My favorite story along these lines was why they changed the name to Texas Christian University.
You see originally it was Christian University of Northern Texas, but the coeds refused to wear the sweatshirts,....
(think about it)
Any route names that could have been better thought out?

The polar explorer Vivian Fuchs, whose family name was pronounced as though spelt with a "k", not an "h". A friend told me a few years ago they gave away shirts at the U of O to honor the mile run. They said the THE LAST GOOD MILE and repeated down the shirt while fading out. The last line then read THE LAST GOOD MILF.

There was a famous incident on Hockey Night in Canada - a national icon here - where the cameras zoomed in on a sign held by a fan. Some time ago. Anyway, it said something like "ABC, we love you, FOAD" - ABC being one of the 'colour' commentators. One of those fatuous buffoons who ends up in sportscasting, with an annoying personality. Anyway, as the cameras showed the sign, ABC was all over himself that his beloved fans were recognizing him.
He didn't have a clue what FOAD stood for.

There was a local surgeon with a specialty in hands called Dr. Groper.
Tami, what you don't know is that I grew up with him. Actually knew his sister a lot better than I knew him, and also knew his father fairly well -- his father being my dentist when I was a kid.
Anyway, Peter and I moved to Vancouver at around the same time, although I'd already long since lost touch with him and all of his family. And then, in one of those weird twists of fate, it turned out that the surgeon who repaired my hands a couple of decades later had been trained by him.
Edit: Regarding Anders' mention of the Antarctic explorer Vivian Fuchs (actually Sir Vivian). He was generally known to his friends as "Bunny." He was actually pretty hard. Made the first crossing of Antarctica with Ed Hillary. But still... Bunny Fuchs?
