMN!

So I guess this means you don't want to get out with the kids again this month. Maxine will be seriously bummed.

Sorry, no advice. Clavicles are among the few things I haven't messed up. But if you need any heavy lifting done while you're convalescing be sure to give me a shout.

damn, damn, damn.

BTW, glad you're not typing from the "other side".

Tyler Hamilton rode the Tour de France with a broken clavicle, didn't he?
Oh wait,... and some juice!

This injury is going to take some time. I broke mine, but was only 5 at the time, so I can't remember how long. I've climbed a week after a shoulder dislocation, but I don't think you will be able to pull down for quite some time.

Hope your recovery is swift! If not get on some slabs.

I broke my right clavicle in a bike accident a while back. Painful for a bit, but it healed rapidly and I was back riding and climbing after a relatively short layoff. Don't remember the exact length of time off, but it didn't seem like too long.

And the clavicle was not the only damage, as I also managed to put half a dozen big cracks in the scapula on that side. My doc later told me the radiologist was running around the hospital the next day shouting "Look at this, look at this! I've never seen anything like this before!" Apparently it's not easy to break a scapula, as it floats around so much. What the radiologist told me was that the only way he could imagine that fracture happening was if some big guy got behind me and laid into my back with a baseball bat.

You've got two breaks, so maybe it'll take longer, but clavicles do heal well, so take it easy for a bit, and you'll be back on the rock before too long.

I don't know about the sympathy, dude. Warren Harding would have just gone out and done some heinous wall FA right away to celebrate that he wasn't dead. Doug Scott dragged his ass down from, what, the Ogre or whatever it was with 2 broken legs... Man up! and figure you should be good to go on some R or X routes.

Actually, the real opportunity is for a whole series of "FO-AAs" (First one-arm ascents).

I've escaped thus far, but so many of my friends have broken legs, arms, fingers and collar bones from riding bikes. Climbing is scarier, but less hazardous.

I feel for you cowpoke. That sucks royally.

The best advice I have is to sign up for Netflix. The instant viewing is a life saver when you are forced on the couch. No joke. I recommend the first five seasons of the Office. Hilarious! I watched them all in four days.

Guess we'll be seeing more of you here too!

I'll thinking of you tomorrow, as I lay down on the operating room table for my Titanium rod removal surgery.

Consider yourself lucky mate.

Sucks!!!

So you basically have zero arm strength to use, but your fingers and feet are okay . . .
